Rode Wireless GO II 2-Person Compact Digital Wireless Microphone System/Recorder (2.4 GHz, Black)

I bought the Wireless Go II (Black) for use at an upcoming conference. The most important feature for me, was the ability for the microphones to record the audio to their own on-board mass storage. To enable this feature, the mics have to be configured using the Rode Central app. Rode Central forced a mandatory firmware update to both mics and the receiver as soon as the app was run. After updating the firmware, the app seemed to freeze. Many minutes (8 or more) later, the app displayed the error message There was an error mounting mass storage. What this meant was that the on-board storage was unavailable and any recordings made to it would be lost - assuming the mics even recorded anything at all. Unplugging the USB cable and reconnecting it did not fix the problem. Many, many hours of searching the internet for a resolution revealed that this is a VERY common problem. There are numerous solutions, but none of them worked. I tested on 3 different computers, used 6 different USB cables, tried going through USB 2 and USB 3 hubs, both powered and unpowered - nothing changed. I returned the mics to B&H Photo. Since I needed the mics for a conference, I had to pay for this second set while they waited for my first set to be returned. As I walked out of the FedEx store, I got email from Rode Technical Support suggesting that I do a factory reset on the mics and try again. too late! The mics had already shipped! Fast forward to today, 10/08/21 and the replacement mics arrived. Hoping for better luck, I connected the mics and ran Rode Central. The app forced the 1.6.8 firmware update, and from that point on, the app became totally unresponsive! I followed the instructions to do a full factory reset but that didn't help in any way. I called Rode Technical Support and spoke with a representative who totally denied any knowledge of any problems with the Wireless Go II mics! I told him I'd already contacted Support via email. He blamed the computer operating system (Windows 10). He said if the app was buggy, he'd have heard about it. It was only after I told him to check the email conversation I'd had with Support that he finally admitted that Firmware version 1.6.8 was specifically released to fix this problem -- the problem he just moments ago fervently denied even existed! Clearly the firmware update did NOT fix the problem. The FOUR mics I got from B&H Photo were all defective and the firmware fix did not solve the issue. The rep told me I could return the mics and, after getting them and testing them, they would send a replacement set. He was totally unwilling to work with me in any way so that I could get a set of working mics in time for the conference. I requested a supervisor and was transferred. The Rode Support Supervisor listened patiently to the problem, stated that the latest version of the Wireless Go II mics are *shipped* from the factory with firmware v1.6.8 already installed. He said that the first version of the Wireless Go II were known to suffer from the problems I was reporting and B&H Photo were apparently selling old stock! He said it's also possible the 4 mics had hardware issues! The supervisor arranged an RMA and shipped out a 3rd set. He said he would open the box containing the new mics and fully test them before shipping. They are supposed to arrive by Tuesday (4 days from now). Assuming they arrive on Tuesday, I will have 2 days to make sure they work before I leave for the conference. If they don't work, I'm screwed. I would advise against purchasing the Wireless Go II from B&H Photo unless you can be guaranteed that you will not be sent the earlier (old stock) version of this product. ... More

I was of course a big fan of the original Rode Wireless GO and excited to try out this new updated version. Especially once it seemed that Rode had listened carefully to and addressed the wishes that many users of the first version had shared online. Now after I have had the chance to use the Rode Wireless GO II I can happily confirm that Rode did address at least all my issues with the previous version. Not only that but they included extra features that I didn't even think of before but that I now see how helpful they are. One such feature is the ability to record a backup version of the audio that is 20db lower so that any audio peaks can be fixed. Whereas the original Wireless GO employed a single channel, version II is a dual-channel system, capable of handling two transmitters at the same time for simple, two-person shoots with low latency (3.5 to 4 ms). Use the Rode Central Mac/Windows companion app (iOS/Android apps coming soon) to unlock powerful features and device customization-onboard transmitter recording, configurable safety track recording in dual mono mode, file playback and export, and more. Via the app, each transmitter provides an onboard audio recorder offering up to seven hours of uncompressed recording (24-bit / 48 kHz WAV) or 24 hours of compressed recording, perfect for worry-free backup recording or a fast and easy way to capture sound from your subjects. Export files in various formats such as MP3 or WAV (16-, 24-, or 32-bit float) with date and time stamp information as well as automatic markers anywhere the transmitter-receiver link was broken. Since the Wireless GO II can handle two transmitters at once, it features the ability to switch between stereo or dual-mono output modes. This enables each transmitter, and therefore each subject, to be recorded to a separate channel. Alternatively, signal from both transmitters can be mixed together and recorded identically to left and right channels. Use the app to activate safety track recording (-20 dB on the right channel). In addition to the traditional 3.5mm TRS analog output, the Wireless GO II receiver has a USB Type-C digital audio output for operation as a 24-bit / 48 kHz audio interface. This can be connected to a computer with the supplied USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable, to the Lightning port of an iOS mobile device via the Rode SC15 cable, or to the USB Type-C port of a laptop, iPad Pro, or Android mobile device with the Rode SC16 cable (SC15 and SC16 cables available separately). The new Series IV technology extends the line-of-sight operating range of the Wireless GO II to approximately 656 compared to the 230 maximum range of the original Wireless GO. It also offers increased signal strength in crowded wireless environments. Plus, the system is designed to run both transmitters without affecting the range performance. ... More

I really want to love this mic system, it's so close to perfect. I used it with success on my Olympus EM1mkiii and it works great. I especially love being able to use one or two transmitters so seamlessly. The screen is perfect, the size is perfect, it's very user friendly without the need to read a user manual each time you use it. I just picked up a Sony A7Siii and I was very excited about the higher quality audio preamp in the Sony so I can record cleaner sound straight into camera. The Olympus is not great for audio quality, but it's designed primarily for photos, so I understand. Back to the Sony/RODE, I started doing tests with this new RODE setup and the audio is useless when recorded into the A7Siii. I tried every combination and settings I could manage to get clean audio, and I had no luck. The only combination that improved audio quality was to remove the RODE from the hot shoe and plug it into camera with a 6ft (2m) extension cable. Even then, the Olympus audio was far cleaner. Obviously I'm dealing with some sort of interference issue. I contacted RODE directly, and: R****** (RDE Microphones) Jun 18, 2021, 5:51 AM GMT+10 Hello, Thanks for the message. What you are experiencing is RF interference as the port on the Sony A7III we have seen, is not shielded enough to eliminate the frequency from the antennas in the Wireless systems as it was not specifically designed for use with wireless systems. Unfortunately if that is the case, there would not be a way to fully eliminate that as with the cable connecting directly from the receiver would have to be connected to that only mic input which would not help reduce the noise. Please let us know however if there is anything else we can assist you with as well. Kind Regards, R******* I double checked the RODE website and I didn't see any mention of this issue warning customers that it is not usable with the A7Siii. I understand that RODE cannot test with every camera in the world, however, the A7Siii was the most anticipated video camera of 2020. The RODE wireless II was released in early 2021. So one of two things happened. 1. RODE had a serious oversight and didn't test with the A7Siii. (Low probability) 2. RODE found the problem before they released the GOII, and sold the product to us anyway. Only to state the problem was that Sony's camera was "not specifically designed for use with wireless systems". Sorry RODE, but the wireless system should be designed to be used with the camera, not the other way around. The A7Siii was released before the GO II. Sadly, I'll most likely have to put this brand new RODE wireless GO II on eBay. ... More

Received these yesterday from B & H and tested for a few hrs. The good: clean, strong signal. I was able to put the TX behind subjects back with no issues from 10ft. Went upstairs behind a door and in a hallway (about 30ft away from RX) and signal remained unbroken when out of line of sight. Limited test, but good news. No RF interference in my apt but would like to try in T.Sq RF mess.... Onboard mic is clean and strong, but a little thin. Noise floor very good with onboard mic but with lower sensitivity mic (Oscar 802) noise floor a little higher but manageable. ME 2 sounded sweet. The pres are pretty solid on the TX units... Backup recording function is awesome. It caches up to 7 hrs of hq audio as soon as you turn on the TX units (activated by the Rode App). Thanks for finally giving this to us Rode! By far the best feature... The bad: Not much except no 32 bit float recording. Please give us this in a firmware update Rode. All in all a really well thought out system that sounds really good and punches above its price. Can't wait to get it out in the field and battle test it... ... More

Truly a great little piece of kit which, if it worked as its supposed to, would be such a no-brainer of a recommendation. First the good: the wireless system is sooo much better than v1 which truly required line of sight to work at all. The bad: internal recording is NOT reliable. As of writing this review, I've found both transmitters to be inconsistently recording. For example, in a series of interviews done last week I used transmitter 1 with a Rode Lav on talent, and transmitter 2 with a Rode NTG as an overhead boom. The receiver was plugged into my camera and I was monitoring the entire time, so thankfully knew I didn't have to rely on the recordings. Thank goodness, because each transmitter failed to record during different takes. Really weird, as I know I turned each unit off between talent changes to ensure separate recordings (and to conserve battery power). But the files were just missing during different takes. It should also be noted that the internal recording is NOT 32-bit float, so it's not as fail-safe as one might expect from the sales spiel. All in all it's great value for the money, and hopefully a firmware update can increase the reliability of the recording. But I still wish they didn't use 32-bit float in the sales language as it's not internal 32-bit float recording, but 24-bit extrapolated to a 32-bit file. ... More

When I get it to work, the sound it awesome. I bought all the extra connectors to make it for sure work with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. We do a lot of social media video posts, lives and more. We are also looking to expand on YouTube. The Wireless Go II seemed perfect for the job! The issue is I tried the iPhone port to USB-C port for audio recording, did not work. Customer service told me it's not supposed to work, but I'm pretty sure I just watched a video saying it's supposed to. I also bought the proper Rode adapter to plug my iPhone in via a dongle. I e tried it grey side into dongle into iPhone. I even tried it. The wrong way to see if I was going nuts. I've been back and forth with customer service for weeks now too. Part of that is my fault, but seriously it's just not working how it's advertised for me. Super frustrating when everyone else is RAVING! I just want to rave about this mic, yet there's something off. I can however get it to work great with my LUMIX G7 camera. So for my online courses, it's awesome. I have ran into major feedback high pitched buzzing issues though. I've found I need to turn the camera on, plug in the mic, then turn in receiver and then turn on mics in order to prevent this feedback distortion. If I do it in any other order I get a hard to edit out high pitched buzzing sound. So I'd recommend testing and listening before every recording to make sure you don't have a bad buzz to attempt to edit out. Or worse, annoy your live audience! ... More

This review is specifically about the internal recording abilities of this microphone system: These mics are awesome in concept, but in order to use the audio from the internal storage, Rode requires you to export the audio clips using their proprietary software called Rode Central. The software is rudimentary at best, and does not allow you to export multiple clips at once. So if you record a lot of audio clips, you'll need to export them individually. And the transmitters record using a proprietary Rode codec (I kid you not, the codec is called UGG), so good luck speeding this laborious process up. It also won't mount on your computer without using their software. In addition, the transmitters I received ended up with several corrupted audio files the first time I used the product. This crashes the export software. I even updated all the firmware before using the mics. Hopefully Rode addresses these basic, no-brainer issues. When they do, this product will rock! In the meantime, if you plan on being able to record audio for your projects, I'd avoid this wireless microphone for now. If you work in a professional situation, corrupted audio files and proprietary software that requires a great deal of labor to work with is unacceptable. ... More

First of all I'm not going to tell you how good it sounds or how easy to use this is, because like all the other RODE products I own it sounds amazing and works great. But there are a couple small things that are worth mentioning. When I tried to slide the cold shoe mount of the transmitter into the bottom of the shock mount of the Videomic NTG as featured in the product release video it was a tight fit. So tight in fact that it scraped off some of the plastic on the cold shoe mount (see attached picture). Another possible issue is that the blue LED's on the transmitters are very bright so if you try to conceal the microphone underneath clothing like a t-shirt, it might shine through. Nothing some tape couldn't fix but just something to be aware of. Otherwise, I have been super impressed with the microphone so far, and if I encounter any issues I will make sure to update this post. So far these microphones have worked and sounded great. I have found them extraordinarily versatile. RODE thank you for listening to your customers, and I am excited to see some of the creative uses you all have for this microphone. ... More

But I found myself interviewing people, and that was just hard to do with only one unit. Then Rode came out with this the Rode Go II. I have found it to be easy to set up, and the quality of the sound excellent. What I really like is that the individual units provide a backup recording of the sound from that unit as well. Say if your sending unit is out of range of the receiver, and the audio is not coming through on the video. While I have not had the need to use it, I realize that it is a benefit, to have an extra audio track for a podcast or something. I can edit it for other uses. Very pleased with the quality, and the overall performance of the Rode GO products. For the price, they are great. The units are small, inconspicuous, and I can easily slip them into a pocket which makes them convenient. Easy to charge with the cords they come with. And you do not need to invest in lavalier microphones if you are not ready, or you can use mics you already have. I look forward to purchasing and using more of the Rode products in the future. ... Then after watching three or four YouTube videos, one person put some thing out telling me to download the Rode app and update the software. By itself I wouldn't mind doing that, but Rode should have definitely put that in the box. I think the main problem I have with this unit is the lack of documentation. But honestly, for me, an audiophle, the sound quality is good, but it is not that good. And I found out that DJI makes a thing just called the DJI mic, and I am sure it is a much better product. Especially being that I have the Osmo pocket II creator edition, which has the wireless mic system very similar to this one. And it works so well, but I wanted to use a camera better than that one for my videos. So the mic is good once you get it working, but it's a very frustrating process that Rode could've made much better by much better documentation, a better instruction manual, and even a quick start guide when you buy the thing. One of the most game changing options is the built-in internal recording into the transmitters. Unfortunately, my first set has proven to be faulty and unreliable for this function. I was recording some interviews and when I went to pull the recording from one of the transmitters, one file was scrambled and glitchy, and take didn't record at all. Luckily I was recording the receiver's output into a pocket recorder so I still have something to work with, but if you're hoping to use the internal recording as your primary (I believe it's the cleanest recording option since it records digitally into the transmitter vs using the analog output of the receiver into a recorder which has additional preamp noise) reliability is now in question. I've shot in warehouses and on the street and the clarity has always been great. This isn't a replacement for a shotgun mic though. For the same price you can get one shotgun that will probably be better recording quality overall. The diverse use case is what you're getting the Wireless Go II's for. They are incredibly compact and light, but they don't feel overly fragile. However, I wish they were more weatherproof (you can't use them in the rain). Battery life, in my experience, has been around 7hrs as they claim. On the technical side, the signal is pretty hot. I always have them set at -12db. They clip pretty easily. I plug my receiver direct into a Zoom H5 and the level there is set between 3-4 on the main dial. For anyone doing documentary, podcast, or corporate work, I would recommend these without hesitation. If you're doing more narrative creative work, you probably want to spend a few more hundred and get higher end shotguns. ... More

You probably have already heard about all the good things about this recorder, and I think it's probably the best product for these types of devices. However, the one criticism I have for Rode is that I don't like how I have to go in the app to adjust certain settings. Settings you would normally be able to adjust on the fly with other recording equipment. For example: 1. Switching the transmitters to record internally ALWAYS, or only recording internally when it is connected to the receiver is something you can only do via the app. Which should be clarified, it is an app to be found on a computer, not a mobile app. 2. Also toggling on and off the Pad for line-level inputs also must be done via the app. 3. Changing the recording quality must also be done via the app. Those are the 3 settings, in particular, that I wish I could easily adjust on the fly, on a shoot as a I often don't always 100% know the shooting circumstances to know how to set up the Go 2 prior to the shoot day. I was under the impression there was a mobile app at least, but alas, there is not. So in short, I just wish there was a mobile app. Otherwise, Rode beats the competition anyway. ... More

I was working at a wedding a couple of weekends ago and a family member decided to do an unscheduled speech during the reception (I hate those) and although we had our recorder on a direct line from the DJ board and had mic'ed everyone else properly, one of our videographers decided to run up to the person and clip a wireless go II transmitter on him right before he started. It recorded on the internal memory and the sound came out clean, with minimal background noise and is very usable. We've also used it as a back up with a lapel mic, during a service for the same event and the quality came out pretty close to our other, much more expensive wireless mic. It is a very simple mic but it does exactly what is supposed to do. Out of the box it asked for the update (when connected to the computer, it only took a minute) and was easy to learn (just look for the instructional videos online). At the event it took seconds to set up, was very easy to use, very good quality for the price, specially useful for run and gun situations and considering the price this mic is really a no brainer! ... The fact that the two transmitters can act as stand alone recorders without the receiver is valuable enough. 7 hours of record time in 24bit WAV. Then factor in that the little built in microphones are actually very clean, very low noise floor. I was originally concerned that the transmitters only had two gain level options but after extensive testing going from a whisper to a shout these things do not clip. I'm not sure if they have some kind of very intelligent auto gain going on or secretly have 32 bit float that has not been unlocked yet but it just keeps a good level without being too hot. Now of course you can adjust the gain output of the receiver going to the camera much more finitely. I would not recommend the Paulson microphones however, they unfortunately both had a very substantial noise floor. The regular RODE lav, in contrast has a nice level, good balanced tone and very acceptable lower noise floor. With these things being on the market I cannot imagine why anyone would buy anything else. It's all the benefit of wireless audio without the downfalls. ... More

I have used Rode Mics in the past in my professional studio so I ordered these to use with my new GoPro 11(I also purchased 2 lavalier mics). These arrived and I charged them overnight but the receiver would turn on but could not synch with the transmitters. I spent 3 hours with Rode support installing updates and in the end the receiver would power up but not find the transmitters. I returned these and the replacement from B&H worked perfectly out of the box. I have only tested them with my GoPro 9 and 11 and the sound quality especially with the lav. mics is excellent. The compact size is much easier to deal with than the Rode Go II mic. and using the dead kitty covers on the lav. mikes significantly reduces wind noise. Others have had problems with the receiver not working on arrival and Rode tech support having them update firmware. If this happens to you just return the mics Some must just have bad chips. Don't waste your time. I noticed that my replacement set had a different instruction sheet so I imagine that this was an updated set. Hopefully this synch issue will not recur. ... More

I bought these as alternative to my sennheisers. I love the idea, but the device is flawed in many ways. Overall, I find that the wireless audio is a good REFERENCE for the 32 bit float files pulled from the device. -It is awful at handling loudness. You cannot change the sensitivity on the actual mic- you can only put padding on the receiver. Although something loud may not be peaking, it sounds modulated. I've found that I get the best performance at about -18db on the receiver and then turning up the camera audio gain a little, but it still sounds bad in the loud parts. The 32 bit float files pulled from the device sound MUCH better. -Files on the devices can become corrupt (even with the new firmware). I had a particular instance where I had wireless interference, so I had to pull the audio files off the mic pack. One of them became corrupt and I had to find a work around. Now, it makes me nervous to use these on important shoots. -The software is janky. In order to get 32 bit float files, you have to make sure to select 44.1 KHZ (48 khz does not work). ... More

Was using a cheap lavaliere I picked up at a $5 store to do my YouTube videos. (When you're a missionary you try to do things as inexpensively as possible.) It actually did okay for inside work, but I do some outside videos as well since I live very near the Gulf of Mexico. I will also be doing them on Guam and in the Philippines, so I truly needed a good wireless solution. And I needed the ability to interview someone else and for that to be an easy process. I knew that the Rode Wireless GO II would be the perfect solution, but pricey. So, I told my wife I would start saving just for them, but a check arrived the next day from a church where I had preached a couple weeks before, and it was for almost what this would cost, so I ordered them. Extremely happy with the purchase. Have already used the safety channel since, for some reason, the recording into my iPhone on one video was not great due to the wind. The safety channel recording had almost zero noise. Saved having to reshoot it. I have a Rode Lavalier GO arriving today, and I'm even more hyped about that! ... More

These worked great for recording a two-person interview with my Sony a7iii mirrorless camera. The sound quality is great, even in a windy outdoor area. I had used the previous version, which were good but only had one transmitter, and these are better in every way. The biggest drawback to me is their somewhat bulky size which tends to pull on light clothing. You can always plug a small lav mic into them and hide the transmitter behind your subject's back, but that can limit the range somewhat. Also, on my Sony a7iii at least, the sound level going into the camera was quite high. With the receiver set at 0 and the camera input level set to 1 I was still getting clipping in the levels. I couldn't find any discussion online about that, so I tried setting the Rode receiver to -12db and the camera input in the middle at 14, and it sounded good. I'm not sure if that is specific to Sony cameras but it's something to be aware of. All in all the Rode is easy to use and delivers good quality sound at a great price. ... More
