An Amazing Engineering Achievement with One Fatal Flaw

Dec 10, 2015

Sony had fixed the most glaring issues plaguing the first RX1R--terrible AF performance and no built-in EVF--and done so in a meaningful way. AF is now quite useful and fast in most situations and the EVF is designed to pop-up in a significantly more robust fashion than in the RX100IV, although the design of the removable round rubber eye-cover is an option to be forgotten by most users as it is a challenge to mount and you can't close the EVF wi... Nearly the camera of my dreams.

Dec 8, 2015

I do a great deal of street, public event and travel photography. My kit has long consisted of two full-frame bodies, one with a 35mm lens on it all the time. I use that for about 80% of what I shoot. And the other that more often than not has either an 85 or 135mm lens on it - occasionally a 20mm. So this camera all by itself replaces one of my SLRs and is far lighter and smaller. In reality, I can replace more than that. The lens is so sharp an... Show More

I Love It!

Feb 4, 2016

I've been out of photography for many years. My last serious work was with a Hasselblad film camera for photographing wedding and fine art black and white printing. I've been checking out digital cameras for quite some time but haven't found one that really drew me back into photography until I ended up purchasing the RX1RII. I purchased an A7RII last year for my daughter and had a couple of weeks to work with it and test it before giving it to h... Show More

Compact Powerhouse!

Apr 27, 2016

First I'd like to say what a revolutionary camera this truly is. The RX1RII not only builds upon the mark I, it solidifies itself as a real contender with the likes of Leica rangefinders. Having a fixed 35mm F2 lens might deter some people, since the lens is not interchangeable, but 35mm is a wonderful focal length to work within. I find myself consistently pleased with the results in various situations. This little camera packs astounding 42MP r... Show More

The RX1 Concept Made (Infinitely) More Usable

Dec 22, 2015

The original RX1 was not fun to use. Yes, the camera was something of a ground-breaker. Its Zeiss lens was wonderful and the full-frame sensor was top-notch for its day. But the AF was slow and unpredictable, the rear screen did not tilt, and if you wanted a viewfinder you had to buy an expensive shoe-mounted EVF that made the camera far less convenient. (I used gaffers tape to secure the EVF, since it had a tendency to become dislodged easily.) ... Show More

Excellent Camera

May 30, 2016

When my wife and I decided to join another couple for a walking tour of northern Sicily this fall I was faced with a dilemma. I have a Nikon D810 with lots of glass. Excellent camera, but it is big and heavy. This trip is not a tour to engage my compulsion for taking photographs of every bird, person, flower, insect and building. Instead it is a time to enjoy the company of friends, enjoy the landscape and the food and take some photos. I also di... Show More

Exceeds parallels with high-end professional cameras

Nov 6, 2016

While digital technologies continue to be perfected with professional camera use and their widespread applications, the latest Sony RX1RII fixed Zeiss lens camera (other cameras allow long-lens variants) exceeds expectations, especially when printing work on a large scale (with the Epson Stylus Pro 9900). While some relatively minor imperfections exist as with all cameras that professionals adjust to, the expansive quality of color, remarkable lo... Show More

Superb image quality

Dec 8, 2015

This an excellent camera for THE premier 35mm focal length shooting experience. I'm a long time Leica M shooter and hate big cameras. The RX1R II is what I've been waiting for the past several years and is now my main digital body for color use, which accompanies my Leica M3 and two prime lenses for analog monochrome use. What's to like? The RX1R II is very small and light (smaller than the Leica M series; it's more comparable to the Leica IIIf i... Show More

When you thought things couldn't have gotten better...

Dec 9, 2015

I've owned both the Sony RX1 and the RX1r. Each were designed for specific shooting scenarios and had their own strengths and weaknesses. The Sony RX1rii allows you to have both models in one with improvements in focusing, dynamic range, color capture, etc. I find this model focuses faster than the earlier versions, produces better images, and even better video. I find myself rarely reaching for my full frame DSLR and keep this camera nearby. The... Show More

Dec 4, 2016

I have had this camera for about a week now. I have really only had time to use it at night. I was really excited nonetheless to get out and shoot with this crazy little camera. The sharpness and detail rival my A7Rii but is even smaller. The screen is fantastic and the viewfinder feels super solid when opening and closing it. Focusing on it is very fast and accurate I only had one little hiccup with it back focusing on me in some odd lighting. T... Show More

A LITTLE GEM

Jul 25, 2016

I'm an artist, a photographer. I been using a canon 5d mark ii for the past 7 years, with canon prime lenses. But I wanted to have a pro camera in a small size which I can take with me everywhere, with out carrying so much weight. I read many reviews as I could find, and I finally decided to buy it. All the week I've been shooting most of the time in RAW, and I am absolutely so happy for my decision. The quality of the images are GREAT. Super sha... Show More

AMAIZING CAMERA WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Dec 8, 2015

I normally shoot with a Canon 1DX, great camera. On our last european vacation I found myself lugging around way too many lenses, accessories and not to mention all that weight. All I used was my 28-35 2.8 mostly. All shots were set at 35mm and only once I pulled out the 70-200 2.8 Found this baby and now have been shooting with it for one week and yes I am going to sell my Canon 1DX The 35mm lens is just superb and the finished product is amazin... Do This First And You Will Have No Complaints Later

Dec 10, 2015

1. Put the camera in Airplane Mode. The default setting has the WiFi turned on. Turn that off and your battery life improves dramatically. 2. Set the custom buttons to toggle between the lcd screen and the viewfinder, otherwise you'll have to dig into the menus to change these settings. Better yet, set a custom button to deactivate the lcd altogether. That way the screen doesn't eat up battery power when you're just walking around. 3. Turn off Pr... Show More

Impressive performance marred by terrible design flaws

Jul 30, 2017

The RX1R II is perhaps bet in class in terms of image quality, and has an excellent AF system as well. But it suffers greatly from Sony's institutional weakness in designing controls and software user interfaces. Aside from its pathetic battery life, this camera's convoluted and disorganized menus are infuriating to use, and Sony can't even be bothered to add a favorites tab where the user can store his most used settings. The images from this camera are some of the best image quality that I have ever seen in any camera. The battery life isn't the greatest but it forces you to be more selective about the shots you take. Camera functions are a breeze because you can customize pretty much all the buttons on the camera which makes the camera very easy to use. It's relatively more expensive compared to other point and shoot cameras but it is totally worth every penny i... Show More

I've been a photographer for nearly 60 years (yes, I started way early ;)). If may be early to say, as I've only had the camera for a couple of weeks, but this is the best of the bunch... and I've had quite a few! The size makes is easy to handle and carry around, and makes it far less intimidating for subjects - especially important for a street photographer like myself. Eye focus that tracks the subject? Amazing camera, but bad copies exist

Dec 11, 2015

Having owned the original RX1, I was anxious for this successor's release. I pre-ordered mine within the first minutes of its pre-orderable status, and received it as soon as it was released. I was very saddened to have received a copy with a terribly calibrated lens: real-world results and stringently-controlled tests proved that the lens was decentered, producing very soft images on the left side of the frame. I've only had this little camera a few days, and its very impressive in the first few days of ownership! The images are nice and sharp, the focus speed is superfast! Also nice in low light. The battery use is bad, they drain too fast! This is a feature rich camera, in a well engineered package from Sony. I bought the cheaper lens shade, its fine.
