fully worth 5 stars and here is why

Apr 25, 2018

Yes it does not compete with Zeiss or Sony GM - but for $250 it is optically super - yes not the fastest focusing lens or totally quiet - but for the money it is a super lens - it is sharp and that at f1/8 wide open - it is very light and really quite small - it feels like no weight at all - well yes it is not weather resistant either - but one can but a plastic cover on it and body if one needs to be out in the rain - I am glad to see this 50mm... Excellent optical quality, amazingly small and light. Slow, clumsy auto-focus, with lots of hunting back and forth. It's time for Sony to upgrade this lens to a modern design.

Bang for da Buck

Mar 20, 2018

Being a $200 lens, you would think not to expect much from it like I did, but I was blown away by the value I got here. It of course isn't the sharpest prime glass, and the older-style motors that drive the AF are noisy and quite slow but that's it as far as complaints go. Its nice and small which fits great with my A7II for a compact set-up that's easy to take around. I'm more of a video shooter, and I've come to terms that I can really only use... Show More

The "Shifty" 50

Mar 20, 2018

This is by far the worst focusing noisiest lens I own. All the rest are GM... but 50 isn't my fav focal length so couldn't justify the 55mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.4. The good It does what is advertised creates artsy images with that great full frame F1.8 Depth of field. So if you are looking something light weight lens that you don't need lightning fast focus and don't mind the noise or just want to MF its worth a look. If you want the sharpest image possible get the 55mm 1.8.

It could be better, but not for the money

Mar 15, 2018

Haven't used it all that much as I got it 10 days ago but so far it is just what I needed. Sure, the 1.8 in most lens comparisons is the 97 pound weakling when it comes to build quality, but not all that much slower than it's bigger sibling the 1.4 - about two thirds of a stop really (but a stop is twice the light). However when you consider the costs (around seven times more) you have to decide what 'better' is worth to you. The 1.4 or a 1.2 if ... Show More

great lens

Feb 27, 2018

This very reasonably priced all purpose lens is useful in a wide variety of situations, low light and street photos, for example. I am not a professional photographer and wished to buy a useful lens with spending too much. I think the quality would be considered excellent by most people except perhaps for those with an exceptionally trained or professional eye.

Great starter lens for FE Mount =]

Feb 9, 2018

I bought this lens for my nephew, who is starting in video & photo on his recently purchased A7S. I've borrowed it several times for quick shoots and for an entry-level lens, Sony continues to impress me on their optics. The focusing motor is very quiet, responsive, smooth, and pleasant for a small investment like this. I'm spoiled by Zeiss, so this is a pleasant surprise. There is some distortion, naturally - but we shoot i RAW, so this is adj... Show More

Just What I Was Looking For

Feb 7, 2018

I couldn't be happier with this purchase. The lens is sharp and focuses quickly, although focus is a bit slower than with other Sony lenses I use with the A7II. The quiet sound the lens makes while focusing is not an issue.

very good

Jan 30, 2018

have had it for just a few hours. the mounting to my A7ii was a bit stiff but not bad....it was the first thing I noted. Focus sound was not bad...muted and I'd guess one fourth as loud as the camera shutter sound. low amplitude tone, not harsh or bothersome. after a dozen shots inside and outdoors, the images are sharp I'm looking forward to a complete workout.

Slow focus, kinda high price

Jan 29, 2018

Has nice Bokeh, but cheap-ish build quality, high price and no OSS. I wish this lens cost what a Canon 50mm F1.8 cost - as its about the same quality. Priced more at the Canon 50mm F1.4 range, but it isn't in that quality bracket.

Excellent Lens

Jan 16, 2018

This lens is sharp, and renders a nice color. The auto focus may not be fast in darkness, but it is acceptable. It focuses perfectly when there is a plenty of light. Surprisingly, I found that the focus is always spot on. I guarantee the auto focus is much better than you use an adapter with Canon lenses. However, I think the price is still expensive - maybe it is a Sony lens. Canon can make a 50 mm. F 1.8 STM at lower than $200, Sony should have done too. Anyway, it is worth your money.

This lens is sharp, very sharp. I shoot wide open or close down 1 all of the time and using eye-af or not, the results are tack sharp. Focus speed is a little less than perfect, but in no way interferes with the work that I do. Light weight, good looking, nice manual focus ring.

I am writing this review so that others know it's not worth spending the time to order and return this lens. It hunts for focus. Why would B&H list this as an option for buying ? I respect B&H but not this lens. Stay away from this....

Just a cheap 50

Dec 16, 2017

I've not been super impressed by this lense so far. People talk about it being quite sharp but I've found it no sharper than my Tamron 24-70 G2. The biggest problem I have with this lense is the obvious and frequent chromatic aberration in sunny environments. Lots of pink highlights off of bright surfaces. That said, it's still a decent lense for the money, and I find focusing to be fast enough in most situations. It's also great for a walk around lense, so much easier to just go out and shoot with then heavy zooms like my G2.

Noisy & slow AF

Sep 26, 2017

AF is noisy, slow and with the tendency of hunting especially in dim light. The optical performance is not something to write home about either. Considering the high selling price, this is definitely not the best bang for the buck nifty fifty.

More than worth the money

Sep 9, 2017

I've been using this lens (also bought the 2.0/28 at the same time) for a lot of my shots in the field. I confess that it is just a bit slow to gain focus, and does not hold that focus in AF-S between shots, but it is probably faster and more accurate than I could be manually. Distortion is very low (compared to zooms that I had been using until now), and CA is almost non-existent. It is also comforting to have a field of view which I grew accustomed to back in my earliest days. It kind of rekindles the motivation and creativeness of those days I embraced photography.

Hard to beat as a manual lens

Aug 30, 2017

I agree the AF is not reliable, but on center focus it's not bad. As a manual lens it KILLS. Especially since my A7ii has focus peaking. Lens is feather light and focus ring has a smooth feel. AF does seem to work better in brighter light. I would not write this lens off, despite the low start reviews. At under $400 it's a bargain.

Light lens, Sharper and faster AF than Nikon or Canon's offerings. I use it for street photography and it nails subjects coming towards me with a almost 100% keeper rate. Focus mode: AF-continous, widearea and AF-on. Check my gallery lonewalkernyc for samples on Flickr search A7II 50mm

Pleasantly surprised by the very sharp quality of this lens at all apertures. Focus is slower than higher end lenses but very usable for what I do and not such a problem as I expected. Sometimes it does hunt in close ups. For the money this was a great value and is now one of my favorite lenses.

It is very sharp in the center at wider apertures; I can shoot at f2 and crop deep. Autofocus performance also works really well with the following settings: wide-area + continous focus + AF-ON .
