Everything you've heard is true about the sound and quality but the output is very low. Even with a CL-1 Cloudlifter I find I'm barely getting a usable signal. Clearly I need to invest in a pre-amp and that's an investment you should add into your budget.

If you didn't know what to expect when getting teh SM7B then you didn't do your research. This mic has legendary status for a reason. It sounded great right out of the box and has added more pro sound to my projects. Glad I spent the money.

Looking for pro-quality equipment with a starter budget...this is the preamp for you. This preamp was provided the perfect quality for the 'at-home' recording studio I needed, plus the guidance by the B&H staff, it was made it super easy to put my system together.

Sure, Shure SM7b is a great microphone. It just isn't necessarily the best across the board. Thinking of returning it. I am a professional broadcaster and the mic sounds great in a studio with a high powered board. But if it's not a broadcast power quality mixer, it's not a great mic, requires an expensive preamp and suddenly it's not that inexpensive nor easy. . So, no, not for everyone.
