I'll predicate my observations with a some information that might help you consider the source of the review; *I'm an old guy. My best recordings were done on analog magnetic tape in the '70's. *I once used a dedicated Yamaha AW16G work station to produce a sound track for a multimedia project; It was not 'intuitive' and I found it incredibly difficult to use. *'Intuitive' to me indicates a relatively simple, logical protocol with very little trial and error in the process. This interface bundle had great reviews everywhere online. Many YouTube videos suggested that this kit was a good bundle for beginners. The reviews said that the included Studio One software was "intuitive" and 'easy to use'. Unfortunately, I did not follow up with the many YT tutorials on this software. So, the frustration that followed my purchase was somewhat self-inflicted. The only thing intuitive about this bundle was the hardware set up. It would be 'intuitive' to those of us who've connected microphones, instruments, speakers and head phones to amplifiers or mixers. If you've never done that, it's not 'intuitive'. The Studio One download screwed up my computer and robbed the audio from every video source including YouTube. To get it back I had to restart the computer. I was never able to record anything on this software. Finally, I uninstalled everything Presonus from my computer and loaded ONLY the USB96 driver. I then downloaded Audacity DAW . . . which immediately recognized the Presonus hardware. Then it was a matter of settings and becoming familiar with the DAW. While Audacity is a simpler place to start than Studio One, neither of these are 'intuitive'. There's a huge amount of trial and error to figure tings out: that's the biology of DAW's - learning curve is straight up. Had I to do it over, I'd spend extra money and buy separate components: JBL 305 monitors, MOTU 2 or maybe 2i2 Focusrite interface and Audio Technica 2035 LD mic. The reason I feel this way is that I found out that not all interfaces are created equal. Some preamps produce a stronger signal than others. The Presonus USB 96 I feel provides a weak signal and require the gain to be set too high to achieve decent results. Your mileage may vary. ... More

This interface would be fine had the manufacturer done a better job with the firmware / drivers and ports on the unit. Unfortunately two of my friends and I all have one and have experienced the same issues: the usb port is super janky and even the slightest touch or bump can cause it to dissconnect and sometimes crash the DAW which can result in lost work. It also fails to connect sometime (i assume this is a firmware issue) if this happens you typically have to restart your computer to get it working again which is a total waste of time. (Me and two other friends have experienced these issues on seperate computers) Save your money, buy something thats better quality, and you'll save yourself a lot of time and headaches. ... More

This worked okay for recording from a mixer board, but using an external mic with the internal pre-amps didn't go too well. Past the 1-2 o'clock mark on the main gain knobs made a lot of noise. Also, the main output is really quiet. I couldn't swap it out for a Samson mixer because I had to adjust the amplifier's gain up such that I could hear noise from that! Also, for a form factor that leans towards desktop use, I wish they would have mounted the headphone jack on the front. MIDI I/O and main outputs are one thing since they don't usually get moved around, but headphones, not so much. The XLR jacks on the font make mobile/portable use a pain because wires have to stick out the front and the back. I would have rather seen everything but the headphones on the back of the unit. If you use a laptop, you might loose power to the interface if you close the lid, so beware that it needs power from the USB port to operate even if you aren't using the PC for audio processing. Now for the good stuff. The dynamic range is pretty good for most uses if the gain isn't maxed out. The headphone output is nice to listen to, but I didn't test it to see if I could hear any latency. You can use this to record two separate channels in Audacity running on Debian Linux with no trouble--I didn't need any crazy drivers, but JACK wasn't working right for other reasons. I suspect Ubuntu Studio would have been just fine with it. This is a 2 in-2 out USB interface. As long as you keep the gain low, they sound really good, and you don't hear noise from the pre-amps. I plan on returning this and buying a Behringer U-Phoria or a Tascam recorder/interface instead, although a Zoom product is also on the list of options. I need something more suited to confined spaces and portable use. ... More

I get great sounds micing my amp or plugging my guitar directly into the presonus. Used it through a mac mini & garageband until the mac started running horribly slow. Switched to a PC and it hooked right up no problem! I dont use garageband anymore since it's a mac product but the presonus works with other recording programs

Super simple to use. Monitors are great for the price point. I havent used the headphones enough yet to give an honest critique. I didnt gry the bundle that included a mic, so I cant comment on that. But I've recorded guitar direct and with a mic from my Boss Katana, and voice over for video. The USB96 worked exactly as I wanted. If you're looking for a solid setup to get into home recording, this is a fantastic choice. Go get a free DAW, plug in to the USB, and start recording.

Bought this for son. He is figuring it our as we go along. A simple user guide would be cool. Biggest drawback so far in the mic they send does not have a stand. Even a table stand would be cool.

I have been using this, mainly, for composing full songs. The interface was a little tricky to set up at first, but it was super smooth after I made the necessary adjustments. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 of 5 is because when I was mixing some loops together for a track, the peaking points give off a horrendous crackling sound. Also the headphones have like zero substance so be careful.

Pros: Very nice monitors, headphones, mic quality, easy to set up, all cables included. Cons: I really can't think of any. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to start recording quality music with a budget. All in all I'm very pleased with the product so far.

Guitar Center sent us A returned kit where the mike was missing it's clip and the serial number was already in use so we couldn't download the drivers — luckily our local guitar center was much more responsive and were able to replace it for a focusrite kit that is awesome!
