Excellent Macro Lens

Jan 5, 2018

A pleasure to shoot with. Great for macro work - flowers, eyeballs and bugs YES! Also a great portrait lens - you can capture some great shots with excellent bokeh. The lens is Leica branded for a reason. Very sharp.

Super nice and worth the extra expense

Nov 15, 2017

So far I've used this lens only a few times. For close up shots it's great and I've even tried it as a short telephoto for portraits and landscapes. It's quite sharp and the IS feature has come in handy. I don't regret adding this to my bag.

A fine macro lens for micro 4/3

May 12, 2017

Very good for both macro and scenic photography. Not at its optical best at f/2.8 and diffraction is obvious at f/16+ but otherwise excellent.

Great Optics

Mar 9, 2017

Evaluating this lens with the Olympus E-M1 Mark II. Excellent lens optics and sharp images. Construction: The lens is extremely light in weight, auto focus is very slow (user guide states that focusing takes time) with the Olympus Pro Lenses the focusing is instantaneous. In manual mode the focusing is OK but not as silky smooth as the Olympus Pro Lenses. The feel of the lens and construction is also not up to par with Olympus Pro Lenses. Purchas... Show More

Lovely Lens

Oct 26, 2016

This is not a technical review, but more an everyday use description of a fun lens to own. I've used this lens several times now that the weather is cooler. This lens brings a whole new perspective to my photography in that I'm now looking for the smallest of details. I've discovered a new world with incredible minute details. Super quality lens and the ability to live focus (in manual) with you finger half-pressed on the shutter release. This en... Show More

Great Macro Lens

Sep 13, 2016

I have used this lens to take macro infraRed photos on my converted Panasonic GF1. I have also used it to take macro photos with my new Olympus OMD EM1. The images are tack sharp.

Superb!

Jul 5, 2016

I have used this lens for a couple dozen macro shots of flowers and they are as good as those I've done with a much more expensive lens on a FF DSLR camera! It's a little expensive but worth every cent. It's a very high quality prime lens that almost guarantees tack-sharp photos. I recommend it without hesitation or reservation.

Best lens ever!

May 26, 2015

I rarely write a review but I am so delighted with this lens - I couldn't resist. It is so versatile I've almost given up on my other ones. You can get great macro close ups and good distant shots. I'm still figuring out all its capabilities but even for a beginner this is the best lens ever!

Fantastic lens

Mar 8, 2015

This lens is absolutelly marvellous. It is razor sharp from f2.8 to f7.1 (the sweet spot is f4-5.6), very usable to f16-18 and, if you need super sharp images you should avoid f20-22. Comparing to Olympus 60mm, that I also own, this lens is significantly sharper and holds it's sharpness better for a wider apperture range. The Olympus is also a very good lens and produces fantastic images, but there is something about this Panasonic that gives tha... Show More

Solid macro lens when used with GH4

Aug 12, 2014

Use this as go to macro on the GH4. Fairly solid build and decent in low light. There may be better more solidly built lenses out there, but focus is critical in macro, so I like that with the GH4, autofocus works, as does the built in stabilizer.

Bought this lens for macro photography with my E-M1 camera. It is extremely sharp, focuses smoothly. Traded in a Olympus 60 Macro for this lens. Very happy I did.

Awesome!

Apr 16, 2013

I love the sharpness and lovely rendering this lens produces. With the Olympus OM-D EM-5 the focus speed is just fine. I found that the key to fast focus with my combo is to select the right size focus box for my subject matter.

Great macro lens

Apr 6, 2013

As you might expect, a lens made by Leica is not cheapeither in price or quality. This 45 mm (90 mm equivalent of standard DSLR's) macro lens is micro 4/3 technology used by Olympus, Kodak, and Panasonic in mirrorless cameras. With an adapter it could also be used on 4/3 cameras made by Nikon and Canon. I have used it solely with the Panasonic GH3. The FOCUS slide switch should be set to FULL for macro work or LIMIT for distance use such as lands... Show More

Perfect M43 Macro and Portrait Glass,

Jan 22, 2013

This was the first lens I bought for my GH2 with the 14-140 kit lens. Initially bought for macro use and it is tack sharp. I shot some newly hatched rare fish fry for a friend's aquarium blog. I was amazed at how sharp the images of the 2mm transparent fish were. I was able to crop and enlarge with my only limitation being the pixel size of my camera sensor. For macro I prefer manual focus or if on a tripod with a still life I like Lumix camera's... Show More

Nice Medium Telephoto Lens

Jul 21, 2012

I bought this for my GH2 because I like the 50mm f1.8 on my NEX 5N. They both perform similarly on their respective camera bodies. The NEX/50mm combo is still the better stills camera... similar sharpness but much better low light performance... faster lens with a faster sensor. Both produce exceptional bokeh and similar shallow depth of field if desired. The stabilised macro on the Lumis is a very welcome bonus. The situation is reversed in vide... Show More

Good macro lens for GH-2

May 30, 2012

I bought this lens for macro use (wildflowers,...), have used it for the past 2 months, and am pleased with it: good acuity, good contrast, good bokeh, no discernable backlash with manual focussing.

Quality lens, very expensive

May 10, 2012

Macro and portrait photography are the key strengths of this lens. Field work created a bit of a problem by having to constantly be stepping back to frame the image properly. Macro images offered extremely shallow depth of field and sharp crisp images. Portrait work provided sharp focus and great clarity. Depth of field issues can occur if not focused manually and utilizing a proper f-stop. Portraits at 8-feet with an f-stop of 5.6 with the subject 4-feet from the nearest backdrop will provide a clean portrait with diffused background.

Fine Macro and Mild Telephoto Lens

Apr 18, 2012

The lens works beautifully. It takes sharp macro and mild telephoto pictures. It focuses quickly, but you can defocus the background. The O.I.S. is particularly helpful for this focal length lens. This lens and all of the Leica lenses for Panasonic have exceptionally rich, beautiful color rendition. This may be due to the modern coatings and the aspherical lenses incorporated into their designs.
