good for what it is
Not going to replace a real shotgun or a wireless lavaliere, but it worked better than I thought it would. I was especially surprised that it didn't pick up much autofocus noise. I hope I live long enough to see high quality audio and audio controls integrated into DSLRs.

Great Shotgum Mic for DSLR Shooters
I choose this shotgum mic over the others in its price range for it's metal construction, flash recording capability, and relatively nice user interface compared to the others I looked at, which included the most comparable RDE mics. I am happy with my choice and recommend this product.

Exceptional Product
STRONG BUILD! Suspension system is solid, cold shoe mount it great. Worth it's weight which is very manageable. Great mic with great sound and nice on-board controls. Two real pluses, the onboard mini sd card for direct recording, (and playback), and a headphone jack for Canon D1X users and Nikon bodies without a audio-out jack. Fits and balances well on 5-D Mark III. Optional wind screen (dead-cat) fits snugly over existing foam screen for further wind noise cancelation. Great Product!

Great Idea, Good followthrough...
I have yet to compare it with similar mic's (meaning DSLR specific mic's as this is still the only one in it's class that has the ability to record) but the build, the functionality the display are all perfect... It is a little heavier than I would like BUT I would not sacrifice the weight if it made the mic more fragile... I like the solid metal build... the front door is a bit odd getting to the microSD card and the batteries can be a bit chall... Show More

versatile on camera mic
I bought the vp83 version first, and realize that I better just go with the vp83f with build-in recording feature. So I exchanged to the vp83f. This device has very professional looking. feel solid. The menu is very intuitive. I can change setting very fast. So why build-in reocording? seems redundant, right? The main purpose for me is for capture unintentional dialogue from any events. Many times you were't recording video for some reasons. Mayb... Show More

Great Mic for DSLR
I had just purchased the Rode Videomic Pro when I bumped into a friend who wouldn't stop singing the praises of the VP83F. And, sure enough, after taking the VideoMic on a test run, the little rubber shock mounts seemed poorly attached and designed. I returned the VideoMic and used my balance (plus a little extra cash) to buy the VP83F and I haven't looked back. The build seems much sturdier than the VideoMic and I don't worry about having to rea... Show More

Very Impressed
The design, build quality, ease-of-use and durability are impressive! I haven't used in the field yet but was immediately compelled to write a review on this one and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality run-and-gun mic...but only if you don't have the money in the budget for a sound person. It's a bit heavy though, a small price to pay for a solid piece of gear.

Audio is Nice! Recorder a Bonus!!
External Mic is a welcome addition to my 5d3. Way better than the internal dslr mic. Having a recording option within the mic is a bonus. The menu for the flash recorder is very simple to operate, as well. Time to get the fuzzy windscreen for it now!!

Very Nice!
I purchased this mic to capture quality sound for my 5D II. I literally opened the box on a Friday and and shot a wedding with it the next day. Everything worked extremely well. The build quality is solid and feels very durable for the long term. I used the mic to record to my camera for syncing in post but the power of this mic is to record straight to its micro-sd card. It works perfectly for capturing solid audio on the run. I also recommend purchasing a deadcat, Shure hadn't released it so I bought a rode deadcat and it worked great. Have fun recording!
