Hadn't upgraded my travel camera in several years. Last one was very good in many ways, but had no viewfinder. Never again. So, I tried this ZS50 with EVF. I bought this camera to use as a point and shoot when it was inconvenient to carry a full equipment bag. I was looking for a compact camera that offered a great optical zoom feature. Nature shots in the wild generally require zoom. I upgraded form Lumix DMC-ZS25 after much use and abuse. The DMC-ZS50 has some great features that I'm impressed with and takes good pics. I take a lot of pics of my kids, they are active and catching that action is easier on this camera even when zoomed across the field/court. I also do a lot of hiking and kayaking. I have the requirement of shooting both video and stills in situations where I cannot take a larger camera. To be able to take stills while shooting 1080 video is a real plus. Bought this to replace an old Canon point-and-shoot from 2006, and it turned out to be a downgrade. This took terrible photos in auto mode on a recent vacation, and experimenting with program auto mode, +/- EV, and scene mode did not help. Very good compact camera, best on the market
I needed a compact camera that I could carry with me all the time. But it had to have a viewfinder because for the life of me I can't see how anyone can use a LCD screen on the back of a camera in bright sunlight. Beware of what isn't obvious...
At first glance this camera looks like a near perfect sub-compact. And in may respects it is. But for the intended audience, mostly Jpeg shooters, know that you cannot adjust sharpness, contrast, saturation, or noise reduction in camera. You can select many different color profiles, but you don't have control of those parameters. I initially liked this camera in spite of its poor image quality and lack of low-light performance. But after one year of ownership I now regret my purchase. After fewer than (an estimated) 1,000 shutter activations the viewfinder is broken. It's as if it's misaligned. Lots of useful features but body inferior to ZS3
I upgraded from my 10 year old ZS3 which still works. The ZS3 has a more solid feel, more metal than the ZS50. My main reason for upgrading was I need a quick & easy way to transfer my pictures from the camera to my smart phone without using a computer. The ZS3 does not have WiFi capability. I use this for travel photos mostly and the zoom if very important both for distance and sharp quality. I had a Sony HX20v and the lcd screen was scratched and dim. I am having more eyesight problems so I thought I would try the panasonic for the Electronic View Finder. I had the ZS40 and, for me, this is a useful upgrade, including the much higher resolution EVF, automatic EVF/LCD switching, better grip on the front and a time lapse mode. I shoot people, buildings and landscapes at home and when travelling, primarily on cruises. I generally make 4x6 prints to include in ongoing scrapbooks; nevertheless, I shoot at high resolution. Weighs a little world a lot
I love this little camera. It replaced my Lumix ZS20 which I took around the world for a number of years. The beauty of this camera is it's footprint. Pocketable Power
I have wanted a nimble alternative to my full-size DSLR for years. Most point-and-shoot cameras didn't fit my bill--I am too old school to compose at arms length peering at the back of the camera. The eye-level viewfinder on this camera was a first draw; the zoom was another. While I still ended u getting a mirrorless system for portability, the Lumix is the the camera I can have with me at all times with no hassles. One thing to be aware of is that although a 720mm (equivalent) is great magnification, you have to have rock-steady hands or extremely good light to use it!
