Sony HXR-NX80 4K NXCAM with HDR & Fast Hybrid AF
UPC's:
Nice for low-budget corporate.
To clarify: the LCD screen does not operate a touch menu. Yes, it threw me too. You have to use the little joystick in the back; takes some practice. I persuaded my organization, a not-for-profit, to make this purchase. Long story short: it paid off in both convenience and quality. We have shot seated interviews on a set, teleprompter presentations against a green screen, and interactions with our customers outdoors and in a school gymnasium. ... Show More

Disappointed in design
I am rather disappointed with a number of things with this camera compared to other Sony cameras I have purchased. Let me start with the Owners Manual. The instructions for setting up the camera when first receiving it were incomplete, costing me several hours of wasted time. Tech support finally walked me through the simple procedure. Next, I found the Owners Manual very confusing on how to run some of the functions. They reference things you ne... Show More

The Good and the not so Good
I'm not really a fan of small Camcorders, but this camera has Sony's latest Techno. The AF is fast to the point of being to good. I would love a smart AF system over a fast one. It is light, but on a really good tripod, it's too light. Not having all the functions, as buttons and ring control is a draw back for me. The image is sharp, but having both, Sony HXR NX 100, and the HXR NX80, there is a difference when using the digital extender. A col... Show More

Great Value
I've had this camera for about a year now. It has excellent picture quality. This camera is small and lightweight yet has many features found in larger cameras. The camera has the best auto focus of any camera I've owned in the 30 years I've been doing video production. I have always used manual focus but this camera truly lets you use auto in most situations. Full auto is something I never used in any camera before. This camera gets the settin... Show More

Very disappointed
Just received my Sony NX80. Sony really dropped the ball on designing this one. First off, I needed to access the menue to reset the date (no problem, right? NOT) The menue button doesnt work. No trouble shooting options for this malfunction. Finally reached teck support. Instructions said to change this via the menue, turns out you need to use the toggle on the other side of the camera. So wasted a couple hours rereading set up instructions and ... Show More

Good product?
I bought this camcorder to replace my other camcorder PXW-X70 that I bought just last Feb 2017. I am the videographer for wedding and video events. What I don't like about the PXW-X70 was the focus which is extremely BAD. On a wedding shoot, the automatic focus suddenly went out of focus in about 3, 4 seconds (naturally that part of video I have to edit out) and secondly the highest resolution (XAVC HD) yield a video file ending with extention MX... Limitless Possibilities
I've shot clear and amazing interviews, live action (I shoot a lot of BMX racers). The new autofocus smokes the AX100 and I loved the AX100. The ND filters come in handy to fine tune your shot, and love the easy to use manual controls on f stop and noise, etc. When in manual focus you can get your depth of field on if you use the ND and turn down the frame rate. The auto focus mode is where it focuses on the persons face is incredibly reliable. T... Show More

Servo Zoom Noise
When zooming in and out, the servo motor noise is unacceptably audible when wearing headphones, and the noise is captured in the recording itself. When played back, the noise is clear; I returned my purchase. The noise apparently generates via Sonys proprietary shoe attachment as the same noise is present with its other attachments in the cameras sister models. I use the SonyXLR-K2M XLR Adapter Kit with Microphone with the SonyFDR-AX700 4K Camcor... Show More

My opinion for Wedding camera
It is good camera, but not for everyone, if you dedicate yourself to video where you need repeated reactions if it serves you, if your shots are of the day if it serves you, but if you dedicate yourself to social events, weddings, that your shots have to be at night in low light is where you have a bit of trouble, if it is bright, what they do not tell you is that because the pore burst, the image in the blacks is noisy, it is somewhat disappoint... So far so good!
I've been using this camera for my son football season, and I am definitely see a lot of quality in video. I must say, I am a mid-level. I do recognize quality when there is one. I used some other cameras made by Cannon, and I must say this one works well for the sport events. The start up is quick (important!), the focus is fast (important!), the color is great, the compression has no artifacts, no tearing on fast movement, automatic mode is great for very bright or night shooting. So far, I am very satisfied with this camera as a football team dad.

Much better than the PXW-X70...
I was worried this would be a side step and not an upgrade over the PXW-X70 but this is everything I wanted in the original PXW-X70, you won't be dissappointed! PROs: The sensor is MUCH BETTER, cleaner and sharper. Auto focus and face detection is on point, no issues with the camera hunting. Has a designated lanc remote input as opposed to using the multi port. Love the fact there are more resolutions you can choose from. I have had this camera for 2 weeks and have been using it quite a bit. CONs: 60 fps would be nice for 4k / UHD.

Great successor to the X70
Love it. Newer Sony EXMOR RS BSI stacked sensor is a big improvement over the X70's first generation 1 inch-type chip. More dynamic range over the X70 with HLG and SLog gamma curves. (The X70 was stuck in very limited dynamic range rec709 profiles) The new auto focus is crazy good...really impressive. Those are three main improvements, latest sensor that is definitely cleaner, sick AF and much more dynamic range than the X70. I only shoot 4k today so I had no need for 1080 SDI and 1080 10bit. The NX80 was perfect for me.

Great upgrade
I already own an AX33, which Ive been very happy with, but I wish I would have upgraded to this camera sooner. I can now get the depth of field shots that I couldnt before, which makes a huge difference in the quality of what Im shooting. Speed control on the zoom is great too. Solid feel to it, but its not so heavy that youll dread carrying it around at an event. On top of that, I didnt have to buy new memory cards that dont work with any of my other cameras. All in all, Im very happy with this camera.

Sony HXR-NX80 Touch Screen Epic Fail
Item arrived OK, Charged the battery and proceeded to do the setup of the camera. This is when things went from OK to Epic Touch Screen Fail as the touchscreen would not respond. This isn't my first Sony so I know its some kind of manufacture defect or similar issue. Giving 3 star rating as I expect this will be resolved and add a star or two after it is. Here is a short video clip of what is wrong:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrLXz6rXbQ8

Well worth your consideration
Bought this gem of a camera at the last minute for a trip to Masai Mara. Wanted something with good results that can also do well for quick Auto focus shots. This camera is rather incredible. A great ENG style shooter you can trust for consistent results. Decent performance in low light as well . Auto focus is really good, and follows very nicely. This camera is definitely worth considering for nearly any scenario.

Same issue as another rater - the touch panel did not work
Although the Sony HZR-NX80 camera that I received seemed like a well made camera I was unable to operate it as the touch panel was completely unresponsive. I returned the camera as I did not feel I could ever trust it.

Great pro small camera
I have worked with the previous HD model and I feel that this camera is much better. Build well and still takes great quality videos in low light conditions while being light yet having two XLRs for pro sound.
