Quality Results in a Convenient and Attractive Package

Jan 9, 2017

I purchased this lens to add a wider angle capability to my Pen-F. I already own the excellent Oly 12-40mm Pro zoom, but that lenses feels more at home on my E-M1. My testing shows the 12mm/f/2.0 lens to more than acceptably sharp center to corner wide open, with the best results coming at f/5.6, no surprise. Other micro 4/3 lenses with this focal length may exceed the Oly's performance on the laboratory bench, but I prefer shooting on the street. The compact size, performance and price point make this lens a winner in my book.

Fast, sharp and light

Sep 15, 2011

I use this lens on a Panasonic AF100 video camera, and I really like the size and weight as well as the picture quality. It also focuses fast, and the manual focus mode with distance markings gives me a type of confidence that you never really have with modern focus-by-wire lenses. Olympus should include a lens hood at this price range, but I can't complain too much. I haven't had it long enough to vouch for its durability, but let's hope for the best. Not much bokeh of course, being so wide angle, but that's to be expected.

New out and about favorite

Jan 22, 2013

My main reason for going to m4/3 is the weight issue as I do a lot of trekking, climbing and hiking photography. This lens is just so small and light it still take me back some days. It can literally fit in your pocket. on top of this the performance and sharpness is fantastic! Build quality feels great and autofocus very fast. I am not a fan of the lens hood that tightens with a thumb screw, which you have to pay extra for... Otherwise I give it my thumbs up.

Disappointing

May 14, 2014

I wanted to love this lens. I own the 45mm Olympus and it's truly amazing. This lens has a better build quality, and a great focusing ring that adds to its appeal. However, the image quality was disappointing. Not nearly up to the quality of the 45mm, or the Panasonic 20mm I also use. Great looking, well built, but I can not recommend this lens due to its lack of sharpness and inability to resolve detail. I give it two stars for the great design and build.

What else do you require ?

Aug 1, 2011

I've had this lens for only a week but have discovered that the images it produces with Oly EP2 are as beautiful as the lens itself . I really do believe the beauty of the tool itself has much to do with the quality of work you produce, you will reach for this lens just because you must . No negatives but the cost . I've taken shots in a Art gallery hand held and the results are very good . Also, for 360 degr photo knitting 12 mm is close to perfect .

Awesome in Low Light

Aug 10, 2011

I sued this with my Panasonic GF! and GH1. They work great. When I used the video on the GH1 using this 12mm lens and used the GF1 with the 14-45mm lens, the difference is astonishing. The 12mm lens was just astonishingly clear while the 14-45 was dark and noisy. It is also fast and does the job as expected, specially in lowlight. I just can't figure the zone focusing though. it did not matter. it focuses fast enough for me already.

Poor image, sadly disappointed in this lens

Dec 8, 2017

I unfortunately must agree with those that reported poor image results this lens produces. While build quality of the lens is excellent the lack of sharpness, but most importantly heavy fringing effect has been a show stopper. I own the Olympus 45mm lens too which produces MAGNIFICENT image! I wish this one came even halfway there. I'll be getting rid of this one just as soon as I find an alternative.

great lens

Jan 17, 2012

By both feel and action this lens is a beauty. Solidly built, smooth in action and delivers crystal clear images that push 11 x 14 without problems (used on p3). Aside from being rather pricey, and the need to buy the lens hood (can only guess why), The lens is a great addition and brings me back to the great single focal length lens days of Leica. A must lens for anyone seriously using this system.

Lovely lens

Feb 6, 2014

Lovely lens with snappy and quiet auto focus. Attached to my E-P 3. I have the E-P 2 as well and just purchased the E-P 5 with 17 mm lens and viewfinder. Quite pleased with the overall Olympus Micro Four Thirds E-P system. The camera fits my small hands, is light weight and of durable construction and lastly the image quality is quite good. Next purchase, a pro level zoom lens.

Great Lens for a Novice

Sep 24, 2014

I use this lens for the BMPCC and I'm very glad I chose it. It's a great all-around lens with a respectable max aperture and a wide angle with little fish-eye. At the moment, this is the only lens I have that works with the BMPCC, but I've actually found that it does a great job in almost every scenario - with the exception of interviews where a very shallow DoF is needed.

M. Zuiko Digital ED 12 mm

Aug 29, 2011

I will use this lens to shoot interiors, some street work and my art. It works great on my Panasonic cameras. I tested Panasonic's 7-14 and found it didn't equal their cheapo kit lens. This Oly appears to be as sharp as my Leica DG 45. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with a lens shade. Thanks for the gouge Olympus. Only $100 for the shade? i'll make my own.

Great on the DJI X5

Feb 9, 2016

Got this for the express purpose of flying it on the Inspire 1's X5 gimbal/camera. The autofocus is solid and quick and the DJI Go app controls aperture as well as any handheld camera. One note though, it took a bit of digging to figure out that the focus ring itself is the MF/AF selector. Slide it away from the sensor for AF and closer to the sensor for MF.

Excellent, but use aperture priority.

Aug 8, 2011

I love this lens, the quality, the depth of field markings, the manual focus capability, it is what I have been looking for. Normally I use program mode, but with this lens I need to adjust the aperture to get control of the depth of field. I hope Olympus makes other lenses like this. I use it both on my EPL-2 and the G3. What I have been looking for.

Classic Wide Angle Lens

Jun 26, 2017

The image quality of this lens is excellent, with both great resolution and contrast. The solid metal construction and fine finish is what I expect in pro-level glass. The quality of the Olympus 12mm f/2.0 lens and beautiful appearance of the images reminds me of my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. This lens is a classic too, and I hope to use it often.

A Must Buy

Feb 8, 2013

Excellent center sharpness with just a hint of corner softness wide open. The corner softness goes away completely by F4.0. Some CA and shading which go away when you stop down and in any case can be fixed in post processing. The snap focus feature is unique and very functional. If you need wide angle and a fast aperature this is a must buy!

Great lens for my X5 OSMO.

Jul 25, 2018

I purchased this lens to use with my X5 Osmo Pro. Lens is sharp and feels durable. It gave me the extra field of view I needed compared to the stock DJI lens. I'm happy with the purchase, but was bummed to find out that a lens hood is not included. You have to purchase the hood separately. For the price I paid it should be included.

at this price point you expect better

Jun 25, 2013

I was going to use this lens along with the pano 25mm1.4, and the Oly 45mm 1.8 with 3 bodies in a single bag but the optical performance of the 12 mm is sub par compared to the other lenses. sometimes you get what you pay for and other times (as in this case) you don't. this just isn't in the same league with the other primes I own.

Great lens for GH4 film makers

Jun 29, 2015

I needed a fast wide angle for shooting film on the GH4. the lens is super sharp , light and made impeccably. The focus works super fast and is silent which is a great benefit if you are shooting film. This is a great lens albeit the very expensive price for someone making an entrance into film / video production.

Sep 14, 2011

I use this lens for candid street photography. It is fast, sharp, fun, and easy to work with. It is amazing in low light and delivers true quality pictures. Olympus has done a nice job with this lens. It is pricey but definitely worth it. I can't wait until the 45 F 1.8 M. Zuiko lens becomes available.

Jan 11, 2012

purchased with camera on recommendations from site. Like the idea of manual control. Don't like having to purchase lens hood separately for a fair amount of money to get genuine Olympus hood. Also no lens case or pouch- all those should come with a lens that costs almost as much as the camera (EP-3)

This is my second lens for my Olympus OM-D E-M1 after the 75-300 mm Zoom. With a 35mm equivalent of 24 meters this works as a medium wide prime lens. I have gotten fantastic landscape shots with this lens with good color. This lens lets in plenty of light and works great for outdoor photography.

This is a well made lens that works well on my Panasonic GF1. I enjoy the compact structure, sharp results and fast AF. Manual focusing is also very smooth and responsive. I'm a little disappointed that Olympus skimped out on a lens bag and hood. I'd expect that from a lens in this price range.

Fast, sharp , contrasty and a proper focus scale. I was all for giving up on micro 43 before this was released - I like wides and primes. A little CA in the corners. Nice that it's metal - but it's light and not it the same league as the solid brass-aluminium Leica,Zeiss and Voigtlnder lenses.
