This is the point and shoot camera I have been waiting for!
This is the one camera that does everything for me anywhere in the world that I shoot photos! Great Zeiss telephoto 30X lens with wide angle. Lightweight so that it fits in my front pocket. The flip up rear screen is great for taking selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower! Pop up view finder is great when the sunshine glare diminishes my rear screen view. It's easy to use and convenient when you want optimal photo quality and don't want to lug around a lot of gear. This is my every day point and shoot camera for day and night, landscape or faces. Best investment I have made all year.

Need better Zoom control in a Video mode
I returned a HX90v because the Control Ring response time was erratic and I could not get a smooth control of the Zoom when in a video mode, No sense paying extra for the control ring. I like the HX80v, but getting a smooth control of the zoom in a Video mode is really difficult or impossible. The Zoom speed setting choices of Normal and Fast that Sony provides .. I would call Fast and Faster. Too bad they don't provide a Slow and Slower Choice, That might solve the problem. I don't recommend this camera if you intend to shoot a lot of videos and need to control the Zoom.

Fantastic Carry Everywhere Camera
I bought this to have when my DSLR is not convenient (concerts, bike rides, etc). I took it along with the DSLR on a trip to the UK, and have been totally impressed by the photo quality, particularly the HDR mode. It's fast and able to handle low light well. I found myself reaching for it just as often as my DSLR. The features of the camera like wireless transfer and flip up viewfinder are really handy. If you find yourself leaving the DSLR at home, but being disappointed with the pictures you take with your phone, this is a great alternative.

Very fast super-zoom that actually fits in my pocket!
This camera is very fast and smart! Biggest pros: 30x Zeiss T* optical zoom equivalent of 24-720mm 3.5-6.4 Pop up LCD view finder. Pop up flash. Very compact. Long battery life. Fast AF and shutter response. Cons: Image quality at 100% crop. It can't match large DSLR sensors at any ISO, even at ISO 100 image is really grainy! Bottom line: Great for family & fun pics where fine image quality is not so important and camera size really matters. Useless for fine details at 100% crop at any ISO, but that's what DSLR is for!

Sony DSC-HX80 Fulfills All My Requirements
I bought the Sony DSC-HX80 camera for the zoom capabilities and it does not disappoint. Used primarily for travel and hiking, the 30X optical and additional 30X digital zoom provides me with the range to get closeups of distant subjects, primarily animals. The video capabilities are also excellent and combined with two high capacity memory cards (64GB) and a spare battery that were purchased with the camera, I have a great tool that has large capacity, a very compact and light package, and a pop-up viewfinder.

Great camera for its size and features
I wanted to get a better camera than my older pocket point and shoot and this one fit the bill. For me its still small enough to slide it into my pocket. The zoom on this camera is really good. Some reviewers have had complaints about taking pictures in low light situations, however I found some settings using the wheel on top, under SCN that have worked great. Very happy so far with this camera and the features it offers. I would certainly recommend this camera to anyone needing a new camera.

Very Impressed!
I own a very large DSLR with telephoto lenses and wanted something small to capture a few wedding moments, as I am not the photographer but a guest. Last week I took the Sony Cyber-shot for a test shoot at the Statue of Liberty. I returned home and downloaded the photos to my computer and was very happy with the results. The images were sharp, little to no noise and had perfect color capture. The camera is great and at a very low price point it is most impressive.

Great Quality in small package!
I, too, could not imagine the results I have obtained using this compact camera. I recently returned from a trip to Italy, found this camera to do everthing my Digtal SLR can do without having tote around lenses and other gear. I would recommend this to anyone who is planning a trip. It will lighten your load, AND it will give you quality exposures which can be greatly enlarged withou sacrficing clarity! I am most impressed, and give an excellent recommendation.

Pleased with this camera
I bought this camera to use when my D750 and lenses are just too much to carry. I do a lot of hiking and wanted a pocketable camera with a long zoom to grab wildlife photos. I am happy with the image quality for photos taken at ISO 400 and below. For low light, image quality suffers owing to the small sensor. This is the trade off that is necessary to reduce the camera and lens size. Overall I am pleased with the results I am getting with this tiny camera.

A little package with a lot of tech
It is a great camera with many features. I can deal with most of technology having some experience. My wife will have to do some learning. I bought it for her. A SIMPLE point and shoot may have been a better choice for her. This little package, out performs my heavy, large body unit with a bag full of lens. It makes me wonder why I should keep it. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX 80 is an excellent camera for quality photography.

great optical quality/compact
Such a versatile camera. Excellent build quality. Fine optical quality on the lens. Great because it's small. High zoom makes it really useful for a variety of situations. I only returned it because my wife and I agreed that the kids might start using it without supervision--as with any camera, there is a high likelihood of that, with attendant risks. We were, and still are, attracted to this camera for a lot of reasons.

Nice, but not impressive.
Did not show any advantage over a phone-cam, except for the Zoom lens (which is truly exceptional). Seems as too complicated to setup, weird things/behaviours happen without my control or understanding. Although good size, doesn't feel so comfortable in my hands. All in all it shows some good qualities, but I expected more of the picture quality at 18mp and the disappointing CMOS processor. Does not worth its price.

Excellent compact super zoom
This is an excellent little camera, with a great zoom and lots of features. It takes great photos, about as good as you can expect from the small sensor. All cameras are trade-offs, and this one is a very nice package of features, size, weight, and cost. It has become my main travel camera. Fits in a pouch or in my pocket. I appreciate being able to download photos by wifi and/or QR Code.

Perfect small camera!
I was looking for a small, lightweight camera with a view finder. This absolutely fits the bill! The viewfinder is adequate. The viewing screen is fantastic. And, the 30x zoom is wonderful. It comes with a wrist strap instead of a neck strap, which I wasn't too crazy about, but it also comes with a pouch with a neck strap, so that is a good work-around. I definitely recommend it!

Excellent
This is my second Sony point and shoot and by far the best. The HX80 is great for travel and the reports of noise at distance is somewhat of an exaggeration. I have pretty much replaced my full size Pentax SLR with the small point and shoot considering it is smaller and less expensive that one SLR lens, without sacrificing much in overall picture quality due to the slower lense.

perfect combo of features
I was looking for a very small camera with LCD that flips up into selfie mode, and an eyepiece viewfinder. This is it. Smaller, lighter & less expensive than RX100 series with the tradeoff of smaller image sensor that results in lower low-light picture quality. Over all, its a great camera. (BTW, this camera is basically the same as DSC-HX99. HX99 just adds 4K video)

A compact camera with DSLR features.
I have been lugging a DSLR around long enough. This camera has the same program features of my old Nikon, has a higher resolution sensor, a single fixed lens that has more reach than the telephotos that I never carried to save weight. I especially like having the active viewfinder, which makes the camera more like a DSLR than a point and shoot.

One of the best point-n-shoots ever
The first thing I tried was the 30:1 optical zoom, which is a total knockout! Picture quality is superb and I love almost everything about the DSC-HX80. For the money, Ive never had such a versatile little camera. This would be the ultimate point-n-shoot if Sony had added the multi angle display screen and hot shoe from the DSC-RX100 II.

A great versatile camera
I purchased to be used as a general everyday camera for a person who is not interested in the complexity of at DSLR but wants versatility. With the easy scene settings and extreme telephoto ability, this has been very useful for everything from taking a picture at a birthday party to a close up at a school concert from very far away.

Nice little camera
After having my own RX-100 stolen and learning that my friend also had his stolen, I decided I didnt want to invest another $1200 in what was essentially my travel snapshot camera. This camera is a great camera for the price and I really like the 30x telephoto. My only concern is I hope I dont come to regret not having RAW.

Great pocket camera!
I have a nikon d800 and a fuji xt1 and I needed a pocket camera, so I bought this Sony HX80 and I love it. The zoom is superb, pocket size, great pictures, great video and image stabilization, the pop up viewfinder is great and very handy in sunny conditions. I am very please with the buy, will highly recomend this camera.

Small sensor can't serve the long zoom
Images are not sharp, especially at the high end of zoom. They look soft, as if under a watercolor filter. A 1 sensor would probably improve images greatly. The menu is same as my RX100 IV. It takes quite some time to become familiar with it, if you're new to Sony. I love my RX100. I didn't like the HX80. I sent it back.

i would not buy it again but keeping this one in my boat
very unsharp shots specially at over 200 asa but the size makes it convinient as a back up camera to my others and also to keep on a boat where if it gets damaged ,did not loose much the telephoto at its extreme delivers extremely poor quality shots at wide angle and up to say 150mm it is ok but nothing to brag about .

Not worth it
This camera has so much pixel smearing it is horrible! You would think with 18MP you would be able to blow up some photos, but even shots at 100ISO are too smeared. I would recommend getting a used RX100 - or any compact digital with a 1-inch sensor if you care at all about image quality.
