This lens is worth every penny

Sep 11, 2014

This lens is sharp at all f-stops, it's fast throughout the zoom range and it's very well made. I really like the way you can put it in MF/AF by sliding the focus ring back and forth. Even the lens shade is easy to put on and take off. It's weather resistant and that's my only beef with it. The o-ring at the lens mount makes it a minor struggle to twist the lens on/off. There's no good place to grab the lens to do that. Focus is fast and silent.

Amazing quality

Sep 2, 2014

This is my first MFT lens for the Panasonic GH4, and fits all my needs for video making. I appreciate the overall quality, metal everywhere, secured cap, and great image quality as well.

Great all around lens

Aug 21, 2014

This lens is fantastic on the EM-1. Purchased it as my starting MFT lens, and it has not let me down. A PRO quality lens in every sense. Compact, light weight, super sharp, bright, and fast with minimal distortion. Weatherproof and excellent built. Great for photographing on the streets and in the studio. A must have on your bag.

Great value in a versatile lens

Aug 14, 2014

I used the lens with a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera to shoot documentary style footage mainly indoors. I found the zoom range to be idea for this kind of work. The build quality is excellent. The focus holds well throughout the zoom range. When the lens is fully open and zoomed out, the bokeh is decent. Not as dramatic as I've come to enjoy with the EF L glass we've shot on.

Fantastic Lens with a 35mm Feel

Aug 11, 2014

Fantastic! The range is better than Panasonic's 12-35 and with the Manual setting, gives less focal breathing when shooting video as you zoom in/out. The price point is similar and the images are great. The construction is solid with many metal parts. At f2.8, this lens has replaced a handful of primes that I aways kept in my bag.

A fantastic lens that's worth the price

Aug 5, 2014

After doing several jobs where I was constantly changing primes, I decided to purchase this lens. The focal length covers the range that I typically need, and although it doesn't have stabilization like the comparable Lumix lens, it still provides excellent results. The 12-40mm f/2.8 is now my go to lens and hasn't been off my GH3 since the day it arrived.

Pricey, but so... worth it

Aug 4, 2014

I use this lens while kayaking, hiking, anywhere. Even in inclement weather. That's the beauty of the Olympus 4/3s and this lens which are water resistant. Not that I anticipate dropping it overboard, but I don't have to stop shooting if rain rolls in.

A true Pro zoom

Aug 3, 2014

I am not a fan of consumer zooms, they start out slow and end even slower, the image quality is rarely equal to prime lenses and most of them feel cheaply made. But the 12-40mm f2.8 is a true pro lens at a very affordable price. It is sharp and reasonably fast, at a constant F2.8, across its entire range. The image quality is right up there with the Olympus primes. It has an extra assignable function button built right in the lens and the same ma... Show More

A Must Have Lens

Aug 3, 2014

I purchased the M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens along with the OM-D E-M1 from B&H a while back to replace/update from my Nikon D80. At the time of my purchase, the OM-D E-M1 does not come with a kit lens. I decided on this lens because I think it's a most flexible and quality lens to begin the switch from DSLR to mirrorless. After shooting with it for a while, I am extremely happy with the decision. The Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is the e... Show More

If you could own only one m4/3 lens...

Jul 29, 2014

...it should be this one. It is a Pro-Level lens in every respect. All the superlatives that have been heaped upon this lens are spot-on: macro capabilities, landscape, portraits, weather resistance, relative size, etc. I use this on an EM5 without a grip and it is very comfortable. Fit and finish are flawless, zoom ring is firm and sure, autofocus is extremely fast and quiet (but not as fast as my 17mm f/1.8: that lens is ridiculously fast). Bok... Show More

Superb lens - well worth the price.

Jul 28, 2014

Bought this lens for my OMD-EM10 after reading the other reviews. Simply stunning results and the build quality is the best I have ever seen. Bought the OMD-EM10 for a smaller/lighter camera as compared to my Pentax K3. Love the Pentax but the Oly is the camera I'm starting to carry more often.

Fantastic Lens, but big for the format

Jul 28, 2014

I use this for outdoor photography and around my house with kids and animals. the ability to do shoot scenery at the wide end, macro, and portrait range means this thing is glued to my camera. Fantastic depth of field, color rendering, and the ability to switch from auto to manual focus with the focus ring is great. The sacrifice is size. Nothing compared to the same range on a dslr type lens but still big for m4/3.

Jul 27, 2014

This is one of the sharpest lenses from the Zuiko family. I use the 12-60 on my E-5, but this one is even sharper then the 12-60, and sits on my EM1 most of the time. Superb lens.

Great lens, built like a tank!

Jul 23, 2014

Other reviews can tell you all you need to know, it's a great lens. Just wanted to add that I have (involuntarily) given this lens a quite rough treatment, and it just survives anything. Treatment includes a solid saltwater shower, followed by a freshwater shower to remove the salt, and I once threw it hard into a rock. The lens didn't seem affected by this at all. Even though I would recommend you to treat it nicer than me, it is evident that this lens is designed to tackle hard use.

I purchased this as an upgrade to the Olympus 12-50mm kit lens that came with my OM-D E-M5. While I felt the 12-50mm was already under appreciated, this lens has totally blown me away with it's sharpness corner to corner, fast focus, and quality of build. Just picking it up...you know it's something special. This lens is most always attached now, only getting supplanted by my 45mm when shooting portraits, and my Panasonic 100-300mm for wildlife s... A thing of beauty!

Jul 15, 2014

I bought the 12-40 when my 12-60 4/3 lens started the dreaded clicking -- it started sticking sometimes and it was really annoying to get improper exposures on such a nice system. This lens has been a joy -- it's very sharp throughout the aperture range, and focuses quite quickly and surely. Also, being able to use ALL the focusing points is really nice.
