Images you can keep from a small camera

Feb 27, 2017

The Sony Alpha a6500 is now my walk-around camera. I gave it 5 stars, because my expectations for this camera were realistic and I got very much what I wanted: I was looking for the lightest-weight camera that allowed for full control and also recorded beautiful images, including great video. This camera is all that. I am using the Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens. Better lenses are available, but they are significantly heavier and prici... Show More

Incredibly flexible camera

Feb 25, 2017

I bought this to use professionally as a B-camera, as well as being a small light weight camera for street photography. It performs excellent in all ways. My only criticism, coming from a DSLR/Film background, is that the entire interface from top to bottom, is more like a computer than a camera. I'm warming up to the interface, as it's worth the relearn once you see the images this camera captures.

Definitely worth the upgrade from prior A6000 series models; particularly with the image stabilization.

It's a Small Wonder

Feb 18, 2017

Yes, it's all what these people say. I have the 6000. Did not consider using it for professional video work (flimsy body, no real control for picture profile) But this 6500, yes I'm using it for work. Still need stuff to make it pro level, though (cage, real mic, monitor and shoulder rig)

Super Snappy; Fun with FE Lenses

Feb 17, 2017

I want to start this review by saying something about the supposedly Byzantine menus on Sony cameras. You hear it all the time among camera reviewers. This would be such a great camera, they say, if only the menu weren't so confusing. I have a theory about these people. I think that either a) they don't actually use Sony cameras, or b) they are the type of people who find a lot of things confusing, like cities and email. People who actually use S... Show More

Great camera with some quirks

Feb 15, 2017

I use this camera for both stills and video. Coming from a Canon 70D, I decided on the a6500 because I really wanted 4K video, full HD slow motion, and a log picture profile, none of which Canon offer at a competitive price point. I've also used an original A7s extensively, so that was a point of comparison as well. If you've done your research then you know about the rolling shutter (it's bad, but not a deal breaker for me), and the Sony battery... Show More

Better than A6000 but not perfect.

Feb 13, 2017

I bought to replace/supplement an existing A6000. Auto-focus speed was the primary reason, and it does indeed seem faster, but still not 100% accurate in all cases. Only shot about 200 photos so far, and need to play around with more advanced settings to get fully comfortable with the camera

Evolution of the Sony 6000 series

Feb 13, 2017

I love my 6300, but I decided to add (not trade) up to the 6500 because the in-body stabilization adds considerable value since I can use my legacy Canon glass more effectively. I'm undecided about the touch-screen capabilities (never had that before, so it's never been a part of my workflow. Other than that, just a very solid, well made and extremely capable little camera.

Upgraded from an A6300

Feb 6, 2017

I've owned all the versions of the Sony a6*** Line....the A6000, A6300 and now the A6500. Each one was an amazing experience. Computers, cars, TV's.....As time goes by, technology gets better. The A6500 has advantages over the A6300 that may be beneficial to you. If you shoot mostly stills, then the A6300 will be a great choice. If you do any video....even a little bit.....then the A6500 would be possibly a better choice due to the image stabiliz... Show More

Amazing camera, Terrible battery life.

Feb 2, 2017

I really wish I could have given this camera 5 starts because the pictures and videos are amazing and this camera. I also love the compact design which makes it easy to travel with and once you get used to the menu system you will love this thing. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the battery life is TERRIBLE one this camera! I had to go out and buy 2 spare batteries to get me through a whole day. It should have included a 2nd battery for free.

Great camera. Annoying 4K.

Feb 1, 2017

I used to shoot with the A6000 and decided to upgrade. Great camera. The touch screen is ok, not the best. MAJOR problem is the dimming of the screen when shooting 4K video, research this before purchasing. I did not know about it before purchasing mine. Super annoying.

Good performer

Jan 31, 2017

Overall a fantastic camera for the price. I upgraded from the a6300 for the image stabilization, which enabled me to use my non-IS lenses. I use a metabones speedbooster with a variety of EF lenses, Canon, Tamron, Sigma, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the autofocus response and the built-in IS performance. Good stuff: 1. IS works great 2. Autofocus works great with non-Sony lenses through Metabones 3. Everything else great about the a6300,... Show More

A Nice Step Up from my A6000

Jan 23, 2017

The A6000 is a terrific camera, and it will be a nice backup for my new A6500. Primarily, the thing I like best about the A6500 is the new image stabilization, which allows me to use lenses that don't have it. I've just had the camera for a few days, and it is taking me a while to get used to the new menu, but the cloud is gradually lifting, and I think I'll like it better once I'm used to it. One thing I don't like about the A6000 is the viewfin... Show More

Jan 23, 2017

Rented a6500 to compare against a6300 which I own. Used 55mmf1.8, 50mmf1.8 oss, and 10-18mm f4 oss lenses for comparisons from which I drew pros and cons below. Pros -better grip for handheld shooting outside cage/rig -rack focus by tap to focus on lcd touch screen. -some stabilization with non-oss lenses (though arguably not as good as oss lenses on a6300). -longer 4k recording. Small, but powerful.

Jan 22, 2017

So stoked on this little fella! I have the Sony a6000 since it came out and did not upgrade to the a6300. So glad I waited it out as this camera is a beast! I love the way it feels in your hands, the new buffering system is incredible and still has all of the bells and whistles you would expect from the alpha series. It even has some features from the higher end A7 line that I really enjoy like the internal level and silent shooting. Can't go wrong.

New high-end aps/c Sony mirrorless is a winner.

Jan 17, 2017

Excellent camera. It has a high quality jpeg engine with some of the better sharpening algorithms (in the camera) I've seen. The camera's IQ is back to the NEX-7 level and it retains quick AF (of the 6300) and a high frame rate. 4-K video specs are nicely upgraded. The shutter sound in EFCS mode is very quiet and this was a pleasant surprise. I've paired it with the new FE 50mm macro and am getting very nice results.

4K UHD and IBIS quality is fantastic.

Jan 17, 2017

Fantastic, crystal-clear 4K UHD video and IBIS (Image Stabilization) and fast autofocus with the Metabones Ultra Speedbooster for stills. I've been very pleased with that aspect of the camera. The downsides are- the 120fps HD slow motion, while fun, is low-res and soft / grainy and the rolling shutter is horrific, even when converting to full-frame using said Speedbooster. Don't expect to be able to film fast-moving trains, cars, etc. I'd like to see them fix this in the next iteration of the camera.

If upgrading or moving to Sony this is a superb option

Jan 16, 2017

Upgraded from the 6300 and very happy thus far. The 6500 has all of the features of the previous model and the menu layout is more comprehensive. Image quality is as expected and the 5 axis stabilization is great for gimbal work on the Ronin M. Haven't done a ton of direct comparisons to my 6300 but definitely happy with this model. My only complaint is that time lapse should be an already included feature.
