Great lens with the best out of focus rendering.
85mm is a great focal length for portraits, both head shots and to include a little more background, the FE 85 GM is one of the best on the market in my eye. The OOF rendering is so smooth and visually appealing. The aperture ring on the lens is great for controlling the aperture on the fly, much more comfortable than using a control wheel. It can also be de-clicked for silent aperture changing in video if you shoot video.

Best 85 mm lens ever !
I have the Sony 85 f/1.8 and also the Canon 85 f/1.2L lens. I am not going to write an extensive review here, i see that most have already been said. However, i did an extensive side by side with the Sony 85 f/1.8 and f/1.4 and the GM lens definitely have better image quality and shows significantly lower (to not at all) CA. Amazing lens
Bokeh is beautiful. A little on the heavy side but worth its weight in gold. My first photo shoot at 1.4 consisted of some portraits and lifestyle shots to update a client's new website update. Post processing was minimal. Very impressed!

Perfect Video Interview Lens
I use a Sony a7sii and a Sony Fs5 as my camera duo on almost every interview... And the A7sii with this 85mm at f/1.4 is as beautiful as any lens/camera combo I have ever worked with. The bokeh itself is amazing, but the edge to edge clarity it provides is absolutely stunning. If you throw a 6 stop filter on this and grab some daylight shots at f/1.4 of a subject outside the separation of your subject from the background is wonderful.

Spectacular product
The lens+filter arrived on time with no damage to the package. Everything was as expected. Tremendous build quality, great finish. Now performance.. This lens while rather expensive it most definitely reflects the price. Incredibly sharp lens made for bokeh. If small details matter to you, I'd recommend this any day. Mine is currently paired with the Sony A7Rii.

Amazing Shallow depth of feild
Finally a usable f1.4 With my Nikon lenses I always avoided using them on 1.4 because I just cant get the eyes on focus every-time which annoys me. But with my new A7R III and the amazing eye focus feature. I JUST LOVE IT! The lens is very sharp, and it has amazing professional build quality. Waiting for more GM lenses from Sony.

Awesome Lens
I just finished an engagement shoot and I this lens is nothing less than spectacular. I like to shoot wide open and this lens is tach sharp. I found the lens weight to fine. I've heard a great deal of complaints about the lens being noisy but I didn't notice it. Focused fast and the bokeh is nothing but creamy AWESOMENESS!!! A must have for professional photographers.

terribly slow and dodgy AF
The lens is sharp, perfect, great, amazing yes. Go into the studio and stop down past F4 in a fully lit room and forget eye autofocus. It literally takes forever finding focus, and you lose at least 5 out of every 10 shots indoors. Useless indoor lens. Useless lens for anything backlit. Useless lens at any event whatsoever. If i had known it was only an OUTDOOR ONLY (IN FULL LIGHTING) lens i would never have bought it.

2nd times the charm
I tried this lens when it came out and some of the features did not work with my Sony FS7. I have since upgraded the camera's firmware, and I suspect the lenses firmware might also have been improved since I first tried this lens with the FS7 last year. With the updated firmware, all features (auto focus, etc) work and the lens at 1.4 is gorgeous. I was debating between this lens and a much more expensive cine lens and this one came out a winner.

Outstanding
One word. Outstanding. I haven't tried some of the over the top expensive Zeiss lenses, but I know that I don't have to as this thing is outstanding on my A7Rii. Now of course I have to go out and get some other G Master lenses. Darn it! If you are on the fence, go for this lens. It is great. I tried the Canon 1.2, but it was just entirely too slow for me, and I didn't get that much more sharpness in the lens. Sony hit it out of the park with this one.

Great image quality, terrible low-light/backlit focusing
The good: Superb quality. Great for portraits. The bad: It's heavy af, but I'd be okay with that. I'm not okay with how badly it performs in low-light/backlit scenarios. Major Focussing Issues!
I had really high hopes for this lens. I just switched over from Nikon, and I really loved the 85mm that I had. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst focusing lenses that I've ever used. It does A LOT of searching, especially in low light. I'm a wedding photographer, and sometimes I need to capture a quick moment, and I can say that I have missed many opportunities due to this lens just searching for focus. Not cool.

One of the best portrait lens.
I really like this lens for portrait photography uses. It has fantastic sharpness and bokeh that I never doubt about its performance. Although the AF speed is quite slow and noisy, it doesn't matter for me.

Stop debating and buy it already!
I am in love with this lens and i use it at every shoot i do now. The bokeh is almost perfectly round and the dof is incredible. You can focus the nose and blur the ears if you wanted to.

Much better than Canon 85/1.2 L II
I used to own a Canon 85mm f/1.2L II which I used with 5D mark II. This Sony lens is much sharper, focuses much faster, and most importantly has much, much less chromatic aberrations. I get a lot fewer misses when auto-focusing, Canon seemed to always miss a bit unless I focused manually. Love and Hate
I buy this lens to change for sony 90 macro The 90 is ok but.....sorry not magic... I have the 35 1.4 for photo and video... In mode super 35 whit my a7rll it is really imbatible.. This lens is super bokeh like my 35 but...the af is really noise... I use af continues mode in my camera when shooting video, bye bye focus man I love this lens for the bokeeh but i hate this lens for the noise AF.....you choice, look the pics.
