Finally, a travel zoom I can love.
For a long time, I have been attracted to the idea of a compact Travel Zoom camera as my wife and I travel a good deal, mostly on cruises. And so, over the years, I have tried a good many (8 or 9) travel zoom cameras, and found every one to be flawed in some way or another for my use. The Sony HX80 is my latest try and by far the closest to my ideal. Image quality is very good to ISO 400 and ISO 800 and even 1600 are useful. With the electronic v... Show More

Excellent Advanced Pocket-Sized Digital Camera
I am still learning to take full advantage of this camera's many options and features packed into a small, pocket-sized unit. It's trial and error at the moment and I'm not always choosing the right picture-taking options for the circumstances, but you can always use the easiest settings until you gain more experience. In any case, the picture quality is outstanding. The pop-up viewer is a welcomed feature although it is a bit hard to operate pro... Show More

Surprisingly complex in a good way, great performance for $$
(I compare to a Canon G7X ii and 5D3 & 24-70 ii). Reviewed with higher expectations than most buyers might have, YMMV. This review is for my replacement HX80, B&H quickly replaced a really funky first unit. Thanks, B&H!!! Biggest issue: JPG only. Colors are sometimes ugly, and very difficult to correct in post. Other times they are near-perfect, compared to the other cams being ColorChecker calibrated! Very slow shot-to-shot in single-shot mode. ... Show More

Great little camera that I would definitely purchase again!
I would likely be giving this little camera a 5 if it were not for the problems connecting to my smartphone and tablet. So far, no luck. I intend to call support, but just haven't had time yet. Likely more to do with the app rather than the camera. Now, for the camera.... I have owned a variety of cameras from old film SLRs to Digital SLRs to a host of point and shoots. I have only owned this one a couple weeks, but wow! The quality of the pictur... Show More

Almost everything I need
When travelling this has been a really outstanding upgrade to any previous point & shoot I've owned. Better pictures than I imagined possible and still fits in my pocket. The pop up viewfinder essential to me in many situations. The trade off of a small sensor size for large zoom range becomes apparent in low light and I often get out of focus shots. Somewhere solid to place the camera and a shutter delay lets me get pretty nice low light shots t... Show More

Great small camera with super zoom!
I own my Sony HX80 camera for about one week and I like it very much. I can carry it in my pocket everywhere. 30x high quality Zeiss optical zoom lens allows taking photos of wild life and other distant objects. This camera has effective image stabilization indispensable for high zoom photos. Its built-in pop-up electronic viewfinder allows taking photos in sunny weather when the picture on its LCD is almost invisible. Its 180 degrees tilting LCD... Show More

It's okay
Photos and features are good for its price range and I do recommend this camera normal used. The camera is on the heavy side and is small. So it always felt like it was going to fall out of my fingers. Its best for two hands operation or grip it with one hand. Because the camera is so compact, when I grip it with one hand, I always hit the menu or display button and change the display. I have x-large size hands. One issue for me is the memory c... Good Value
I bought the HX80 just before departing on a vacation trip to Berlin and Copenhagen. I have a RX100-III, and the plan was to use both cameras: RX100 indoors or at night because of its low light (low-noise) capabilities, and the HX80 outdoors where I might need more reach and noise would not be a problem. In use, these proved to be true. The camera works well, the 720 mm zoom is amazing. But there are some drawbacks: - It does NOT record Raw image... Show More

better than expected and very satisfied
Although I have several pro cameras and lens, while doing chores and errands I have missed more photo ops than I wish. I was looking for a point and shoot pocket sized camera that was reasonably priced, had a viewfinder and had at least a 20x zoom for capturing wildlife. I have taken several hundred diverse photos in the week since I received the camera. It is easy to use but still offers a lot of options. I learned the menu quickly. The buttons ... Show More

Worth waiting for
I wanted this camera from when it was first announced months ago, but had to wait a long time for it to be available (available in Australia, that is). Worth the wait. I wanted the extra zoom, the viewfinder, and the small size. It all works well. I use it on the P setting; it focuses quickly, gets the exposure about right, and the pictures are good. I like the automatic switching from viewfinder to screen according to whether my eye is close, an... Show More

Small camera, HUGE Pictures. Great Buy!!!
As a website owner and ebayer, I wanted a good quality camera with easy transfer capabilities. I was sick of my iPhone dark and blurry pictures. This Sony DSC-HX80 works like a dream. Close up pictures are simply amazing. Distance is very acceptable too, especially for a camera that fits in your pocket. This camera is not bloated with useless features. It is made for the person who wants to point and shoot. Colors are bright and realistic. The pr... Show More

Great small camera
I you are looking for a small camera with a long focal reach, this is for you. My preliminary tests of this camera confirm that the pictures you will take will be sharp. In auto mode the camera operates quickly. With the view finder and rear view screen, it is easy to take pictures in most lighting conditions. I suggest that you order an additional battery with the external charger. this will allow you to charge a battery while taking picture... Show More

Camera is ok...Recording is good!
Was looking for a small, compact camera to use during a trip to Japan. Pros: Small, compact, and light Easy to use menu Smooth videos Great zooming Viewfinder and flash works well Sharing images and video is pretty easy and their mobile app works like a charm. Long battery life Cons: Auto-Focus did not work very well for me. I stayed mostly in Inteligent/Superior Auto mode. Sometimes would focus exactly on what I needed, but often would ... Show More

My review of the Sony HX-80
First off this camera is an excellent for the price for a carry about point and shoot with a popup view finder. The cameras long zoom lens will take a little getting used to, at 720 mm can be a little hard to handle but it does work well and allows you to get some great zoom pictures. This camera is a 1/2.3 sensor which is you standard point and shoot size and will not go much beyond an 8X10 print, yes you can do bigger but your print will get mu... Show More

Great complementary camera
I now have 2 small cameras in my pouch: The RX100ii and the one I got as soon as it came out: the HX80. The first is for amazing low light performance and general purpose non-super zoom requirements. The new HX80 is for any daylight photography where I get great quality up to 60X from a pocket camera.I have graduated to the HX80 from the bulkier HX1, HX100 and HX300. I also have the discontinued Sony x1.7 multiplier, so the HX80 can offer X50 opt... Show More

So, so
Haven't been home to print any photos, but image quality looks good. I wanted point and shoot as well as compactness - great on all counts. My negatives have to do with its operation: It's slow to transition to take a new photo. If you are too quick to move the zoom in or out, etc, you are altering the image you just shot and it's a scramble to get back to shooting new images. The other thing I notice is it takes the slightest touch and all of a... Show More

Don't Expect Too Much
I bought this camera for a six-week trip to Europe. I usually shoot with a Canon 5DIII and L lenses. I knew that this Sony DSC-HX80 would not be great, but I did not want to lug around my heavy Canon equipment. The main utility of this camera for me was the focal length. I found that the photos take with my iPhone 7, within the normal range of my iPhone (not zoomed in) were better than the Sony. The Sony is okay in good light. In low light it is... Show More

By far the best point and shoot traveler camera
I used to own Sony HX50 but need to find a replacement. The new HX80 now has a pop up view finder which is very helpful in bright light. The photos quality is sharp and clear almost comparable with my Nikon D5000 DSL under good lighting. It is very fast in focusing even at telephoto range. Very nice camera in a very small package
The first thing I noticed is just how small this camera is. I was, and still am, concerned about it slipping out of my hand, as the grip along the right side is also quite small. However, if you are looking for an ultra zoom P&S camera that will fit in your pocket, as I was, this may be the camera for you. The quality of the image is superb for such a small sensor.
