As of this writing there are two field recording external microphones for iPhones that utilize the Lightning connector. Zoom iQ7 and the RODE iXY. Essential to the use of the microphones are two apps available through the Apple store. RODE Rec sells for $5.99 and the ZOOM Handy Rec is free. Both apps will work just fine with the built-in microphone in the iPhone and both apps are interchangeable for either the ZOOM iQ7 or the RODE iXY. The ZOOM iQ7 costs about one half the list price for the RODE iXY. I bought the ZOOM iQ7 and am very happy with it. I don't have any way to compare the two directly. The RODE iXY may well be worth the additional cost but I suggest that any potential buyers compare the specs of the two units. I am using the RODE Rec recording app with the ZOOM iQ7 and find it far superior in terms of flexibility. I suspect that both of these apps are just a little past beta testing and there could be improvements in future upgrades. The cost of RODE Rec is nominal in my view and I would recommend anyone interested in these accessory microphones to try both apps. ... More

Husband has worked as a singer-songwriter and studio engineer, and has been looking hard for two years for a portable mike to take on the road, or just for capturing early bits of songs wherever he likes. This great little device from Zoom looked like it might finally fit his standards/expectations. It has not disappointed!! It is very clear, and very detailed in its recording. Download the app and test it out; on raw recording in the living room, it beat garageband hands down. This device hasn't made it into the studio yet, but record/playback on iPhone 6+ was sharp and nuanced. Stays on while plugged into iOS device, so disconnect to save device battery. Husband is SUPER happy with it. ... More

I use this mic in two ways. 1. for better audio recording on interviews and 2. for better audio with my video. The mic is wonderful for both. I definitely recommend playing around with it before you go out to use it professionally. It's got a bit of a learning curve but packs a mighty punch.

I use the iQ7 for videos and audio only recording. It does an exceptional job in both respects compared to the built in mic on my iPad Air. The only complaint that I have is actually with Apple rather than Zoom in that the lightning connector is the weak link between the iPad and external hardware. You really need to be careful how you handle the device when the mic is connected.

The sound quality that this device deliver is neat. Definitely better than regular IPhone mic , however if your ears are used to the crisp sound of a well equipped studio recording you will notice a marginal difference in quality. Non the less , it went beyond my expectation in terms of sound quality. it records in all directions except except one. It would have been more gadgety if it recorded in all direction. I use this device to record meetings discussions so that I can later write the minutes of meeting down on paper. I also use this device to record my simultaneous interpretation from English to Arabic and vice versa so that I can later evaluate of performance. ... More

I just used this to shoot a 4-day music festival, mainly for social media and internal use. Music ranged from quiet ballads and instrumentals to a 40-piece orchestra and chorus. I also recorded backstage interviews. I am pleased with the clean results, and the 90-degree setting does a nice job of isolation. However, monitoring the iQ7 proved difficult. The mic's headphone jack doesn't work in video mode. And the LED peak meter and level dial are all but unusable when shooting, noisy as touching the mic is. That is impossible not to do when the mic is plugged directly into the phone and just next to the home button. The mic did not fit with my slim-ish Spigen phone case on, anyway, even with spacer removed. So I jury-rigged an Imorden GH-02 hand grip to mount the mic remotely. I highly recommend this particular grip and remote mic mounting generally. You'll avoid touching the mic and also relieve much of the stress on the phone jack. Despite audio for video shortcomings, I would say this mic is a good choice with sound quality commensurate with iPhone video. So more like 4.5 stars here. ... More

I am a language teacher and I use the IQ7 as an audio recorder to record voice mainly and as a mic for video when filming with iPhone 6S Plus. It gives a very clear voice recording when held about 2 feet from the speaker. It captures ambient sound much better than the iPhone built-in mic when shooting video. Voice from 15 to 20 feet away in a quiet room still comes out clear and loud enough for intelligible sound. It looks a bit fragile and must be handled with care; It would be easy to rip the heads of the body of the mic, so some kind of case is essential for transport. ... More

I'm writing this review after purchasing this once and having had to exchange it and getting the same results from the replacement device. The mic actually does create a beautiful wav file. It sounds great. But here's the problem with the unit; The monitor jack is just not good. I tested the two units on different ios devices and used different headphones with the same results. While monitoring live recording, the sound shifts from mono to stereo, from left to right and clips. When playing back a wav file, within seconds it emits a loud digital blast of white noise. It's ear piercing. Note: when I unplug the device and listen to the same wav file using the native ios monitor jack, it sounds really good. It's so good that I'm disappointed I have to return it for a refund, due to the monitor jack failure. Really cool idea. I love the design. Oh well. ... More

This is a great-sounding mic that's small and easy to carry. And the included foam windscreen also makes a good gripper to help keep this little guy from slipping out of your bag or pocket. I use it mainly for recording nat sound and ambience, and it has good sensitivity for that. I have an older phone (iPhone 7 Plus), and the lightning plug is a little wobbly and so it makes a little bit of static, but as long as I'm not roughly handling my phone it's not a problem. I tried it on my wife's newer phone and it fits much more securely. ... More

I first tried this Mic at a SF Con my wife was speaking at for her Website, and to my horror I ended up largely recording me and everyone behind me rather than her! Was never sure what the volume knob was telling me, and even once I got both mics pointed in the right direction the improvement in sound quality was...ehh. Worse, by the end of our second SF Con the microphone had broken off their stands, so didn't matter if I turned it or not - they just hung off the stands by their wires.

Phone speakers are not all created equal and typically not good for recording on the run and or at home. The Zoom iQ7 takes your lightning equipped iPhone to the next level with super high quality audio recordings. I would recommend this to anyone recording audio into the iPhone for music and or voice recordings.

Good mic. Would recommend you buy some high fidelity headphones with a volume control because the volume on the phone will get bypassed through the mic. Sounds good, very portable and effective with iPhone Garage Band.

Really happy with this product. It's compact, easy to use and improves the audio on very basic video recordings. I'm using it close to the subject, I don't think it would work well if I was far away, but it does the trick for what I need.

I used this for my Toastmasters club to record speeches. I had to turn my audio up to max on my PC to hear the recording. It may just be that I have some learning and experimenting to do to reap the benefits of an external mic for an iPhoneX. I plan on using it for recording podcasts in the near future.
