A compact alternative to the kit lens.

Apr 27, 2015

The Oly kit lenses drive me crazy. Twist to extend is OK, but the need to use two hands and release the lock to collapse is really annoying. They should learn from the Panny 12-32 kit lens for the GM cameras. (9-18 is the same, but I put up with it for the size/weight.) This EZ lens has powered extension/collapse AND is much smaller than the kit lenses when collapsed. With the optional auto lens cap, use is really convenient; turn on and it's rea... Show More

Brillant design!

Jul 26, 2014

One must understand the purpose of this lens. It is designed to transform a PEN or OM-D camera into a point and shoot. Combined with the additional auto lens cap, the lens powers from the closed compact state to the extended ready state with the auto lens cap opening for quick shooting when the camera is powered on. In other words, you now have a point and shoot with with supurb image quality. The zoom is powered as well just like a point and sho... Show More

Excellent size and quality of photos

Jun 18, 2014

This has become my default lens that is always left on the E-P5 paired with the auto lens cap. It is an extremely small lens that allows me to carry the camera with lens attached in the smallest camera bag possible and snap photos quickly. My main subjects of photography are reptiles and amphibians and I need a zoom lens because depending on the species (venomous or non-venomous in particular) I will be different distances away. Coolest. Lens. Ever.

Nov 30, 2018

How do more people not know about this lens?! I searched youtube and found a couple short unboxings in other languages, but nothing other than that. In short, this, paired with the automatic lens cap (LC-37C), is by far the coolest lens Ive ever used. I have it fixed on my G85, which transforms it into a pocketable point-and-shoot camera. The lens cap opens and closes automatically when you power cycle the camera! With the lens (and auto-cap) m... Show More

Astonishingly sharp from a compact lens

Aug 17, 2017

I also have the Olympus 17mm f1.8 and the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 PRO lenses and took a set of images indoors in dull conditions and outdoors in sunny conditions. Amazingly in overlaying the images in Photoshop, I found it difficult to distinguish them. This lens doesnt resolve the red as well, (based on red leds on a clock) and the colours require a little tuning (reaching towards red a touch), but the result is brilliant. The lens was tested at F4, ... Show More

Great little lens, no qualifications needed

Aug 15, 2019

The people who are saying it is not sharp I think are making assumptions. I'm frankly blown away by how good this lens is, overall. I wish it had a mechanically-actuated zoom, but then it wouldn't collapse to be so compact, so I'll take it. The build quality is typical Olympus: that is to say excellent. It feels dense and solid in the hand. In general, I prefer a more rangey zoom as my walk-around lens. I went with the Panasonic 12-60 G Vario. ... Show More

Solid build - just better - less plastic

Jun 18, 2016

I purchased this lens to go on a Lumix GX 85 that I got shortly after the lens arrived. I have an earlier version of this on my sturdy Lumix GX 1. I own a number of Olympus lenses and I find them just better than other available lenses on the market. I very much appreciate the build quality that has more metal and plastic. The optics are excellent as you would expect from this line of Olympus lenses. While in wide mode it is a 28 mm equivalent ve... Show More

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ

Jul 29, 2015

This is a very good lens, versatile, compact and easy to use. I needed a lens that would turn my Olympus OM-D-EM10 into a more compact package, but still provide the quality of the 14-42mm it came with. Right away reducing the size of this lens caused me some pause. After it arrived, I mounted it immediately and began to use it. It seems Olympus does not take lightly the task of manufacturing a product that works.., and this one certainly does ju... Show More

Welcome Upgrade From Previous 14-42 for EM10

Dec 6, 2016

I sold my Olympus EM 10 and upgraded to the EM 10 Mark II and wanted a lens that was smaller and more efficient than the kit lens that came with the EM 10 that required constantly unlocking before it would be used. This new version of the 14-42 EZ lens is great in the way it narrows the profile of the EM 10 in a way that makes it much more easily pocketable. At the same time, the auto-open feature is a welcome change atnd quality of the produced ... Show More

Sounded better on paper

Dec 11, 2016

Bought this to use on a DJI Inspire One RAW. On paper this sounded amazing but in real life and I don't know if I can blame the lense for this. The picture is very shaky zoomed in, and anything but a sunny day picture quality is very soft, around sunset it almost looks blurry. My biggest issue with the lens is the slow focus, again may be in part cause my the DJI X5R camera. Because of that I will give it a star rating in the middle, since I am not unhappy with the lens but I am not happy with it either.

Excellent Compact Lens

Sep 23, 2017

I bought this lens for special situations like visiting museums, churches or small groups where a long lens is just out of place and too bulky. This small pancake lens that telephotos out is a perfect companion my Olympus 4/3 camera body. With the lens on, the camera has a very compact size, light in weight and only slightly larger than a point and camera --- but I have the ability to shoot in M,A,S,P, A or video modes. Great for traveling in big cities and taking in all the tourist sites.

Good things come in small packages

May 21, 2017

The size of this lens is deceiving. It does not look like much (but the styling is very retro-cool) yet the images it produces are sharp with good contrast. In combination with the Pen-F, I was able to get tack sharp images handheld all the way to 1/8 sec. So far, my shooting has been limited to a few days, but in a variety of conditions. I do miss my faster f/2.8 Canon lenses, but I don't miss the weight. Combined with the in camera IS, the slower lens does not appear to be a problem.

A good lens when traveling.

Oct 26, 2016

I purchased the M. Zuiko ED 14-42mm lens because I like using my Olympus OM-10 when traveling but want to make the camera/lens combination as small as possible because I often travel with carry-on luggage only. I found this lens to be ideal for this specific purpose. With the OM-10, I can use my favorite camera; with the Zuiko ED 14-42mm lens, I have combination of lens/camera that is relatively small. With one trip now under my belt, it has turned out to be a good choice.

Quality Issues

Dec 12, 2018

Just received the lens today and I have not been able to mount it on the body yet. I think Olympus have quality issues with their products. This lens outer ring seems rough on some spots. I am assuming that I received a new copy from B&H but it looks slightly used. This is my second bad experience with Olympus lens. I decided not accept it but this time I think that its not acceptable. Review is strictly for the cosmetic issue and not functionality.

Small but mighty

Nov 10, 2016

I have switched to MFT photography due to the size and weight constraints during traveling and going hiking. The smallish compact system lens (M.Zuiko ED 14-42mm) is deal for the Olympus PEN F camera and fitting neatly in tight bags and trekking gear. It works without flaw, fast focus, and barely noticeable on the camera. The image Quality and build quality are second to none and match my Zeiss gear (at a lower cost). It's not bad as a system lens.

My every day lens

Jun 24, 2016

This is my every day, always ready lens. It automatically compacts and opens. With reset set to off in the camera, it reopens at the focal length you last used. Reset on has it open at 14 mm. Add the automatic lens cap and the lens is protected when off and you do not need to remember to remove it for that spontaneous photo. It's profile is shorter than the 17 mm f/1.8 which was my everyday lens until this one.

I carry the camera more

Dec 15, 2015

It's not as nice as the 14-40 2.8 that I own, but it cuts down on the size and bulk of the camera substantially. I find myself taking the camera with me far more and doing more spontaneous shooting. When it matters and I know I will need to take a ton of pics I trade out for the better lens, especially in low light. It's not as sharp as my pro lenses, but for street photography is that really a bad thing?

Almost Invisible

Sep 8, 2015

Every Olympus lens I have in my bag weight at lest three times as much as this lens. It may not be a pancake but it's small enough to drop in any pocket as a backup to the larger zooms. The build quality seems to be on a par with the rest of the inventory and the resolution is more than acceptable. The zoom is electric, not my favorite but I suppose it works well with video.

Very compact pancake zoom lens

Sep 17, 2014

This is my new regular lens to use. Before I bought this lens, I had M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5 - 5.6 (discontinued lens.) Anyway I like this new lens, because it is thin, light weight compare to the old lens. As a zoom lens, it gives pretty good results. Of course, if you care about image quality, you should buy prime lens. It is great especially when I go traveling.

Good lens for most family / sightseeing photo-ops

Oct 31, 2016

Good lens for everyday family shots.Lens shipped and arrived promptly. Lens provides smooth zoom in/out features and minimal aberrations in the extreme settings. I am particularly happy with the camera (EPL-7) and lens low lighting conditions vs. regular point and shoot cameras. Compares well to my beloved and outdated 28mm-70mm lens on a 35 mm film SLR.

Very compact, decent quality

Jan 1, 2015

This lens is very convenient and compact, with a decent but not great image quality. The focus and zoom rings are small but comfortable. The autofocus is fast and (electronic) manual focus works reasonably well. Makes a very tiny package with the Olympus E-M10. Unfortunately, like all current pancake zooms, compactness must be traded for image quality.

ever cheap lens can do the job

I put the 14-42mm olympus kit lens on a used om-d m-5 for a walk about street lens. Before I even received the lens I figure I would send it back and get the fast 17mm f1.8 olympus lens, after using the 14-42mm I found it to produce fine photos, a compact simple $$. very usable lens. I might still get the 17mm 1.8f but will be keeping the 14-42mm

A very nice compact lens

May 11, 2014

When rating this lens, you have to compare it to the kit lens. IMO, it's at least comparable. Because of the size, I think that it's the better choice. It is very sharp, albeit somewhat slow, but the size makes it a great choice for travel photographers. I was actually somewhat amazed at the IQ, but it will definitely be in my bag when I travel.

Good lens, but not for me

Jul 21, 2015

Does everything it claims to do. But personally I found that I'd rather have a more manual focus option. Plus, testing on my Olympus OMD EM1, I got a much clearer picture from a non-pancake lens (not surprisingly). I returned this lens without regret after doing a side-by-side comparison in moderately low light with a Lumix G Vario 14-45mm.
