Nice focusing range, good resolution for pocket camera

Jan 6, 2020

This camera was purchased to replace (yet another) failed point and shoot camera. The ruggedness, water proofing and 1amp hour battery were the deciding factors. There are two things that were problematic: 1. The GPS feature drains the battery quickly if not changed from the default setting that optimized GPS accuracy to the setting that optimizes battery life. A camera that goes dead (when not being used) in a day is not acceptable, however... Show More

I did not realize how complicate to was when I bought it. This is my 3rd Olympus camera . It didnt even come with a manual - I had to order oneand wait for it to come.

Great little camera

Nov 7, 2019

This is a versatile travel camera that has met my needs for general photography. It takes good photos in raw that do need to be processed to get the best out of them. As long you don't expect DSLR quality you won't be disaapointed! It is portable, user friendly, and proven reliable.

Battery compartment was not secure- let in dirt

Jul 23, 2019

I bought the Tough TG-5 for a trip that included boat rides when the camera might get wet. I never used the camera under water. When I opened the battery and memory card compartment at the end of the trip, dirt had gotten into the compartment. Since dirt got in, then I am sure that the camera is not waterproof, as it is advertised. I am returning the camera to try a new one, and hope it will function better than the one I initially got.

T-as in Terrible

I have this camera. Every time I go to use it the battery is dead. Really short life on the battery. Yes, turn off the GPS. What's the point in having GPS if you can't use it? None. Picture quality mediocre. Focus Mediocre. Underwater use? Mediocre. Not a good camera. Wish I did not buy.

Underwater gem

Jun 24, 2019

I bought my TG-5 the day before leaving for a recent trip. It speaks to how simple it can be to get good images with this camera. Fully featured but with good optional accessories. While the new TG-6 has some nice additions, the '5' is a very good value right now. I've already ordered the fisheye and the ring light options. Shooting RAW files is a huge benefit of this camera.

Batteries are VERY disappointing

Apr 11, 2019

I know this is out of production and I can hope the newest iteration is an improvement, but I just threw my TG-4 into metal recycling. The camera itself is OK. I like the RAW capture feature, because the Olympus conversion to jpeg ruins the value of the high pixel count by smearing the result. I have never been able to get the panorama feature to work for me. What I ended up being TOTALLY frustrated with is the BATTERY. If I leave the camera for ... Show More

Tough, very complicated- Mac doesnt recognize the raw files

Apr 8, 2019

Many good things but overly complicated and instructions are lacking. There are over 15 different image capture formats labeled using on or two letters but no explanation as to what they really mean. Also, the instructions fail to explain how to change the settings. Someone online had figured out you have to briefly press two buttons at the same time for the format option to be seen. Additionally, Apple does not recognize the raw format, which is... Show More

Very Different from Previous TG Models

Apr 6, 2019

I am a marine surveyor, which means that my cameras are subject to rough humid condition, varying light conditions from bright sunlight to pitch dark photography. I have worked with Previous Olympus Tough models for about 15 years. I find this model very different from previous models and far more difficult to work with. Colleagues who own similar Nikon tough models are getting far better night time photographs. For example, they simply set their... Show More

Fun Little Camera

Apr 1, 2019

A great little camera to bring to the beach. It doesnt rival the quality of a DSLR in a housing but its a fraction of the cost. I think of it as a beach toy that I can always bring with me. I also purchased the fisheye lens but dont really like the added bulk of the attached lens. Battery life and low light performance could and probably will be improved in the next iteration.

Best camera for micro ability

Apr 1, 2019

This little gem has been going everywhere with me since last 10 days. I have shot mostly underwater and micro/macro shots of little things. I have printed a couple of images as large as 20 X 24 inches. Excellent quality. I was actually not expecting as much from this little point and shoot. There is noise visible on the computer in some images but when you print them somehow the noise level decreases automatically which is great for people who do... Show More

What a piece of junk, save your money

Mar 3, 2019

the user interface is impossible. the lcd washes out in daylight making it useless. the color saturation is very poor. primary reason purchased was for 30 day trip to Australia w/ a single dive day so did not have to take housing. advertised to 50, but shut down at 35- 40. tried to return, but beyond return so b&h would not take back. its a paper weight

Researched it, bought it, and immediately took it on an Adirondack backpacking trip. Great photos and video! Easy to use with my gloves on. Impervious to the snow, cold, and many bumps and bangs.

Nice Compact Camera

Feb 24, 2019

I bought this camera for my recent trip to Costa Rica. I have a full frame DSLR, but was planning ziplining and other activities not conducive to bringing it along. I was seeking something rugged, waterproof (for possible snorkeling), and with some manual controls. What sold me is that it has aperture priority mode and exposure compensation controls (and the ability to capture raw files). The image quality is good and the controls reasonably easy... Show More

A strong C

Feb 12, 2019

The rear screen is good for composition, and not much else. Roughly 40% of the photos Ive taken so far are not in focus, or at least the focus is not where I had intended it to be. Dynamic range is horrible, but perhaps that cant be helped given the sensor size. I do like that the menu system is almost identical to my Olympus Micro 4/3 cameras; and I also like the clever removable ring around the lens which can accept a filter holder or a ring light. The camera also seems to excel at macro photography. Still, overall I would call the camera mediocre.

focusing issues

Feb 5, 2019

I purchased on of these to use while around water, I shoot video content full time, this camera continually changes its focal point while shooting video or photo, very hard to use and keep a subject in focus as it keeps zooming in and out. Very disappointing as a lot of content is unusable. I would send it back if I could. Josh James - The Kiwi Bushman https://www.youtube.com/user/joshjameskiwibushman

Real Tough TG5

Jan 11, 2019

Inadvertently included my TG5, in a soft case, with a load of my load of whites set to Hot in a front load washer that ran for 43 minutes. Then it got transferred to the front load dryer also set to Hot. After about 10 minutes I began to wonder what the thumping sound was going on with the dryer. The TG5 survived and I took pictures with it after I let it cool down for 20 minutes. I am pleased with all the features of the camera and convert the ... Show More

Great underwater camera

Dec 29, 2018

I took this on vacation to the Grand Cayman Islands. It was great. I ended up using it a lot more than my GoPro because it takes video and I can switch and take lots of pictures. It shoots RAW which is a big plus. I also bought the fisheye lens attachment and the Flash diffuser for macro stuff.

Almost great

Dec 28, 2018

Ive had my eyes on this for a while, for a personal documentary project, and then decided to buy one for an assignment that included water activities. Being a fan of high quality, small sensor cameras such as Ricoh GRD and Panasonic LX3-7 I expected similar quality. The TG5 disappoints a little bit. Colors are great as usual with Olympus. Noise on the other hand is disturbing even at 100 ISO. Dynamic range is surprisingly good. Handling is good.... Show More

Purple spot

Oct 2, 2018

I had a TG4 that flooded when I was cleaning the camera. I had liked it quite a bit so wanted to replace this with the TG5. I found that there was a purple spot in the center of the images when the center was dark and other areas light. In researching this I found others have had the problem. It is suggested that this is lens flare but if so is unacceptable. Have returned camera.https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4287370

great underwater camera

Sep 24, 2018

This camera is a great buddy to take with you. I like to do open water swimming and it is small enough that you can just stuff it in your suit and pull out to capture some of those beautiful moments. You can shoot in raw and do some good editing. The video is particularly good and better than the photos I would say. It is not a full frame or anything like that, but for this price and ability to use the camera on the go due to its small size, a great buy if you do a lot of water activity.
