Great camera
I use this camera for wildlife photography the long lens was the selling point for me. I own four Sony DSLRs and six lenses , but can't afford a lens this long for them. This is a great camera with a fantastic lens. I have heard comments that the lens is slow at the long end. Look at the speed of lens and converters to get5 1200mm.

Noticeable improvement over the HX200
Zoom seems to be much smoother, quieter and faster which is good when shooting wild life such as ducks. Focus appears to be better! I'm enjoying the camera and its improvements.

Three weeks of experience
Any time you buy something on the Internet, there is always a higher risk that you will be disappointed since you haven't actually handled the product. Not this time. The HX400V is a winner. I am a hobbyist. What I love to do is shoot interesting photos and take them into Photoshop and get creative. I shoot all types of subjects, but get to pick the time and place (indoors or out). I experiment a lot with how I shoot. Having lots of shooting mode... Show More

B&H SELLS ONLY GOOD STUFF
A well designed and thoughtout camera. An excellent product for a fair price. For the amount of zoom, the way this camera handles the low light is excellent.

I would buy this product again!
I love this camera, the ease of use, the many options for shooting, the Ziess lens, everything right down to the weight of it in my hand is perfect. The picture clarity is excellent. The only negative comment I can come up with is the fact that there is a bit of lag time between taking a photo and the camera being ready to take the next one. In spite of that, I recommend it highly.

Update to earlier review
I have been using this camera quite a bit over the last few weeks. I have gotten good to great results in most shooting situations. Two areas where it fell a bit short: Shooting a stage performance. I was about 20-25 feet from the stage. Flash did not illuminate enough to capture sharp image without motion blur as performers moved about the stage. 2nd, as noted in another review, the write speed is slow for a camera in this price range so it can be a bit maddening waiting for the camera to be ready for a follow up shot.

Good Bridge Camera if Zoom is Important
My experience in bridging the gap between a basic point and shoot (works but limited utilityjust use your phone for those shots) and a more advanced DSLR or high end mirrorless cameras is fraught with compromise. The HX400V seems to be a good compromise if super zoom is really important to you. This camera and those in its class from Canon and Nikon zoom to 1200mm. This feature has the ability to bring things up close and personal. However to ach... Show More

Purchased power zoom for SXSW 2015
I have been carrying the 'smaller' Sony point and shoot HD camera for a couple years now and have gotten some fantastice shots. I looking forward to a more 'powerful and responsive' camera this trip and already know the 'pics will be good'. Since what I love to do most is 'photography', you can never have too much. I spent many years with SLR cameras and love the ease of use of these 'point and shoot'. You can't go wrong.

Very disappointing purchase
I bought this camera shortly before leaving on a long trip to take zoom pictures at several sporting events. Unfortunately the camera did not come with any instructions for use so it was very very difficult to override all the many many automatic features and it was aggravating to use this thing. This camera is made to rule the photographer, not the other way around; it is very complicated to figure out what settings are in play at any given mome... Show More

Erratic results; has a mind of its own
I've been taking photos for 50 years and was looking for a camera to replace my old DSLR that had become obsolete. I'm wishing I stayed with what I had as I am very sorry that I bought this camera a day before leaving on a very long vacation which included three major sporting events because it is extremely difficult to use unless you want to be at the mercy of all its myriad automatic features which cannot be shut off or overridden (and there ar... A Great Camera!
Over the years, I have owned dozens of cameras, from simple point and shoots to expensive and heavy slr's and dslr's. In consideration of the foregoing, I can unequivocally say that the HX400V is a great multi-use camera. It is light weight, has a great zoom, and takes very sharp pictures from 24mm to 1200mm and 1200mm to 2400mm is good also. Now, of course, I am taking the photos in south Florida where the intense sun helps in the photo taking process, so I don't know how the camera will work in northern states. In south Florida, it is great!

Amazing piece of technology!
I am used to using a dslr and was concerned with how fast the shutter worked to focus and take a photo. It is fast and mostly accurate. At the longest zoom it is a little harder to focus sometimes, but mostly really good. There is a bit of a lag between photos on which apparently the speed of the SD card doesn't seem to help, but this is something I will have to get used to. The photos are quite amazing, even at long zooms, shooting birds through grubby windows. I am thrilled and looking forward to using this camera on my travels and everyday life so that I don't have to carry then heavy dslr.

Great Bridge/super zoom camera
Has most functions of DSLR in a small size without the lense changing. It was a good choice for the task of taking pictures at a football game where my Sony 70-400mm zoom would not be allowed. The focus worked very well for both stills and video. The menu allows for great flexibility and control of stills and video.

Great camera...
It is a great camera with many many features. I really only have two complaints. 1. The location of the NFC is in a bad location next to the strap holder. I have a very difficult time getting my phone in the right place to connect. To bad they didn't switch it around where the WI-FI is. 2. The Sony phone support in my opinion is terrible. They do not know the product and several times gave me wrong information. The telephone lines wherever they are very bad also.

Easy to use camera
I bought this camera for quick pictures of deer etc. in my fields. I have used 100ED & 80ED refractors prime focus with a Pentax 6MP DSLR camera in the past, slow to setup etc.I really like this Sony camera, just wish I bought it when it was $ off instead of $. I had no trouble with lens cover!

Everything you need........is right here
I've had Sony products before and didn't like Memory Stick as it was not universally accepted into a lot of other hardware. This Sony uses SD cards or Memory Stick - much better. We didn't want a DSLR and carry heaps of lenses.People think they'll become professionals - and it never happens.Shutter speed is super quick - very little delayThe Zoom is awesome - you could easily get great photos, even from the cheap seatsCamera is very lightNice to ho... Awesome camera for the non-professional
Optical zoom is terrific without having to carry a giant lens attachment. Clarity and resolution drops off when digitally zoomed. However, even with this minor disadvantage, this is a camera that goes with me everywhere. It is light, point and shoot makes it very easy to use, stabilization is great even when fully zoomed, manual overrides add the special touch pros look for in a camera, GPS and WiFi options are added conveniences, and the ability to run apps on the camera are a real plus when doing time lapse shoots.

The clear image zoom is great
The camera is great and the clear image zoom that takes it's out to 100x is about as good as the optical 50x. I would buy again.

Great camera
I need a camera that can get super close and detailed as well as capture a subject from far far away. This camera does that and more. This is my second in the series - I also have and HX200 which is also amazing.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX400V
The product is great however you need to download a special program to upload your video content. I had trouble with the download because it was saying it was not compatable with my Mac computer. The 3 Sony representatives that I spoke to were the most unhelpful people. I did however have a good shopping experience at B&H.

Outstanding Bridge Camera
I purchased the HX400 as an alternate to carrying my DSLR when I want to go for a bicycle ride & shoot wildlife or flowers along the way. My pictures are sharp courtesy of the Zeiss lens & Sony's SteadyShot Image Stabilization. The only negative comment & the reason for only a 4 star rating is the write time. This is not a camera designed for sports or any other situation where you need to shoot multiple pictures quickly. I checked the travel & family photos boxes. The caveat being don't expect to shoot several pictures in quick succession.

Great Camera for my Wife, not an expert
This camera was primarily purchased to take pictures of our kids playing sports. We needed a high zoom camera without carrying 2 lens' everywhere. This camera fits the bill exactly not small but not huge by any means. Takes great photos and with enough education will be perfect for what we need. I only gave it 4 stars because the book to use it is non existant and there is very little online support for it. If you look hard enough you can find anything but had a very hard time finding setup info on this camera. Besides that it is great.
