Slow auto focus on A7II makes it almost unusable
I wanted a somewhat compact, fast 50mm for everyday use. The auto focus of this lens on the A7II is so slow, I miss most photographic opportunities. I wouldn't recommend this lens to anyone.

Really Good Lens
IF you are using an A7III and the lens is on firmware version 3 it works great! It's plenty fast focusing. There is a slight noise but it's not bad. The lens is plenty sharp. I've done a little testing in low light with focusing and it's good. I'm sure the Zeiss 55 is somewhat better but this lens is cheap and small and light and it works well. It's absolutely worth having in your kit..

Much better than expected.
...yes this lens does hunt at times, but not that often if focusing over an area of contrast and when it nails it the resulting file is sharp and lovely even wide open, on my a7ll.

Great product
This came quickly and performs well. It is a Sharpe lens. An excellent deal for the money.

Really good lens
Love this lens. Only problem I found was single focus it hunts alittle but then it works. If you keep it in AF-C it works far better. Images quality is really good it's nice and sharp

Perfect Starter Prime
Bought this after returning my Sony 50mm f1.4, this lens while not the same performs just as well for what I need and makes it far easier to balance on a gimbal. I honestly dont think this lens is 1/7 the quality of the 1.4 which the which is 1/7, but that is just my opinion. If you need a 50mm to get started with the Sony Alpha system, this is a solid lens at a great price point.

good but...
It leaves a lot to be desired, I have rokinon and samyang lenses and I think they have better clarity.

Love this lens
Very easy to operate and control the lens. Still learning to take full advantage but so far very pleased with the results.

Great lens for the price
Photography is my hobby and there is lot to learn. Having this light weight and easy to control lens, makes my learning process easier. So far I have used this lens to cover sweet 16th birthday party and photographs of the birthday girl and other portraits with lights in the background came out amazing. I also used Sony flash with this lens for some very low light photos. So far my comfortable with this lens. It is bit noisy while trying to focus but for this price and Aperture, who cares.

Nice little lens
I am very happy with this lens, particularly at its price point. Way lighter than the f4.0 24-105 zoom lens that the camera used to wear. The zoom lens might be sharper - I have not made comparisons - but this lens is perfectly satisfactory (and it is faster).

Cheapest 50mm 1.8 FE lens
Built quality is ok for its price. B&H even bundled it with a free Hoya filter (TKS). Only comes with a focusing ring. No image stabilizing feature. Focusing is slightly noisy but still acceptable. Bokeh is quite good. Focusing is slightly slow but ok in most situations.

Great Glass, Bad Auto Focus.
I use this lense with a Sony a7r, and the Automatic focus is very noisy and technically unuseable. You can use it in Manual Mode, or Direct Manual Mode, and it works alright; but Automatic Focus does not give you the crisp, perfect image that its supposed to.

It was just what I wanted
This lens takes really sharp pics and even in low light. It produced the bokeh I was hoping for. Great lens and price.

Smaller than I thought
At first I thought I got a bad one. I would take my pictures, get home, load those suckers onto the computer, then see that some of the images were not as sharp as I was hoping for. But, the more I use this lens, the more Im starting to see the sharpness. So with that and the price of this lens, I can not complain.

Very good for the price.
Inexpensive and optically very good. Typical low end construction but not bad. Slow focusing for a modern lens but Ive seen worse. Dark day, f/4. Converted in post.

So light!
So my mistake in not noticing that it doesnt have built in OSS but hey, thats on me :-) Otherwise, this is a great little lens. Makes a huge difference using a full frame lens on a full frame camera!

The most underrated lens for Sony
This lens had a bad reputation because of the firmware when it first came out. Right now with firmware 3 theres absolutely no issues. The bocce you get from it and the overall image quality is insane! Specially when taking into account how cheap it sells for. If you want a prime lens in the 50 to 55mm range you have to buy this lens!

Dont Believe The Negative Hype
The autofocus works fine with the A7III, it really does. Ive been using this lens for about a month, on several paid shoots and I havent missed a single shot because of the focusing. The bokeh is lovely, the skin tones are beautiful, and the handling is great. Its a nearly flawless lens for everything except pixel peeping. Im well aware that there are better lenses, but Ive been pleasantly surprised every time I pick up this lens to shoot.

Unusable in lower light - constant focus hunting
If youre in bright light, its a perfectly fine lens. Fairly quick focus, nice sharp image. If youre in a situation that requires anything above 1600 ISO, it becomes useless. Endless, slow, noisy hunting that rarely finds the spot. I have to either switch to manual focus or, in most cases, just put on another lens. Very disappointing.

Bang for the buck!
Snapped it on my new FS5mkii and used it for the first time on a two day C-level executive interview shoot. It had pretty good bokeh considering it only has seven blades. It is so lightweight its a bit frightening. I dont rent my gear out so I can live with it, but it makes the camera awful back heavy. What I really enjoyed was using it with Clear Image zoom. The only problem was with the shipping. See the photo - seriously thats how it was packed. Tough lens!!!

Quality lens for a solid price!
So far have really enjoyed using this lens. I fully believe in the idea you get what you pay for. While its $248 which is very low compared to most Sony E mount lenses it gets the job done and takes some solid photos and works well enough for video for the price you pay. It has some AF noise especially as it by default it continuously focuses on all cameras Ive used it with so far even in one shot AF modes with the half press. Its not a G Master ... Show More

Horribly noisy and slow
This really worth $50 no more, I cannot comprehend why would anyone produce such mechanically poor lens in modern times.

What autofocus issues?
I think the bad autofocus reviews reallyexaggerate. Using eye AF on A7RIII the focus is spot on almost in all shots, and theres almost no hunting. Stopping down the lens a little improves IQ significantly. Im super happy with the results I got mainly from shooting at F2-F2.8.
