The great walk around lens.

I have had the lens for only 2 weeks, I used a 4/3 12-60 lens on my em-1 and it worked well but much heavier.

Seems better than the Panasonic 12-35

Dec 24, 2016

I compared this to my copy of the Panasonic 12-35 and must say that it appears sharper across the field with the exception of 40 mm where the center region is not quite as sharp as the Panny at 35 mm when both are used at 2.8 The Olympus is a little heavier but also focusses closer and works better with the new omd em1 ii.

Top zoom lens with tonnes of versatility

Dec 12, 2016

I've only had the lens for a couple weeks and so far am blown away by it. I had been using a 25mm prime (50mm effective) for two years, which takes great photos, but was after something with a bit more flexibility, especially at wider angles. This lens has certainly delivered. Fully open, it is fantastic for landscapes, giving a real sense of openness in your frame, without any noticeable distortion, which I've read can occur on very wide angle l... Show More

A pro lens to love

Dec 11, 2016

I bought this lens after having had the standard 12-42 mm variable aperture lens but needed something to increase the professionalism of photographing with my Olympus OM-D EM 5. The lens is far more sturdy and focuses fast. Best of all, its 2.8 aperture works wonderfully well, providing an out of focus background quite well.

A pro lens for Micro 4/3

Very nice versatile lens. Excellent build quality with very solid feel. That build quality comes with a slight cost, however: The lens is a little on the heavy side for a MFT system (13.5 oz).

A must-have for the EM-5 Mark II

Jul 19, 2016

Recently purchased a EM-5 Mark II and was very impressed with this very versatile and compact mirror-less. However was not all that happy with the image sharpness and overall quality using the consumer 14-42 mm Zuiko lens I bought with it, not much better than any brand X point and shoot. The purchase of the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens solved that and then some. On 8 x 10 prints I could not discern any significant difference between the EM-5 MII and a... Show More

I really wanted to like this lens, but

Jul 5, 2016

I have been waiting to purchase this lens for a while, and I finally did when the price dropped recently. I had hopes that this could be a great all-around lens AND MAYBE my primary go-to, walk-around, take anywhere lens when I didn't want to pack a couple primes and have to worry about changing lens while I was out. It comes close, but after a few weeks of use it hasn't lived up to my expectations. For one, it's heavy! I know there's a lot of gl... Show More

My favorite go-to lens

Jun 30, 2016

I love this lens. As I get older, and my back gets worse, I just can't haul my DSLR system around any more. I've gone to the Olympus E-M1 almost exclusively. This is the lens I use the most. It's sharp as a tack, and very fast. I love it so much that when I knocked my tripod over on a large rock, and took a chunk out of the middle of it, I ordered another immediately. I just can't be without it!

Excellent Lens

Buy it!

May 17, 2016

What a sharp lens! And so very small compared to my big full frame set up with the equivalent lens. Not many drawbacks on this lens except one. The manual focus clutch mechanism gets knocked in and out of operation when putting it in and out of my camera bag. No big deal but one must double check if you want auto focus right out of the bag for a quick shot.

Great Lens

Apr 27, 2016

This has to be one of Olympus' best lenses. If you only get one lens, this is the one to get. It's not too big and heavy and mates beautifully with the OMD system. Great crisp and clear pics.

Absolutely solid lens

Apr 6, 2016

I use this lens with an OM-D E-M5 II, primarily for landscape photography. It covers most of the focal lengths I tend to shoot in (equivalent of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 80mm). The lens feels great, feels very high quality. I love the manual focus clutch, and the lens hood (included, thankfully) has a positive click for engaging onto the lens so it wont unscrew on you. It's also reversible as well. The biggest selling point for me on this lens was the f... Show More

Solid build and performance

Mar 20, 2016

It's pretty difficult to fault this lens in any way. Results are consistent and predictable. Feel is heavy and solid. Mounted on my EM5 mkii, the combination feels like military industrial grade tech that would survive anything. Everything about this lens is a yes. You can find technical reviews everywhere that praise it. If the range suits your style, you won't find anything better in any format.

A fantastic lens

Feb 8, 2016

This is my first pro lens for my OMD-EM10 Mark II. It makes my little camera feel like a real camera with this attached. Up until now I have gotten great shots with my prime lenses but bought this so I can take it out for the day without switching lenses. It has a build quality which is much more substantial than the primes. it operates smoothly and I like the way manual focus engages. I'm still not sure what to do with the function button though. I wasn't sure how it would be on the entry level OMD because the camera body is so small but with the grip on the body it is just right.

Don't buy Olympus product

Feb 4, 2016

Don't let the PRO fool you. I have the lens for a year. It take great picture, but even normal use will not hold. Sent it back to Oly for repair, wait two weeks for parts, come back with a missing screw on the lines mount. Sent it back again, and come back with the manual focus will not focus. It is wasting time. I also have EM-1 and EM-5, they all need repair.

First Class Lens for the OMD System

Jan 31, 2016

I recently bought the E-M5 to test out the mft system as a smaller/lighter replacement to my apsc mirror-less cameras. I was impressed enough with the camera to get the 12-40 f/2.8 while it was on sale. I'm convinced. When I need a smaller alternative to my ff cameras, the OMD cameras with lens options like the excellent Oly 12-40 f/2.8 lens is the way to go...at least for me.

A vast improvement over the 'kit' lens

Jan 29, 2016

This comes close to being a 'primary' lens as the focal length, the f2.8 aperture and the weight of the lens make it a great everyday choice. Yes, it is a bit heftier than the kit lens, but it is worth it for the added sharpness and light gathering capabilities of the lens. Good things: 1. f2.8 maximum aperture (versus f3.5 to f5.6 for the kit lens 2. Sharpness.....much, much better than the kit lens 3. Contrast....much better than the kit lens (... Show More

Nice and clear

Jan 19, 2016

I gave up my 14-150 for this because the f2.8 instead of f4 to 5.6. The new lens will also do focus stacking with the firmware 4.0, and because I am a macro fan, this really delights me. It is heavier than the other lens, but is decidedly well built. The manual focus clutch is a fast way to go back and forth between auto focus and manual which really helps me taking bird pictures with branches in the way. And I can even take it out in the rain!
