It's ok
I bought this lens as soon as it was available. Loved the size and the color it delivers. The auto focus slowwwwwwww. If you just need a good 50mm and time is not a factor, this lens is good. However for fast paced action, go in a different direction.

Slow AF, but a very credible lens for the money
B&H shipped my lens a day or so after a few online reviewers had already gotten theirs, and began panning it for focus issues and focus noise. And so, I was prepared to be disappointed even before I shot a single frame with mine. You may see some of those complaints in reviews here, I am sure. But the reality is, a few tweaks in how you set up your camera will assure focus issues, noise and hunting are fixed The FE 50mm f1.8 is the first Sony FE ... Show More

Disappointed with Sony.
I had to return the lens and paid for shipping. Used it with A7s, the auto focus is horrible. It just breathing back and forth especially when the object three feet or less.It does not matter what the setting of your camera. My APS Sony 16-50 is performing far much better.

Autofocus is terrible, Expected Better
I just got this lens in the mail today and have been playing around with it on my a7rii. The autofocus is TERRIBLE and SO loud. I'm seriously considering returning it. I have more luck with my fotodiox adapter and canon lenses than I do with this lens. I seriously could not be more disappointed/heartbroken than I am right now. So, so bummed.

I so wanted to like this lens
Image quality is great for the price. Once you hit f4 the lens is very sharp and has lovely pop and color rendering. Take it to f1.8 and no surprise it is softer and has lower contrast. CA is also bad wide open. For someone who is not using it wide open it's fantastic. Even slept with someone who snores. Welcome to the worst AF motor in the Sony Stable. This lens sound loud. This is not an STM or USM lens, this is gears on gears. If not for the n... Show More

Very Sharp - Slow Focus
This lens works perfect on my Sony A7S (MK1) and my Sony A6000. I love the Depth of field with the f1.8 aperture. My biggest problem with this lens is it's autofocus performance. It's really slow at time and slow other times. It's on the noisy side also.

FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens by Sony... Not so Fantastic Plastic
You get what you pay for... Pro's: Price Light, small form factor Pretty sharp Nice bokeh at f1.8 close focus area at f1.8 color rendition looks good. Auto focus may be acceptable for shallow depth of field video (just as long as you don't move much) Con's: Auto focus constantly hunts (slow) Loud auto focus motor sound like heart pump (unacceptable to the pro shooter) No steady shot f1.4 would have been nice. Firmware update? Keep your receipt. T... Show More

Unimpressed
After owning the 50mm 1.8 OSS and renting the zeiss 55 I am very disappointed with the autofocus speed and accuracy in this lens. The a7 with continual autofocus is unusable for video. Although for $250 the sharpness and colors are good. So overall okay for portraits (if the subject is stationary) and horrible for video.

Not like other E mount lenses
This product is not smooth focusing like other E mount lenses. It is sharp, but the continuous focusing action when taking still photos is clunky and noisy. Also, the one I got was defective in that it would focus using pre-auto-focus AFC while shooting stills, but would not focus while on the movie setting. B&H said it is defective so I returned it. However, B&H was fantastic in this return and customer service as usual. Good IQ but not for me. I have six E mount lenses and have owned 19 A mount lenses. I really love Sony cameras but be careful on this one.

Two-Fifty Nifty
This is lens is the cheapest Sony branded glass for Full-frame. Its not going to give the same results as its more expensive brethren but it's a great starting point for someone making the jump into the land of Full-frame. The lens does make a lot of compromising choices to get to the price it sells for, like plastic body, louder motor noise, and extending barrel for focus. You shouldn't directly compare it to lenses that cost four times as much, it's almost unfair. The 50mm is a good lens for the price on a system that hasn't had many cheaper lenses.

Horrible Autofocus
Over-all great image quality for what it sells for, but autofocus is just horrible!!! (on A7S). Probably on par with Comlite adapter and Canon glass... I sure hope Sony will fix this soon with firmware update... Other than that, decent color rendition, sharp, compact and light.

sharp but slower than sel 50mm 1.8
i just bought it this morning, i am impressed by its sharpness when i took some photos using my sony a7 mark1. But one thing i noticed is that autofocus. It goes back and forth before it locks its focus to the subject. So i feel like i am using canon 50mm 1.8 stm with an adapter. It is the same experience when i used this lens. I feel a bit disappointed because i swapped my sel 50mm 1.8 oss, to get this lens but it seemed that i made a mistake of doing so beccause the cropped version is a better focuser. :((((

Very recommended!
Bought this lens today, in Sweden. While not up there with the Zeiss 55, its more than good enough for my needs. Well worth the price, and i paid more with our taxes, roughly 340$.
