Sennheiser got me, I admit. The youtube videos, the initial reviews...I am a film director and producer with 10 years experience and I work with sound long enough to know what good sound means in film video, so I thought it'd give it a try. All these years I trusted Rode and their gear never let me down, so when I saw this product come out I thought, I would give it a try both on iPhone pro and Filmic app and on my Canon XC10. It sounds fine but it's not a $200 mic and it's built quality is very cheap. After only using it for 3 weeks the hot shoe mount got loose so now I have a dangling piece of plastic on my camera making all kids of noises. Will see if B&H has a solution for this, because I doubt gorilla glue will help here. Side note: all of my gear gets in and out of the studio regularly. In pelican cases. It's hundreds of times a year it gets attached, run, detached, etc. Gear that is half that price still works after years of use. I get it, it's not a professional mic, it's a toy. Don't buy it. It's not going to last 2 months. Buy Rode instead. ... More

What a great addition to my kit. A full-sized shotgun just doesn't work for many situations and can be intimidating to your subject. This sucker delivers CLEAN sound - I'm getting zero self-generated noise. With my SONY A7SIII no hint of any RF noise, either. I love the simple but vital controls. One thing is baffling however - WHY did Senneheiser have any sound pickup from the side AND rear??? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole point of a shotgun is to NOT have pickup from rear / sides. WHY SENNHEISER, WHY? TBH, even with the rear / side pickup, it still rocks, and that hasn't been much of a problem. My partial solution: a little gaffer tape on rear to attenuate that rear pickup. Hey Sennheiser: maybe you could design and offer (at very low cost) a simple sound baffle that users could put on the rear?? Please? Even still, I have to give this FIVE stars. ... More

I have had the previous MKE400 model for years and it has been a workhorse. I really liked its small size as my audience was not intimidated by its presence. Downside was that at times I would forget to turn it on. Although its battery consumption was so low, I realized its best to never turn it off. I just purchased this new one and I really like the fact that it turns on and off automatically as soon as you hit the camera record button. I wish the size was not so big. Its a bit in your face and the blue cable is so flashy that it does not help. Nevertheless, I believe this is another awesome Sennheiser on-camera microphone. Highly recommend it. ... More

Originally I ordered a Rode VideoMic Pro+ for use with my Fujifilm X-T4. When I opened the box I did not even bother to take the mic out of the plastic. The VideoMic Pro+ is huge! That, coupled with the gaudy RODE emblazoned on the side, made me decide to send it back. Instead I bought the Sennheiser MKE 400 and it is perfect. It sounds good, the size and weight are a perfect fit for the Fuji, and there is only a subtle Sennheiser logo on the side. I love the way the mic turns on and off with the camera. My only very minor complaint is that the coiled cord is blue. Black would have been better. ... More

This is my third mic and the most expensive one yet. Its sound quality is the best of course compared to other $100 mics I used before. It is much fuller and life like sound than the other mics that made harsh or tingy, more like over the phone kind of sound. I think it is more than twice better than the other $100-ish microphones. I recorded my daughter's birthday party with two cameras, one with this and the other with what I used to use. I put the other one on eBay and getting this another one as soon as I play back both files. Huge differences. Auto on is a thankful feature. I love it. ... More

I'm using this mic on a Samsung phone as a directional mic, hopefully with an increase in volume pick-up over the mic included on the phone. The three volume settings on the Sennheiser are barely on slightly on and thankfully, better than the phone's mic. So once I tested the settings, I'm satisfied that it is a usable mic with a better pick-up than the phone mic alone. I can't figure out why they included two settings that were lower than a phone's included mic.

I had to shoot a one man job shooting stills and video on a tour bus and knew I would need a constant light and a small shotgun mic that wouldn't interfere with the flash. This little baby was the ticket. I got amazing quality sound and the mic is so small it never got in my way. It only used one set of AAA batteries over the whole weekend. I'm truly a big fan of this little Sennheiser.

Improves recorded sound with greater pickup, good directionality and lower noise than the in-body camera microphone. Also good that it is powered from the camera so no need for another set of batteries.

I like that the microphone capsule and suspension are enclosed so that nothing catches on it. As another reviewer commented, it would be better with a metal shoe fitting. This is a component of my small, oral history travel kit.

Love this thing. I use it direct into my RED KOMODO for docu-style run and gun footage. I bought this exclusively because it has the 20db boost which is needed going direct into the komodo and get a decent enough signal. So awesome NOT having to run an external recording device.

It works better in both iPhone and Fujifilm X 100 V than my previous Rode mic. It does need an adapter for the x100 V. The auto on off feature is great.

This was a step up over the microphone I previously used. It's great with both an iPhone and a Fujifilm x100v. I don't understand the reviewer who said it is built like a toy.

Great sound in a very compact package. The sound quality is good enough be my main mic used as a boom but also works great as a shotgun for vlogging or a back up mic. Big fan of Sennheiser!
