Slowest AF Possible

Oct 20, 2018

Don't get me wrong, this is an exceptional lens for the price. Great, sharp photos with acceptable trade-offs in most areas, but the AF is the slowest hunting creature I've ever seen. You may have heard people say that to get the shot you need to have your lens cover off, camera on, and always be ready. Unfortunately, with this lens you need to have the camera at your eye and focus held and hope the action crosses your already established... Show More

Great for the pricepoint

Oct 16, 2018

Its a great lens for what you pay...yes its lightweight and mostly plastic but for everyday use where you arent in a rugged environment it will hold up just fine. I didnt have any issues with it hunting focus (im on v3 of the lens) and got very sharp photos from it at f2.8. Also the autofocus motors will be in your audio recording if only using on camera mics but that didn't hurt my production in any way, just something to note. Overall i would recommend!

Excellent choice With great customer services

Sep 19, 2018

I recently bought this lens and so far it has been a great choice of lens I made so far. The customer service is also up is excellent, however I was a little more of a can do better, I am not saying its a bad service, very excellent but I wish that I can purchase everything from B&H like my Moza Aircross cannot be shipped due to lithium battery restrictions. I hope my reviews are well within required. But at the of the day I am grateful.

Disappointing

Sep 18, 2018

Very good sharpness in the centre wide open. That is the ONLY positive of this entry level lens. Loud slow AF. No AF/M switches. No distance/DOF markings. Bizarre searching on my a7rII. Simply the worst lens I can imagine even for the admittedly low price.

It's a good lens

Sep 16, 2018

I'm not overly thrilled to be honest and just on the fence on keeping it. I use my A7iii mostly for product shots and with quite a bit of comparison today between this and the kit lens, as well as the Zeiss 2.8/35mm and 70 to 200 2.8 G, this is just ok. Yes it works, you get a nice bokeh from the 1.8, but when comparing just the kit 28 to 70 to it at F4.5 the results were nearly identical. I'd give this one about 5% more detail than the kit when ... Disapointing

Sep 12, 2018

Lots of reviewers stated that the lens hunts and hunts before eventually finding focus. Despite this, I bought the lens as it was on special at $200. Yes, it hunts for ever. And it is far from the sharpest lens I own. As they say, you get what you pay for.

Decent lens at a decent price

Using it on my A7III. It does AF hunt a little and the AF motor is a bit noisy. The picture quality is excellent overall though. For the price it is actually worth it.

It's not easy to use. It only has a fixed lens so it's hard to get the subject in the photo.

Bang for the buck!!!

Aug 28, 2018

This lens has exceeded my expectations! The images are super sharp throughout, and the bokeh rendering is beautiful. I cannot believe that Sony was able to create such a great lens that we are lucky enough to grab for $200. If you were looking for a 50 and you have a couple hundred dollars, I could not recommend this lens enough!

Latest Firmware & A7III...Focuses OK

Aug 27, 2018

For $200 this lens is really great. The focus is OK...In good light it's quick-ish and accurate. The colors, contrast, and bokeh are pretty nice. It's 1/3 the cost of your next cheapest 50mm, and 800 cheaper than the zeiss 55. Expectations should be in line with the price of the lens, and to me it's really serviceable. If you're in low light or trying to focus on something generally plain or flat and the same color, it hunts. I wish it was better, and I can't help but wonder if I should bite the bullet and order the 55, but I really enjoy this lens for what it is.

Decent lens for price but lens no longer recognized by camer

Aug 13, 2018

This lens was a good lens for me to start with as a nifty fifty lens. Images came out sharp and crisp. However, there are several issues. The autofocus is the noisiest and slowest native Sony lens I own. You can really hear the whirring when the lens is finding focus. Now that I've used this lens for a good 6 months, it no longer is recognized by my Sony a7rii. I cannot change aperture size nor focus with the lens. Also tested it on my a6000 and could not connect either. Disappointed with this lens. For $200 I hoped this lens would at least last 2 years.

Auto focus is extremely slow and unreliable. I am extremely disappointed, but then again it was cheap. But I wish I hadnt bought it. The moment is gone by the time the lens focuses.

Plastic Fantastic?

Jul 31, 2018

Sony should make a better more solid feeling lens in my opinion. Really this lens feels like a cheap plastic one. Yes it takes pictures just fine but worried about it's longevity and holding up with general use. Should have been half the price really.

No less than I expected

Getting back into photography after many years. A quality prime lense is critical. Sony glass does it right. This fast lense is crystal clear and on the A7ii Sony body it's a perfect way to get back in the game.

Not Perfect but good enough!

Jun 15, 2018

It is light! It is cheap! It is F1.8! Whit the help of A7M3 focusing system it can even catch a bird! Also it has a lot of problems. 1,Always use AF-C, when you use AF-S the focusing speed is terrible. Some time it just cannot focus. 2,You have to manual deferring in Lr, or it will be a disaster. 3,The sharpness is not so good as 55 ZA, very easy to find out different in 100%.

Not as bad as you would think at this price range

May 31, 2018

OK, this is a cheap lens price wise but for $200, GET IT! I've used it on a6300 and a7iii. (even FS7's I have) Wide open, corners are a little off but 5.6- 5.8 corners are very sharp. AF is a little bit noisy and not awesome fast but...It's $200 and well worth that price. For the average fun shooter this is a no brainer and should be in your bag.

Useful lens for many of us

May 15, 2018

I am an amateur photographer. I have read the reviews that denigrate this lens. I tried it anyway for use on A6300 and A7II and found it helpful. From my perspective this is a useful lens at a bargain price. I am pleased with the lens. This lens is thus not a limiting factor for my photography.

Great under f10

May 13, 2018

Great under f10 with adequate light with continues auto focus and expandable flexible spot focusing. Very little issues with this lens at f1.8. The f1.8 in this lens is for Bokeh, not low light. For low light get the sony 85mm f1.8. Love this focal length though and the build quality is great -- it makes the lens nice and light and cheap. Plus the bezel of the front element is metal. It's metal where it matters. No brainer to put this in your bag... Show More

Manual Focus Only

May 10, 2018

Honestly, this lens is twice as expensive as Canon 1.8 and no better. It's got a lousy and loud autofocus system. I'd have no problem with this lens if I was using it only for video - and manually focusing - because the focus ring is pretty nice - especially compared to the Canon...

Good Quality, Rough AF

May 9, 2018

I was really pleased with the pictures that came from this lens. Build quality is so so .I ended up returning it though, mainly due to the autofocus. It's really slow and guessy as it gets focus. There were a few times where I had to awkwardly tell my subject "just a second". I don't think it's a deal breaker for everyone though, just a personal thing. If it had manual and af I would consider keeping it to use for film. Wouldn't attempt to use AF with video because it is particularly noisy as well. Again - if af isn't a deal breaker for you, it's a nice piece of glass and takes lovely images.

great optical quality for the price

May 8, 2018

I had a chance to compare this side-by-side w/the 55mm f1.8 zeiss on the same A7iii camera. If you are a still shooter, there's pretty much no real-world difference in optical quality. AF is noisy and maybe not quite as fast as the zeiss, but it's definitely plenty fast for most use cases in all but the lowest of light. With lock-on AF or eye-AF, I had no issues w/tracking a quickly moving subject. If you're a video shooter, you may want to stay away because of the noisy AF.

One major drawback, otherwise a decent do-it-all lens.

May 5, 2018

The one major issue with this lens is super slow and noisy autofocusing. It feels like 1980s AF technology. Even the 28-70mm kit lens focuses better and quieter than this lens. With that said, if you can get over the noisy and slow AF, this lens will produce amazing images for you. The bokeh is decent and the F1.8 aperture works great in low light situations. It's great for portraits (of non fast moving subjects) Eye-AF works on this lens but is otherwise slow to find the eye or the face and hunts sometimes.
