Good sound - sampling rate is overkill
This mic definitely improves sound pickup in the field. Im using it with the optional Fur Windjammer windscreen and it makes a tremendous difference in wind noise reduction. My only observation is that using24-bit/48kHz to record voice generates a much larger file than needed, but I guess Shure didnt want to have any complaints about sampling rate, so that should definitely satisfy everyone. And not having extra menu options (like sample size/rate) does make life simpler.

Perfect for Run and Gun
While I prefer how the Rode Video Mic Pro sounds, its drawback is relying on often sub-par camera mic pre-amps. Not so, with the LensHopper VP83F. Plus, its not tied to your camera, so you can close mic your subject with a boom. And if you're using it for run and gun attached to the cold shoe of your camera, you get the added bonus of having an in-camera back up recording via the mic out. I mostly use it for run and gun, but it has also saved my bacon more than once, when a subject's movements made the lav recording unusable.

Excellent shotgun mike for amateur usage
I got this microphone for a Sony AX-53 camcorder + Canon 5D MK3 and I'm very satisfied with it. I film mainly smaller concerts, interviews and documentaries. For interviews this microphone is a big help. Of course it's not the right mic for recording music, but whenever you need a directional microphone the Shure Lenshopper is a good choice in this price range. I got the one with flash recorder because the camcorder and camera input does not record in such a nice quality. I like this microphone and use it for portable recordings often together with a Zoom H5. Thumbs up!

Excellent acquisition!
I've received the product couple days ago and the first impression was the best it could be. First class build quality, very friendly operation menu. I've already used it to record some interviews in noisy environments and the sound was crystal clear. Everything has been doing well. I still haven't tested recording in windy conditions to check if the windjammer will really do its job. I only have a concern with the operation joystick because I fe... Show More

Great for multimedia reporters
I use this mic and recorder for DSLR video, but more often I use it for simultaneous audio reporting and still shooting. The option to record straight to the mic makes this possible. This is a really hot mic that reaches out and grabs your subject. It manages to not have total side to side rejection like larger shotguns. When reporting in the field I actually like this as it allows me to use the mic to record scene setting sounds when the gain is... Show More

Not the best shure product I own
I wish I would have purchased another mic like the rode. This one has very poor sound rejection from back and sides, and the audio quality is only decent. I do not advise this mic.

Great Mic for the field
I use it for outdoor live events and field interviews. It is not perfect, but after (2) clicks of sound adjustments it is just about perfect. The fact that the sound recorded on the internal memory card is so good is what is best. Keep the card slightly high and the camera slightly low. So there is no need to use an external digital recorder. What REALLY sucks is the location of the MicroSD card. OUCH!!! Why did they put it in an almost impossible position? There was plenty of room for SIDE placement.

Rugged, solid built Mic from a Brand Name
This is an awesome mic. It's rugged with all metal housing and is also lightweight. The plus side is having the micro SD card built in. That means you can both record in the mic and directly to your camera all at the same time. Sound quality is great but be sure to set mic gain in the camera for better audio.

Frustrating mic
I'm returning this after a lot of frustration. It is solid, yes that's true. But the battery compartment is fiddly. And worse, I feel like the sound quality is not good. It picks up absolutely everything and even when the meters say it is not peaking, the voice I recorded sounded awful.

Easy to use and improves the audio for your video off DSLR or comparable camera. It's easy to be creative in using this for nice results.

Almost as good as Zoom H6
Once you get in the habit of turning sound on and off on the camera , it seems to work as well as Zoom H6.. The windsock is better.

Not Shure's finest moment.
I'm using this mic to add additional audio to videos recorded on my Sony FRDAX33. So far the audio recorded on the camera's built in mic has been clearer, higher-gain and more detailed than the Shure. I also have Shure Beta57s, 55SH, KSM141 and KSM44. I can't say enough good things about those... the VP83F is the first Shure product I have ever had issue with.

Great, versatile MIC for the price!
I've had the Shure VP83F LensHopper for about 6 months now and used it in a wide range of settings, subjects, and environments. From shooting steam locomotives to interviews and to children's school recitals it has not let me down once. It continues to work as a key part of my video kit. I currently operate mostly Canon DSLRs in a video setting, but have used this microphone to supplement other video cameras as well. For those solely interested i... Show More

Great quality, not the best controls.
In a pinch for a decent mic for all-around rund-and-gun shooting I went with the VP38F LensHopper. This is a great microphone with great sound. Perhaps a $ full-size shotgun would get you better audio, but in my testing, this can't be beat at the price. Nice, slightly warm audio. No hiss on either the card or the line out.I was unsure of how high a quality sound I would get from a 'baby' shotgun mic, but I am impressed! However, I am not sold on t... Show More

Qulity mic
Got this mic to replace my first mic for a web instructional project my brother and I are working on. After researching mics at B&H and looking at the Shure website the impresion I got was of a quality company with quality products. When I first got the mic and opened the box the quality of the packaging confirmed the initial impression of the company.Removing the mic from the box the all metal body and build quality is what I was looking for. Best DSLR Audio Purchase to Date
I have owned and used Shure products for many years, mostly in live sound and recording. Bought this with confidence based on those experiences. I used it yesterday for the first time for on-location interviews in a SportsPlex with lots of background noise and was very pleased with its performance. Like all DSLR videographers, I'm caught up in the never ending search for a more efficient method to capturing professional quality audio in a lightwe... Show More

Improves Camcorder Sound - Substantially
Sound quality(both clarity and strength), and ease of use, are absolutely as advertised. Glad I bought it. And the sound that is sent to be recorded to my Canon Vixia audio file is just as good as the sound of the file recorded on-board the mic. I suspect that for most people, they will want to turn the audio-in on their camera down about as low as they can, because the SHURE sends a very strong signal. Even with the SHURE Gain set at about half (30 or 60). If you hate your camcorder's sound, buy this puppy. You will almost certainly be glad you did.

Awesome for DSLR
It's built like a tank, sounds fantastic, and the ability to record crystal clear and hiss-free audio directly to memory is a killer feature. The pass-through signal can be set quite strong which allows the horrible DSLR preamps to be turned way down as well, eliminating most hiss when recording to camera too! It's well balanced and well designed (if a bit heavy due to the all-metal body... which is a good thing in general). Battery life is so-so... Show More

Awesome
One of the most solid and well built devices I've owned in a long time. It really has everything you could ask for in a product of this type at this price. The headphone jack and the visual levels meter for monitoring audio was perfect for my DLSR. Only downside was formatting flash cards... if your on a Mac you need to partition your cards using Apple Disk Utility; MBR (partition) + Xfat. Then the device will give an error when reading the card but then you can reformat it using the internal Shure utility. In another other format the Shure mic will give an error when reformatting the card.

A HUGE upgrade for the bmpcc audio!
I wanted a good audio device (shotgun style) for my blackmagic pocket camera, but didn't want to buy an external recorder and a shotgun (too expensive for me and hard to use in solo). I know that bmpcc preamp is kinda poor, so I wanted an alternative solution to a direct microphone. This product is the answer!
