great camera price/peformance value

Aug 24, 2019

My Sony FS5 has served me well, but I frequently had issues grading Sony color science and noisy S-Log recordings. As I also own a Pany GH5, I decided to use the EVA1 as my A camera, and find it was a good move. I much prefer Panasonic color science, have less noise issues with V-Log, better codec options, RAW output, and a few other features that make the EVA1 a substantial step up at a moderate cost. The (very) weak spots of the EVA1 are the ... Show More

What I've Always Wanted

Aug 12, 2019

I come from FS7/RED DSMC2 recently into the world of Panasonic. This camera does everything I need. Dual native ISO. RAW or Prores HQ via SDI to Atomos Inferno, hi resolution, 14 stops of dynamic range, great skin tones and a large colour gamut, it's modular - can be mounted on a gimbal if stripped down or built up into a large rig (and bonus, I get timecode without the need for that ridiculous Sony back). What I really love is that storage... Show More

Best Super35mm camera under $10k

Jun 1, 2019

This is the best Super35mm cinema camera under $10k. Amazing image quality, beautiful color, great and useful codecs and ProRes and raw output when needed. Beautiful image - I've used the FS7, FS5, C200, and C300II and this is a combination of my favorite form factor and image. Nice work, Panasonic. At its new lower price, it really is a steal. Just make sure to get an external monitor (the Shinobi or Focus or Swit 55-C are all good options and won't add much to the cost of the cmaera).

Best bang for you buck

May 28, 2019

I purchased a EVA1 several months ago for a documentary project that we have been working on and have not been disappointed. My previous camera was a fs7 mkI and while it had a fantastic feature set it lacked one simple thing, a good look out of camera. The EVA1 delivers that with its VLOG profile. Skin tones look fantastic, highlights are clean and creamy. Its very easy to grade and finesse in to where you like it, honestly its one of the best l... Show More

Great camera

Apr 8, 2019

I attended a Panasonic cinematographers round table in Hollywood that tipped me over the edge on this camera. That, along with the significant price cut. Was previously considering the UMP and C200. The EVA1 is a versatile camera that suits my documentary style of shooting well. Pairs great with Lumix GH cameras for B and C cams. So far it has been a workhorse on two docs, and a reality show. Definitely recommend the Zacuto Z-Finder, as the comme... Show More

Fantastic little camera

This is my 2nd review for the Eva1. Ive posted the first review a while back when I had one Eva and only done one job with it. Well now I own two of these babies and they have been working non stop. This camera is fantastic for the price. Beautiful color palette, great low light performance, lightweight and easy to use. Ive shot docudramas for TV, commercials, corporate and web content and the clients love the results. Sure there are some drawbac... Show More

Not perfect but outstanding for the price

Dec 6, 2018

Ive owned two of these cameras now for over a year and they have been hard at work. Love the image quality and skin tone it produces...love the dual ISO which is a life saver at low light situations...love the easy menu, EF mount, lightweight, SD cards. Sure the LCD is useless but if you are a pro you need a good viewfinder anyway... other complaints about not being to record at this quality with that bit rate well guess what, many people wont ne... Best in class

Nov 16, 2018

This is hands down the best cinema camera in its price range by a long shot. Yes, you can complain about the touch screen monitor, its not great, but the image quality, colour science and in particular, skin tones, are second to none at this price. Extremely clean dual ISO. Very well-designed. Rugged, but lightweight. Easy to access and navigate menus. Incredible power usage. I have used sub $20K cameras from Canon, Sony, Blackmagic and RED, an... Show More

Hi haters, bye haters

Oct 4, 2018

Why compare this to the gh5? The gh5 doesn't even have a professional size sensor. 3/4rds are for chumps. If you are a professional Videographer who actually gets paid, all these comparison reviews are a waste of time to read. The gh5 is for kids. This is for pros.

Very contradictory thoughts

Aug 13, 2018

I've tried the camera alone and paired with Atomos Shogun Inferno. Internal 4K 400 MB/s ALL-I is great, 2K 240fps works fine either. Still no ability to record 4K 60fps 10bit in-camera. The dual native ISO system should've been working great, but the noise level is still not the same at native ISO 800 and native 2500, with the noise pattern pretty noticeable throughout the whole range(the noise is totally manageable with noise reduction plugins).... Great Camera for the Price!

Jul 17, 2018

This camera is a machine! For the price you wont get a better deal for the image quality! I have worked with a lot of different cameras in this size and scale and in my opinion Panasonic delivers the best image quality and color (Minus some green tinting) than other brands. The colors on this camera just hold and give you a vibrant image when that's what your looking for!

Noisy at all ISO's

Jun 28, 2018

I was excited about the prospect of a "baby Varicam" for documentary shooting but this camera is a work in progress. I found the the noise level was unacceptable even at 800 ISO which leads me to suspect that compression rates may be part of the issue. B&H shows the maximum bit rate at 4K to be 400MB/S but that's wrong, it's currently actually 150mbps, which is less than 1/10th of that. The 400MB/S rate is promised in a "future firmware upgrade".... Show More

Fantastic color, resolution, pict / quirky ergonomics & lcd

Mar 30, 2018

I've had the camera for 2 months now and have to say it continues to grow on me. The image the camera can produce with good lighting is really stunning and cinematic. Low light the camera does fine and better than many but you will still run into noise on native iso 2500 above 2500. Native iso 2500 does well between 800 to 2500, but not so much above. Where the camera is not so great - #1 is the LCD. It is pretty awful and I ended buying a zacuto... Show More

Very Good, but i has some flaws!

Mar 7, 2018

We loved the Eva 1, I bet this is the best camera you can get for this price. The size and the grip is good enough to carry it around the whole day. It is robust, and well designed for documentarist that need a small and powerful camera for a one-man camera. The image is impressive, specially the high iso and the latitude It left my old blackmagic far behind. We are still getting used with the camera, but it is not perfect: - the LCD has a hood t... Varicam color science!

Feb 14, 2018

It took me a while to select a middle range cinema camera while researching the EVA1, C200 and the Ursa MINI Pro. Eventually I settled on the EVA1 and have not regretted it for one second. Easily accessible functions, wonderful dual native ISO (like its Varicam big brothers) light weight, nice side grip with function control and the images! Wow! It sports the same color science as the Varicam line so if you're shooting on those it will easily cut... Show More

Best Bang for your Buck

Feb 4, 2018

Without a doubt the best camera in it's class. Was between this and the C200. But with the future firmware update it's a no brainer to go with panasonic. With Panny you get 5.7k Raw, 4k 60 Raw, as well as a 400mb/s 10 bit codec for broadcast. With the c200 you get 4k raw, 4k 60 raw and a lousy 8 bit codec. Plus with Panny you get 240fps in 2k. Plus I like the color science better from panasonic, the skin tones are nice. Low light I found to be pretty good if you over expose the footage. Very clean, but wouldn't go over 6400 Iso.

I make documentaries exclusively, mostly handheld, and I've been waiting a long time for an affordable 10 bit 422 state-of-the-art cinema style 4K camera that meets contemporary broadcast standards - and the EVA1 is it. With an EVF (I use a Gratical X) and grip extension, the camera is light and comfortable to use for hours on end. And the resulting pictures are stunning, the color you'd expect from Panasonic. I was skeptical but after testing it alongside the c200, this is a PRO camera for an amazing price. Note* this camera currently only accepts up to 128gb SD cards. Also if you plan on shooting 400mbit 4k when that update comes you will need the higher prices SD cards.

I have been on the fence about buying a camera for years...technology moves so quickly and clients always want the latest and greatest. Love my Baby Varicam

Nov 21, 2017

Color rendition and dynamic range are very important to me and my EVA1 excels at both. Skin tones render beautifully (and accurately). Highlights are handled well. Noise is tighter and finer and more appealing to the eye than other cameras in this category so even when it rears its head, it doesn't start to get ugly until you push the ISO over 5000. The EF mount is rock solid. I don't get image shift during focus pulls like I used to with an MFT ... Show More
