I bought the MKH-8050 to use on interviews and especially for use on a show recording the sounds of new born puppies and kittens. Having used the MKH50 in the past this was a very easy transition. The only issue is dealing with the handling noise as Sennheiser has yet to release a shock mount made specifically for this mic. I managed to find a shock mount that works well for such a short mic and all is well. This mic is has a crisp sound and a wide pattern. It's perfect for what I need it for.

This purchase replaced two of my 5 MKH8050's that went missing. They are great mics that there was no question I needed to replace. The Sennheiser MKH8050 (hypercardiod),and the other MKH mics, have a very smooth on and off-axis frequency response, are very quiet, and being RF condensers ( unlike almost all other condensers) are not affected by very humid conditions( no cracking/popping). I've used the MKH8050 on almost every instrument you can think off with outstanding sound: eg kick drum, bass/guitar amp, brass, woodwinds. acoustic guitar, banjo, violin/viola/cello/bass, kalimba, sitar, drum overhead, tabla, djembe, cajon, choir, classical style vocals ( mic'ed from few feet distance). Great for live sound and live recording. Rycote INV-3 are perfect shockmount clips to use with the 8050 ( and the 8040, 8020, 8090). I don't bother with the standard clips-esp. since the mics and the INV-3 shockmounts are very small and this is a bonus for video work. I don't do boom work but many write that this mic is one of the go-to choices for boom mics (esp indoors where off-axis pickup needs to be smooth). ... More

I purchased two of these mics to use for indoor interviews. Previously, I was using the Rode NTG3, a supercardioid shotgun condenser microphone. While I think the NTG3 is an excellent mic, shotgun mics are made for windy conditions, typically outdoors. When used indoors, shotgun mics can produce odd sound artifacts. When it became time for me to pick up a dedicated professional indoor mic, the Sennheiser MKH 8050 was top on my list after a lot of research. I do not regret my purchase. The MKH8050 is a perfect dialogue mic. The vocals come through crystal clear along with greatly reduced room noise compared to my previous mic, even when the room is untreated with sound proofing. If you're looking for a crystal clear mic that is built to last and is proven in the industry (even in humid conditions thanks to the RF technology), I recommend the MKH8050. ... More

This mic has worked fantastically for me in interviews and also as a Mid mic in a Mid/Side rig. It has a very low noise floor, it's very transparent, and it's a pleasure listening to the results every single time.

Great mic to have in the boom op arsenal. The dinky size is great for travel. the Super-cardioid pattern is great for a lot of the run and gun interview setups I do. I can confirm the same complaint that others have had about there is a bit more handling noise - so just have to keep that top of mind on productions.
