I can't say enough good things about this interface, it is crystal clear and is helping me produce high-quality music from my home studio. Understand that the 4k feature has nothing to do with a higher quality sound, it is actually a feature that models a vintage Solid State preamp. This plus a MXL 990/ Shure SM57 and you can record an album.

This interface came highly regarded from an audio engineer friend and was definitely a step up from my older Behringer UMC22. It has crisp and clean preamps and I like how easy it is to switch between monitor and USB out. I don't have an opinion about the 4K mode because I mainly record spoken word and I don't think it's an appropriate effect for what I'm after (it tends to boost the highs which in my case is mostly background noise). I'm a little disappointed that you can't separate the two inputs on my PC -- this means if I'm on a video-conference and only using one mic it's only using the left channel and I'm never sure if the video stream is down-mixing to mono and mixing in 50% silence from the unused channel. I also wish there was either an indicator lamp or the toggle switches for phantom power were a bit more obvious -- I can't tell without feeling for a subtle difference in height if my condenser mics are powered. I've also been quite pleased with using it as my sound card -- I unplugged and uninstalled drivers for my other devices and have been using this as a PC's sound output with no complaints. All said, I wish I'd known about this product years ago and I'm more than pleased with the value for money! ... More

So... I’ve had the SSL2 for a couple weeks and already the Hi-Z button on channel 1 is “noisy” when touched. Not a grounding issue, something in the mechanics not making good contact... also, those little buttons (and the knobs, etc) are a little cheap-feeling compared to the UA Arrow I had last year. Now, that said, it sounds great, no issues with a tube mic out front for vocals, direct with guitar is a tad “dark” tonally even with 4K engaged, my OP-1 directly in sounds fine... just kind of an overall cheap feel. If the button gets worse, I guess I’ll have to return it, which is disappointing as I don’t want to wait on replacement when I just started recording again! Just thought the SSL name would mean quality on par with UA, but I guess at this price point that was maybe a little too much to ask? Beware. Maybe get your hands on one instead of buying unseen online like I did... ... More

This unit has been getting a lot of hype. But hype is no substitute for experience. I've used this - in a studio recording situation - and almost every other brand of audio interface you can name. This is somewhere in the middle of the pack, to my ears. It is clean sounding, and for playback it's very good, with a powerful preamp to speakers and headphone output. But for recording input, the converters do not have the detailed sound of something like a Focusrite Clarett, which has the best sound I've heard. The "4K" button does help, but it basically just brings the sound to what other units achieve without any extra processing. There are other options for this price that sound better. ... More

I have owned lots of great interfaces over the years - if you only need a two input interface that is usb powered this has the sound of much more expensive gear. The 4K button adds the zing you’ll recognize in the tracks of hit records mixed on SSL boards. I use two SSL channel mic pres with black knob eqs as the front ends into the SSL 2 and always have the 4K buttons on. However, if on location recording with a laptop running protools the mic pres in the SSL2 are remarkably close to the channel strips in sound quality. Have owned this for several years now and the build quality has held up very well. Great SSL sound at a price point that is this affordable and highly portable too? Thank you SSL. ... More

I'd love to give this 5*. It works fine.. sounds fine.. works as it should as the I/O for my Mac.. does what it should.. But I can't get over the cheap plastic monitor volume knob that's ruining my experience with this.. it feels.. so... cheap.. like an afterthought.. or probably a major thought to save a few cents on manufacturing per unit.. I would have gladly payed an extra $10-20 just to have a solid feeling dial that I could crank up to 11.. This probably sounds crazy to some who read this.. but tactile feel of equipment is important. And the cheap thin crap plastic knobs on this make me wonder how much else they cheaped out on under the hood. Very disappointed in this. ... More

So most people will get this SSL audio interface to emulate Jack Black or Dewey Finn from School of Rock, and they have not disappointed! When you plug your mic into the interface it produces a clear reproduction of the mic signal through clear preamps and a simple interface. Unlike Jack Black pretending to be Ned Schneebly there will be absolute clarity in the character of the signal- just like Dewey Finn! Now this isn’t a unit you can purchase and just sound like the man himself straight away, you must have the red sg and a bit of pizazz at least- however if you are looking to add a piece to the Jack Black puzzle, this is the perfect fit! 5/5. ... I have used other audio interfaces in the past (m-audio among them) but always struggled with latency. This wasn't a problem when I was recording; however, it was a big problem for me when I was streaming or interacting live. The delays were too much to stay with the beat (playing bass/guitar) or even live in conversations (podcasts, interviews, etc.). With the SSL 2, I can have a dedicated channel for my guitar and my mic all while maintaining quality and keeping lag at a minimum. In addition, I have plugged in two speakers and have been able to play a small live session. An unintended benefit was an impromptu karaoke night over the holidays. Solid product. ... More

I Was going through my choices between this, motu, and the arrow. My finial decision was this. For the price of this interface it should be illegal for it to sound this clear. It's open and clear. The 4K has a nice little "body" to whatever your recording if you are using a low end microphone. If you're just looking to record vocals or acoustic instruments I would definitely go with this.

Def has the same sound as the big ssl consoles. So great they made something affordable for the regular studio. 4K setting sounds so smooth. Would recommend.

Love this thing! I use this for my setup - I'm a video editor but in this virtual age, allows me to turn down monitors and use headphones so there's no feedback or echo during virtual meetings. I only with the knobs and buttons were some form of metal - the 4K button feels cheap but functions does fine.

Spent more than I should have on a synth a while back and wow, this is the first time it sounded every bit of what I paid. This is just the most lovely sound I could hope for. And at a price point barely above entry-level audio interfaces? No-brainer. Easy setup, great sound, no-nonsense controls.

Years ago I had a large diaphragm condenser mic custom upgraded for my voice. I never could get it to sound as good as I needed. After plugging it in the SSL 2 it's fantastic. Click on the 4K boost and it's a sound that sets it apart from everything else. I use it mostly for commercial VoiceOver and video audio. Wish I had it years ago.

I have used SSL 4K and 8K desks. When I received this SSL 2 Interface the first thing I did was turn the knobs all the way up. Nothing, not a sound of self noise. Most Audio interfaces have allot of self noise and add unwanted distortion to your signal. This SSL interface is almost unbelievable.
