Not excellent, but not at all mediocre.

Apr 11, 2016

For a long time, I had put off purchasing the Sony FE 24-70 f/4 OSS lens owing to the generally bad reviews posted by DxOMark, Photozone.De, SLRGear and the like. But when my local big box electronics store came up with an open box markdown this lens at a considerable savings 25%, I was enticed to purchase it, thinking, despite the negative reports, I could use it as a travel lens on my A7ii, saving my primes for my A7Rii. I was presently surpris... Show More

Renewed faith

Mar 14, 2014

Knowing that a zoom is not as precise (sharpness/contrast) as a prime lens, and recognizing the multitude of conflicting reviews on the internet, I decided to purchase it in the hope - that as a travel lens - it would satisfy my needs across its focal range. I have been in use of my Canon 5D3 with the 24-105 f/4 lens which I have been quite pleased with so this was of course, the standard to which I made a comparison. First I did some single test... The Zen of Lenses

Apr 14, 2016

I recently got this lens from B&H after reading many reviews of it. I needed an FE lens for my a7Rii and was attracted to it by the Zeiss badge and zoom length. Now we all know that all lenses and all cameras have their limitations, right? And we all know that you can pixel-peek and read technical reports on DxOMark and elsewhere. And we all know that you can turn off lens corrections in-camera in in Lightroom to witness native lens aberrations, ... Show More

Incredible Lens. Versatile, sturdy, rock solid all around!

Oct 3, 2017

I got this lens along with an Sony A7R II. This is the first professional DSLR that I've owned. My background is in motion pictures, but my new job asked me to be their staff photographer, covering school events. This lens has proven to be an amazing workhorse for me in this scenario. The constant aperture allows me to shoot using manual settings with confidence without needing to make adjustments when altering the focal length. I find that I am ... Show More

Sony FE 24-70mm Vs Canon EF-S 15-85mm

Mar 1, 2014

I tested this lens on the Sony A7r. It is soft at 24 and 35mm starting at 60% of the way out towards the edge. I compared it to my current system, the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f4-5.6 IS on Canon Rebel 550D. I photographed a brick wall at a variety of focal lengths and f-stops, I'll only go into detail on one set, take at 24mm f8 on the Sony, and the equivalent focal length on the cropped sensor of 15mm f8. Both sets were taken at ISO 200 and 1/250. The... Show More

For the price, its a great lens

May 14, 2019

I primarily use this lens on my Sony A7S for event photography. I like the 24-70 focal length as the preferred focal length for reportage-style photography. Most of the time my shots are at the 24mm end of the lens. I will sometimes zoom in to catch a speaker at a podium. Build quality is very good and matches the build quality of the A7 camera series (which is to say the build quality is high). The lens is made from a thin (aluminum?) material... Show More

Id give it 4.5 starts if I could

Apr 9, 2019

Im a serious amateur photographer and have had this lens for a year or so. What I like about this lens is that its small, light, has a very useful focal range, and f/4 constant aperture through the zoom range. The built quality is very good. The price of the lens is half or less of pro F/2.8 versions produced by Sony, Nikon, Canon etc. In terms of image quality, I pretty much make do with it. The lens is reasonably sharp with good contrast, but... Show More

Decent at Times....but Inconsistent

Oct 6, 2014

I had high expectations for this lens as a primary travel/walkaround lens on the A7s. While it's met some of these expectations my results have been inconsistent enough to warrant concerns. Physically it's small and light and is very pleasant to use. Optically it appears worst at 24 and again out at 70, with it's sweet spot around about 35-50mm or so. It usually appears to have pretty soft corners, which may or may not bother a user depending on ... Show More

Very good, but slightly expensive.

Mar 12, 2014

I have had the lens for almost two weeks. One full day shooting and a couple other smaller outings. I have taken maybe 500 images in that time. I am using it on an A7R. The lens is sharp, especially in the mid-range. The reviews I read said the lens is soft in the corners at 24mm. I didn't especially notice this in normal shooting. However, it is noticeably softer at 70mm. CA seams well controlled. Very few of the images I took are at F4, however... Show More

Disappointed

Dec 11, 2017

I saw many 4 star reviews on this lens both here and elsewhere and thought it was a "great" lens for the money. I believe I've been spoiled by Canon lenses. There are geometric distortions on the edges and appears more the upper right side. In some cases, it can be corrected somewhat in Adobe but it would need to be seen before applying as it is not universal throughout all focal lengths. With that, I would need to spend extra time in post to cor... Show More

Poor Optics Cant Use OSS on A7r

Jun 18, 2014

The Image Quality of the lens is mediocre at best due to choice to use the inexpensive Tessar design rather than the much better, more expensive Sonnar design. Compared to the top-of-the-line Canon 24-70 F4 L VR mounted with a Metavbones III adapter on a A7r, the Zeiss performs poorly: corners at about 35-70mm focal length are soft whereas the Canon are tact sharp. AND there is a large distortion at 24 & 70mm. But the worst design feature is the ... Show More

Solid

Oct 22, 2014

I bought this lens mainly for my A7S, for shooting video. It does not deliver the same insane standard of image quality as the FE 55mm on a A7R. For photos, the FE 24-70mm is very capable on A7S 12mp sensor, flawless for HD video. The lenses shortcomings are visible in the edges on the A7R, slightly soft. When I first got the A7S, I mostly used it with a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 (via Metabones FE to EF lens adapter). The results were very pleasant, bu... Show More

Great Lens, does just what I want with great results

Sep 20, 2018

I was a little skeptical to buy this lens due to reviews, especially for never trying it before. I needed this focal range, so I had wide angles and a 70-200 f2.8 already. The sharpness is killer, exceeds my expectations. The coloring is nice, much better than cheaper zooms. The autofocus is quick and precise, although I do recommend fine tuning, or at least checking to see how accurate it is. Mine was focusing a hair in front of the subject, not... Show More

Good, but not great.

Nov 16, 2014

This is the ideal walk-around lens for an E-mount Sony full-frame camera. I'm using it with my a7R, and I'm very happy with its light weight, small size and terrific resolution -- at least at the center. But as you move outwards, that crispness falls off. Okay, I'm comparing it to its big brother, the A-mount Vario-Sonnar 24-70mm f2.8, a stunning workhorse of a lens that maintains sharp resolution almost to the edges. I was planning to sell mine,... Superb Zeiss Colors and Solid OSS

Mar 23, 2014

I bought this lens as an all-purpose walk-around kit to use with the Sony A7. It has not disappointed. The colors are typical Zeiss - saturated and rich. The optical stabilization is amazing - I can get sharp pictures hand-held 1/15 sec at 60MM. If you looking for a lens that is sharp at all apertures and all focal lengths this is not it. For a perfect performance get the Leica 28-90 at about $7K. Cons: 24MM is a bit weak and 70MM gets a tad less... Show More

Sony a7R's First Dedicated Zoom Lens

First off, this is an outstanding lens. Could it be better? Yes, but it is good enough for 90% of the work I do. I shoot a lot of landscapes and the wide to mid zoom is good most of the time. I wish it was like my Canon 24-105 since that covers more of what I shoot. I waited a long time for this lens and I'm not disappointed. I do wish it was a little faster than f/4 but then I probably couldn't have afforded it so I won't complain about that eit... Show More

I purchased this lens a short time ago for use on my A7II and am thoroughly pleased with it. Yes, it is pricey. Yes, it is not lightweight (but that is the trade off for a constant aperture and reasonable speed). But as an everyday walk-around lens it will suit the needs of 99% of all of us. Most of the negative reviews, I am convinced, are coming from those who are sitting at their computers with a loupe looking at the corners. Generally, the ou... Show More

My Desert Island Lens For My FS7

I don't think that this lens produces quite the images that, say, my sigma lenses do in this range. That said, if I was on a desert island and could only bring one lens, I think this would be the lens I'd select. Why? Because it's the most versatile. It covers pretty much all the most useful focal lengths. You can do fairly-wide establishing shots and get it close for closeup. The lens has auto-focus and stabilization, making it great for handhel... Show More

Mediocre for the price

May 14, 2015

I've had this lens since it was released and use it on an A7r. The colors are nice and rich, the OSS efficient, and it's a decent size. But there are huge downsides. Loads of distortion on the wide end, soft on the long end, and messy edges. Yes, you can correct the distortion, but then you lose a lot of the frame, which defeats the point of 24mm. It's terrible for landscapes, which is what I usually shoot these days, but decent for a general tra... Show More

Auto Focus when shooting video is butter-smooth. Acts like video AF should. It's quite remarkable. On the other hand, the manual focus ring is very hard to predict and feels numb to the touch. I haven't used AF for video in years, so the MF behavior I find to be very frustrating. That said, the AF is good enough to actually be useful, and it's a very nicely made, compact, high-quality zoom with very good OSS. In photo mode, it seems to nail focus... Show More
