Nice lens for my Nex-5

Dec 22, 2010

I needed a faster lens for my Nex-5 that also supports autofocus. I hesitated a little bit because I read that autofocus might be slow. However, I intended to use it for the indoor interviews for my documentary films. In the interview situation I can afford 5 secs. However to my surprise, the autofocus is much faster (about 1-2 secs in my case). This has been the best choice of faster autofocus lens for Nex-5. Note that to use this lens on Nex-5 one needs Sony LA-E1 adapter.

Well worth it.

Jan 4, 2011

I have been using my Alpha 100 for years now with the kit lens and a 75-300 that I bought soon after the camera and they have met my needs overall. The addition of this lens has allowed me to go farther with portrait and low light shots that I could not achieve easily before. Even though this is not one of the high priced elite lenses, it more than meets my needs with Sony's entry level DSLR that I have no intention of replacing unless it dies. Great product.

Good, basic 50mm Lens

Jan 16, 2012

I use this lens for indoor family portrait type shooting. The bokeh I can get makes for more effective shots, and it performs better in low-light than my previous lenses (lower end Tamron and Sony kit lens), which for someone who shoots principally handheld is a plus. A good, basic lens. Those with a bigger budget and a keener interest might do well with something higher-end, as build quality doesn't feel like it would stand up to heavy, aggressive use.

Great lens for low light portraits

Oct 5, 2010

Quite fast lens - I love the way it handles indoors when there is not a good light source for getting captures of activity - great for any beginner who is looking for portrait lenses that don't cost an arm and a leg. Con is that it is very loud - not good for taking photos of animals that you're trying to approach unless you use the manual focus - the alpha camera has in body focus capabilities so you can pull it off that way.

Sharpest lens in my bag!

Dec 22, 2010

All of my pictures turn out wonderfully the first time. Has practically removed any need to photoshop. The colour is great, the lighting is beautiful and focus is sharp. I can't say enough about it! I've already used it to take a million shots of my baby niece... and used it as an alternative for a wedding shoot. The bride and groom were incredibly impressed with the proofs from this lens in particular.

A nifty-fifty!

Dec 26, 2016

Good 50mm lens for portraits and low light on a Sony A-57 (APSC sensor). Obviously doesn't have the sharpness and background bokeh of a Sigma Art lens, but it's also nowhere near the price, either. Only downside I've found so far is that it doesn't come with a lens hood. Actually, it doesn't even have the bayonet for a lens hood - you have to buy a third-party hood that screws into the filter thread.

Best deal in town...ever.

Apr 20, 2017

This lens is a steal. They sacrificed some build quality by reducing some metal, but MORE than made up for it with the optics. This lens is tack sharp. I did a bit of research over at DXO, and for my SonyA77II, only a Zeiss lens beat it for sharpness...by a hair... a hair. The Zeiss lens would run you 1500 bucks. Need I say more? You won't ever get a sharper lens for the money...ever.

My new favorite lens

Mar 6, 2015

I just had a baby boy in December and was taking a lot of photos using my Sigma 50mm macro lens, but he moved so fast, it was hard to get a clear shot. I found this one and it hasn't come off my camera since it was delivered. It is great for portriats. I can't wait until the weather gets nicer and we can use it outside. The price is great for the quality of the pictures you will get.

A must have considering the price

Oct 19, 2010

This lens is very nice considering its cost. The body is plastic but does not feel flimsy for such a lightweight lens, however it does shake a little. The photos are very nice, with a very interesting Bokeh. I did not give it 5 stars because in my opinion 50mm is a bit too long for comfortable everyday use on an APS-C camera such as my Alpha 200 though it works great for portraits.

Excellent lens!

Aug 12, 2010

I purchased this in a rush for my A550 to use at my daughter's christening and man am I glad I did! This was an excellent lens for indoor use. Colors were reproduced accurately and the focus was quick. Images are a little soft at 1.8 but. Bumping it up a little fixed that right up. This is definitely one of my favorite lenses and it should be in eberyones gear bag without a doubt.

Awesome Lens for an Awesome Price!

Mar 13, 2011

I have had this lens for about a month now and am very impressed with the quality of photos it produces. This lens is perfect for low light and portrait photos. The casing is plastic but that really doesn't bother me (it actually seems to be very rugged because when my order arrived my lens box was completely smashed but the lens was okay). I would purchase this lens again.

Having Great Results With Lens

Feb 1, 2010

I bought this lens for use in concert photography and to avoid using the flash in order to get a more natural feel to my photographs. Thus far the lens has produced very sharp images in lowlight conditions and i have been very pleased. Didnt give it a 5 star rating because it does have a plastic mount but i dont foresee that being a problem. I would recommend this lens.

just what i needed

i use it for local photo outings.sharp clear pictures, good bokeh.light weight and easy to attach, however, with an a/f switch on both the camera and the lens the camera didn't know what to do.i turned both switches off and went to manual, worked for me.wish the focus ring was thicker and had a rubber surface. wish you had one in 135mmf2.8 at a good price.

New Favorite Lens!

Jul 8, 2014

This lens is awesome. I use it for pretty much everything now. It's fast, sharp and smooth. I'm not huge on the filters being 49 mm since most of the ones I have are 55 mm but it's no biggie. I was a little weary at first seeing how it was on the lower spectrum for prices, but I don't regret the purchase one bit! It does everything it says and more!

a really nice lens BUT!!!

Jan 16, 2011

takes me back to my younger days when i made do with one lens.sharp clear pictures. HOWEVER-with af switchs on both the lens and camera my a-550 will go in and out of focus as long as i hold down the release, and never release the shutter. i turn off both switch's and go to manual,i get better pictures and feel right at home.still love this lens.

This is a great lens at a great price

Aug 7, 2009

Bought this lens for doing weddings in the low light and it has worked great. All the other lens's like this run $300 or more and for the price this is a steal. I would recommend this lens to anyone using a Sony Alpha that needs to take pictures in low light... Have not found anything yet that I don't like, Sony did a great job with this one.

Great color and sharper images!

Sep 16, 2014

I purchased this as my 2nd lens and it is wonderful! The picture quality is much more vivid and the f/1.8 allows my images to Pop! Usage is mainly for portraits and outdoor shots. It's a really good addition to your arsenal especially for the price. I gave it 4 stars only because of the plastic build. But other than that, this is a must have!

Great lens, low cost!

Jan 28, 2010

I thought I would use this lens only for portraits. Wrong! I use it for any shot requiring either low light performance or sharp images. I have used it both indoors and out. Since Sony DSLRs have steadyshot, the large aperture of this lens adds up to a great low light performer. I rarely use my flash anymore. And the price! Can't go wrong!

A Bright Lens

Dec 26, 2010

I've only had this lens about 2 weeks/300 shots. I'm hoping this will be a light weight, low-light walking around lens & so far it's doing very well. I'm using it with my Sony a55. From window-light to 6AM snow light I'm getting low-noise sharp pictures that post-process very well. The bokeh is just how I like it--smooth & dreamy.

Great little lens

Dec 19, 2010

I'm in no way a professional and have nothing to compare this lens to but I am more than happy with this lens. It's great for close up product shots and portraits. The lens construction does seem pretty weak but for the price it's really not that bad and once on the camera you don't really notice. Very happy I purchased it.

Great Lens

Jan 18, 2015

I use this for photos and video. It has very smooth auto-focus and is generally pretty quiet. The photos are very sharp and look great. It is a great quality lens. The only thing I found wrong with it was that the mounting ring on the lens is not completely metal. That is a very small issue with an overall great lens.

I use this lense mostly for inside portraits and snapshots of my kid. I'm not a pro, but this lense makes me look good. It takes crystal clear picts in low light situations. The only downside is that you actually have to move yourslf around because it's a fixed focal length, but I knew that when I bought it!
