Sharp, lovely rendering, accurate

Jul 19, 2016

So. Couple things. I went with the intention to buy the Batis 85, but it was out of stock. I decided to try out the GM 85 in the store on an a7rii body and I was just amazed! Right there and then I decided to fork out the extra money for this lens. The lens is no where as heavy and unbalanced as people say. In fact it feels very normal to me. Also, the talk about the noisy focusing... well, if it wasn't mentioned in other fora I would not have ev... Show More

Stunning portrait lens for A7s11

Jul 4, 2016

I had the opportunity to use this lens for three days, before it was stolen. I remember when I realized it was missing that at least I had captured some images on it, beforehand and they are gorgeous. This lens works beautifully with the Sony a7s11, for both video and for stills. I've been shooting portraits and working on a web-episodic narrative that involves a lot of facial expression and detail, and the FE 85mm GM is the perfect portraiture l... Show More

Ourstanding image quality but very noisy focus and aperture

Jun 30, 2016

I loved the images produced, the sharpest and smoothest bokeh lens I've ever used, but the focus noise is far too loud for a lens of this cost. I also found when adjusting the aperture from wide open, to make an awful sounding noise as well. I returned it for the Zeiss Batis and have been very satisfied.

Amazing lens, a real keeper, disregard the negative reviews

Jun 23, 2016

I agree with all of the positive reviews. WOW what a lens. The negative reviews are to be ignored. The AF noise is audible but barely. AF speed is very good for this type of glass. Eye AF works great and is accurate. Build is rock solid. Love the aperture ring. Bokeh is wonderful smooth and natural. The edge to edge sharpness is incredible even at f/1.4. Video with this lens is a dream with silent continuous AF. This is a reference lens that gives a special look that grabs you when you review the images

This is a beautiful lens. Stays tack sharp edge-to-edge. It gives lovely, perfectly round bokeh when the aperture is wide. One of the coolest featuresone I'd never seen until this lensis the switch that allows you to de-click the aperture for when you're shooting video!

Best Image Quality Period!

I Bought a used copy here from B & H. My other Fe Lenses are the 16-35 & the 35mm 1.4 Distagon. The 35mm focuses faster, but that's to be expected with the difference in focal length. The 85mm still does a more than decent job & the focus lock button combined with facial recognition/eye auto focus almost makes it a mute point. When it does focus hunt & i have to get the shot,i simply flip the manual focus switch on the lens & it's done. As far as... Show More

This is the best lens I have ever used for portraits. I will use this lens from now on as my go to lens for portraits and headshots. I have also used it outside photographing landscapes and the pictures came out beautiful. I don't believe I have ever used a lens that produces such great pictures.

The problem with a lot of online reviews is that they are either two ends of the spectrum. Either people that are really happy or excited or people who are severely disappointed and usually angry. I actually read through some of the reviews left on the Sony 85 GM lens and am surprised when somebody faults a lens for being high Level of autofocus mode when every online review of the lens says that this is a noisy lens. Great Glass!!!

Jun 8, 2016

Great optical performance. I have the original A7s and focusing is mediocre on it. On the a6300 it focus really fast so I'm sure it works amazing on an A7rii. Pros: It's very sharp across the frame. Love the bokeh. I found the loud auto focus a non issue. Con: AF too loud if you're a: A) Secret Spy B) Creepy Perv. But if you're either or, I recommend a 400-800mm.

I AM KEEPING THIS LENS!

Jun 7, 2016

This is my new favorite lens! For me, it beats out the Zeiss 85/1.8 Batis, the Leica 75/1.4 Summilux, The Canon 85/1.2, and all others I've tried (see my blog link below for more detailed info). When Sony announced the G Master line of lenses, I took a lot of their claims with a grain of salt - as I always do. I tried to reason with myself that I bought into a mirrorless system for size and weight, and the Zeiss Batis made much more sense in that... Show More

Spectacular Lens

Jun 2, 2016

This lens is everything it claim to be. So many things to love about this lens. Very high quality build and feel. Stunning & spectacular results when mounted to a7rll the warmth of color, sharpness & clarity will amaze you everytime. The creaminess of the bokeh will have you suddenly thinking about butterscotch. Aperture ring dial on body is the best thing ever. Yes! It's a heavy piece of glass, but you'll get over that quickly once you see the results.

Best portrait lens I've ever used by far

May 30, 2016

Stupid sharp, fast AF even at f2, beautiful color, optionally declicked aperture, absolutely stunning lens. It's heavy and wide and very impressive looking. Make sure your studio has space for the minimum focal depth on your subjects, but this puts to shame the canon 50mm 1.2L, 135mm f2L, rokinon 85mm cine, and, for portraits, the Sony/Zeiss 24-70 f4. I'm using Sony A7s2 with it and couldn't be happier.

Disappointing Focus

May 26, 2016

Just received my FE 85mm f/1.4 GM and although the bokeh and sharpness is excellent, the focussing speed, hunting and noise is disappointing to say the least. Forget continuous mode focussing with eye focus - makes the lens unusable at times. On a side note, I also own the Batis 85mm and although the bokeh isn't quite as sweet, I find it is the clear winner when focusing in continuous mode and using eye focus which is substantially better in both cases. I'm hoping Sony will be able to improve these issues with a firmware update as I'm seriously considering returning the lens.

Best auto focusing 85mm I have used

May 20, 2016

I had the Batis 85 for a few months and have not 1 negative thing to say about it. But once I shot with this lens I knew I couldn't go back. Its sharp as it gets wide open! Only the outs may be sharper wide open, but Im not sure how much. The transition from in to out of focus areas is amazing. sure it makes some noise focusing and it isn't a speedy lens, but the batis wasn't super fast either. No 85 1.4 or 1.2 I have shot have been very fast to focus. Image quality is what matters to me. This is my personal favorite!

Fantastic

May 18, 2016

Quite sharp at f/1.4 edge to edge, razor sharp from f/2. Surpasses the Batis 85mm in terms of sharpness, micro contrast and bokeh. Although the output is superior, the GM is more expensive, allot bigger, slower and louder focusing. I would not consider my GM copy to be loud when focusing, but the Batis is near silent. I have used quite a bit of 85mm lenses on a number of systems. With the GM, they key point for me is eye-focus tracking. In the pa... Show More

I use this for portrait, sports, and any subject that I want to stand out. I used it for shooting a dance rehearsal last week in a very dark theatre, shooting wide open, at f/1.4. About 99% sharply focused shots. I should state I am using this lens with the Sony A7r2 body. In low light the af will hunt at times, but in any reasonable light af is very reliable, and fast. Nice to have a sharp native lens for my A7Rii.

May 17, 2016

I've had the Sony A7Rii for close to a year now and have been using my Canon glass with a Metabones adapter. This combo has worked great for landscapes. But for portraits situations it was more of a hassle getting quick focus and I seemed to lean a lot more on my 5D MK3 to get the shot. Plus I couldn't use some features on the camera like eye detect. May 8, 2016

Side by side comparison, it locks on and focuses slower than the Batis 85mm, and thus, the shutter delay is more than a second. The price and weight is almost double that of the Batis. The Batis offers true silent focusing while the Batis will wake the dead. If I'm not mistaken, there's no stabalising elements in the lense. The Batis has one. People buy this for the hype, slightly better bokeh for pixel peepers, and to post photos of boxes on facebook groups. Plus, with recent reviews, everyone cancelled their Batis orders to get the GM. =/
