Wow, dead quiet

Before this I was using a scarlett 2i2 2nd generation interface. Let me tell you, this thing is dead quiet, unlike the scarlett, I was getting constant usb hum from my recording with the scarlett. I love the ur22, I can power it with a 5v, hence no power draw from computer usb, no noise. Recording will yield clean and clear audio, thick sounding, as opposed to the scarlett, which was sounding a little thin in comparison. I am keeping this and am selling the scarlett. which I used to love.

This little box is pretty great. I use it in my small home setup and it does the job nicely. Latency is great and the preamps are clean and clear at normal levels. I really like that it has MIDI I/O because I use it with an electric piano and don't have to burn another USB slot. This thing is built like a tank too...I would have no problem taking it on the road. The only thing I've run into so far that I'm not thrilled with is how noisy the preamps get at higher levels. It's not really noticeable at normal microphone levels, but if you need a lot of clean gain...this will not cut it. Really though, this is a cheap 2-channel all-in-one box; you can't expect to get studio-grade preamps built in. You can still make some great sounds with this little guy though. Couldn't get it to work

I have a Windows 10 operating system and Cubase AI 9.5 and so I thought this Steinberg interface would be a perfect fit. It even had good reviews on the Musician's Friend site. Unfortunately, when I got it hooked up the sound would drop out on playback. I spent about a week trying to resolve this issue. I reinstalled my drivers and reconfigured my device setup in Cubase several times. I tried using an external power cable, thinking it wasn't getting enough power from the USB, but the dropout problem continued. I fooled around with my Windows sound options too but nothing helped and I was forced to return the interface. The only other reason I can think of for my sound dropout issue is that my motherboard is over 10 years old and so maybe there were incompatibility issues. It was suggested in one forum that I update my chipset and BIOS, but that seemed risky and so I didn't go down that road. Ironically, after I returned the interface to Musician's Friend, I got out my old Artcessories USB Phono Plus and got it to work with Cubase after installing the ASIO4ALL driver. It had not worked before and that was my reason for purchasing the Steinberg UR22mkII. ... More

This box is an upgrade from my presonnus audio box, I hate dealing with steinberg for anything because of poor customer service, needless to say I was shocked when I got this interface to work within 2 minutes of hooking it up, no hoops to jump through, no lengthy registration process, just plug n go. My system is a amd 8320 octocore processor/32 gb ddr3 1600, 2tb 7200rpm hdd, and stock amd r9 video card.i have everything hooked up to a pair job lsr305s.I use ableton live 9.5 and komplete 10, the box works great at 24/96000, eats up some extra cpu once you crank the resolution to 24/192,000, but that is to be expected I guess. Over all its a good buy, and it sounds better than any presonnus, or focusrite box I've tried. ... More
Good hardware, confusing software

The device is solid, but I am completely confused by the Cubase recording software. It is way too technical for me. I can't imagine how anyone without a computer engineering degree can figure out how to use it. I have spent hours with on-line tutorials and even had someone come to my house to tutor me in person. The Cubase PDF manual is 687 pages with 657 sections! I don't know what half of the terms used in the manual even refer to. If you know what you are doing with digital recording, then this is for you. If you are tech-challenged like me, you will be immensely frustrated. For me, this was created by engineers for other engineers - not for the end-user musician who just wants to do some basic recording. ... More

Serious Driver Issues on Windows 10

Experiencing the same major driver issues on Windows as many others. Windows reports "Problem w Unrecognized USB Device installed" with the Steinberg/Yamaha required driver. Have tried both multiple uninstall/reinstalls of the current and beta drivers with same results. The UR22mII quickly loses connection to both Windows and Premiere CC after the driver reinstall process. PIA ! A web search reveals longstanding driver issues with this device and Windows that Steinberg is failing to address. Apparently the "Beta" driver that was supposed to address this and go out of Beta status by now is still in Beta probably because it doesn't work - Windows still reports it as an Unrecognized USB device with both the latest Windows and beta driver. I am using this to feed my guitar into a Windows 10 Pro PC. Drivers work fine, no issues whatsoever under Win 10 Professional and the latency even at higher bit rates is excellent. Very good audio quality! I was and still am torn between this one and the Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD. The Behringer has different connectors for the output which might or might not help in saving adapters. It should pretty similar and costs less than the Steinberg. I did decide to go with Steinberg because it was the one available in my local store and I would have had to wait for the Behringer. ... More

When I discovered my Focusrite was not compatible with my iPad, I looked for another solution. I subsequently learned about Steinberg converters from watching Pete John's YouTube channel. He showed a UR-12 in one of his videos so I decided to follow his lead. I needed two input channels to connect my Roland so I purchased the UR-22. It has performed flawlessly. For the price point it is a fantastic buy considering its quality construction. I'm now considering a UR-44 for the additional routing advantages.

Understand I've gotten used to using an outboard RME ADI-2 ADC into an ESI U24XL digital interface via optical connection. I got this as a backup while waiting for another U24XL to arrive (I dropped the old one and it didn't survive). I like the size and sturdiness of this Steinberg UR22, and it works fine, but I'm not crazy about the recording and playback quality. But it's very inexpensive, so it's a great starter interface. By memory, I'd say it also doesn't sound as good as the Focusrite Saffire 24 (firewire) I used to have, but the Saffire is twice the price of this Steinberg. ... More

Correction of Negative Review Due to Bad Driver Error

After many further driver replacements and tweaking of settings, I found the problem which we thought was a bad driver was corrected by replacing the USB cable that came with the unit. Now the UR22mkII is working for 2 days without problem. So appears to be a bad Steinberg USB Cable.

I was looking to connect my DJ rig to the iPad Pro to record mixes, and found this interface. Paired with Cubasis, it works flawlessly. There are no drivers or anything to mess with - just plug it in, set the levels, and it's ready to record. (A usb hub with power passthrough is recommended.) I just finished my first mix with this setup, and it sounds great. No issues whatsoever, and I can now fit the whole recording setup on the little shelf above the mixer. Perfect.

Im using the UR22 as an interface with my laptop using Cubase Elements 9.5. My setup is ultra simple. A Yamaha MOX6 and tons of plug ins. You may have heard that the UR22 monitors in mono which is true. A bit of getting used to. But then on playback oh my...flawless. This thing is 24 bit 192k and it sounds it. This unit defines bang for the buck. A gem.

Unit is good, using for video production, took a minute trying to set up for recording device, I by passed the mix & phones on the unit because the gains on the pre's had to run to hot, close to max for some reason, I ran it thru my soundcard now it's hitting right where it should, running it thru my recorder I still can monitor & mix the sound.
Broke after a year of light use.

It was solid until I have started having problems with headphone sound periodically turning into a bitcrushed mess. It's been kept boxed when not in use, and hasn't even endured so much as a bump. I only use it for headphones and I don't know what else is damaged.

Great preamps and clean, detailed A/D and D/A conversion that works on USB bus power. Small, portable and pro quality for recording, podcasting or just enjoying better playback than your laptop's headphone jack. Great value too!

It's good for the money. It doesn't qualify as pro or prosumer, more consumer. I was having problems with my DAW that could have been my gear, so I got it to troubleshoot. Doesn't sound great to my ears, but hey, look at the features for the price!
Big problems with MacBook Pro

I was very excited to get my UR22mkII only to find that it locks up every 5min or so and you have to either set the audio device to the internal or the thunderbolt monitor and then back to the UR22mkII to get it to work again. Also unplugging the usb and then plugging it back in works too, then it works for another 5min and then locks up again. Works fine on a windows PC with no issues. It's been months now and still no update to fix this. I wish I could return it but its been months. So much for steinberg support, and this was the newer version too. If you have a Mac with OS10.11.3 beware, this will not work and there is no sign that they are working on fixing the problem. ... More
