I am not an audiophile, but as a videophile I work with audio all the time. I'd say my discerning ear is middle of the road. With that disclaimer... I have worked with the ME66, MKE600 and AT4037a shotguns extensively in the past. I picked up the NTG4+ after much debate and without much info on the web. As such, was nervous to buy this blind but I have been very pleased with the NTG4+, the sound quality sounds cleaner and just flat out better (to my ears at least) than the mics I mentioned above. I have been running it with Low pass & high boost enabled in a zeppelin and dead cat exclusively for my tests but this is fitting my needs very well. As far as the battery, I know that freaks some people out - but I've left it on without charging multiple days in a row for shoots and it's still green (it gives different colors when you are at 20 hours and 10 hours remaining and I haven't even hit that yet). And yes, I have had a backup mic available. Seeing as how it can charge to 80% in just over an hour off a little USB battery pack or any USB charging port, this works a lot better for me personally than AA or AAA batteries. All in all, definitely happy with the purchase. No complaints and to my ears, the sound quality is very good - better than anything I've had in the past, and I find it highly unlikely that anyone other than the most intensely critical audiophiles would ever complain about the sound quality. ... I've used this while shooting both indoor and outdoor interviews where there was a lot of background noise, and the NTG4+ did an amazing job. The quality is really fantastic. I know some people are hesitant to go with a mic that has a built-in battery, but a single charge on this thing lasts a ridiculously long time (I haven't clocked the 150 hours yet that Rode says it will give me, but I've seen nothing to make me think that estimate isn't accurate). Plus, the Power LED light will blink Orange when you're at 25%/50 hours remaining, Red at 10%/20 hours and Red Blinking at 2%/4 hours, so there's really no reason to be caught off guard by how much battery power is left when on a shoot. If you're on the fence, check out Philip Bloom's massive shotgun mic blog post where he posted comparisons that you can listen to between the NTG1, 2, 3, 4 and 4+ along with some others. ... More

I am a videographer who was brought up through television news and moved into production a few years ago. I like the Rode NTG4+ for my work. I use wireless lav mics for interviews and most conference coverage but need to have a quality shotgun for ambient room sound back up, especially when Q&A takes place at conferences. So far this mic has been doing a fine job but I did notice that any touch of the mic and even some camera movements will be reflected in a loud bass noise. The mic came with the wrong size camera mount and no pouch which was to be included. Strange since it had a seal so I don't think it was a return. I was not sure I would like the non changeable rechargeable battery but the life is really long so I should never have it die in the middle of a shoot and if I do it is my fault. I would suggest this to others but perhaps open the box while at the store to be sure it has all the proper parts. ... More

I rented this out from lens rental to test it out and see how well it performed. Surprisingly this lil' guy delivered spot on crisp dialogue. The simple interface of choosing lo-pass or hi-pass filtering was extremely easy to do on the fly when certain unwanted sounds or drones would occur. The -10 db switching is an option as well but I didn't need to use it since this project was an interview setting and not really needed for any explosions or screaming effects. I hooked it up via the Zoom H6 and using my Sennheiser Pro 280 headphones, the project went smoothly without any hiccups or issues. Also knowing that a fully charged NTG4+ via lithium ion meant ease of mind when operating and not worrying about whether I had batteries to replace in case. All in all, I will definitely be picking up one of these and couldn't be happier with the results! ... More

Having the lithium battery inside the NTG4+ is perfect for anyone trying to do run an gun filming with a DSLR. I film on a Sony A7s and recording audio on the go can be such a hassle with external recorders, but so far I have had beautifully clean audio directly into my camera. If I am alone I typically mounting the mic to the top of my camera, or if I have a friend, I will boom the mic, and I have had great signal to noise ratio, and I have been pleasantly surprised with the audio rejection from the sides of the microphone. ... RDE never disappoints. Although to really make this package work, you need other accessories, the combination is perfect to start with and decreases the total price one would spend on all of these separately. Despite other reviews, I found the Shockmount to be very sturdy and good, and I also like the right-angle XLR cable for prevented cable damage. As for the microphone, this is an amazingly top notch microphone. With the high pass filter being amazing if you have a blimp or the fact that the settings remain the same when turning on and off, this microphone will be your go-to for the prosumer level. With my Zoom H4n I was able to obtain studio level quality instantly. Lest also not forget the amazing rechargeable Li-on battery that gives this microphone a leg up from other prosumer microphones. Overall, fantastic purchase and I would do it again in an instant. ... More

I used this mic for the first time last week and was very impressed with the audio quality and build. The on/off, -10db, high pass and boost buttons are easy to get to, and the blue LED indicator lights are easy to see. When I plugged the mic into my Zoom H5 the power light turned from blue to green, which indicated it was receiving phantom power. This is a great feature, allowing me to easily identify the setting. Since the mic has its own power I turned off the phantom power on the H5. For what you get, it's well worth the money. I'm using it with the Rode blimp and K-tek KE 79CCR boom pole. ... More

So far this mic is everything you'll ever need, especially if you are only setting up for interviews. But the internal phantom power makes it a little more versatile. Allows you to mount it to a DSLR or similar camera that might not have phantom power available. Great sound, high quality build, and comes with everything you need to plug and play. Only downside is that if you have a dead cat or blimp on, you don't see the lights on the integrated buttons which double as the power button. The battery lasts so long but I've forgotten to turn it off after a shoot and I caught the power button still on the next day. I can see me forgetting to turn it off and draining the battery and being up a creek for the next shoot. Just be sure to power it down when you are done. But overall, great mic. ... More

Overall very satisfied with purchase. The NTG4+ was an upgrade from the NTG2 model. We operate a small video production company and it will be used for boom operation on interviews and sound on location shoots. To date the NTG4+ has met all expectations from the Rode product. The only bump in the road on this order was the first mic sent from B & H was defective. After contacting Rode, and yes, actually talking with a Rode technician to troubleshoot the mic, it was determined that it was defective. B & H was contacted, a return was authorized almost immediately and within a week I had a replacement mic. Thank you B&H as well as Rode for your professional and prompt assistance and service. ... wonderful microphone and at such a good price. Just do a search for the most popular shotgun mic for media creators and this will come up at the top of your results, and for good reason. So glad I purchased this. If your doing any sort of corporate or documentary type work where multiple people will be interviewed, or your on the move this mic will save you time both in the field and in POST. Great audio straight from the microphone.

The pristine build quality and attention to detail must be mentioned for this mic. 'the feel' in your hand is reassuring. On the sound front the high tones if anything are slightly rolled off but with a high boost function get extremely sharp. I've found that keeping the high boost off is preferable with interviews. The built in lithium ion battery is fantastic as you only have to carry around a USB cable which you already have with you and can charge from your laptop/iphone charger etc... Tops remarks for this Australian microphone.

Really excellent shotgun mic for the price. The in-built battery is super convenient (optionally eliminates need to provide phantom power) and lasts a long long time. You can get better quality shotgun mics by spending more money (e.g., the NTG3 is better but almost twice the price) but, if used properly, the differences in quality between those mics and this one will not be particularly noticeable. Much more important to know how to use a mic properly than to buy the best and most expensive possible mic. This is a great place to start if you want to take your audio to the next level. ... More

I bought this for some training videos for my company, and was super excited about it after all the reviews I read. It is definitely top notch audio, but the rechargeable battery in the NGT4 doesn't work. It will only turn on through phantom power, which is disappointing because i bought it for that. I had already filled out the warranty card so I couldn't return to B&H. Rode wasn't much help either. I can submit for warranty but I really need this for production. Overall great products, just make sure the battery works before setting up the warranty info.

I use the product in my 3 & 4th channel of my Tascam DR-60d while running wireless lavs in my channel 1 & 2 inputs. This shotgun is great because I needed a mic that provided its own power because that input doesnt have its own phantom power. So far great sound quality, Battery life is good also. Been shooting a lot with it and no need to recharge yet. REMEMBER TO TURN IT OFF!

I've been very happy with this mic so far. As an on-camera shotgun it picks up interview dialogue much cleaner and clearer and from surprisingly further away than I had anticipated. Its off-axis rejection is great as well. I haven't found out how long the rechargeable battery really lasts on a full charge, but it had no problems running continuously through a 7 hour shoot recently. Definitely looking forward to using this mic for years to come!

I have a mixed review here because I bought it in a kit with an Auray brand fur windshield. Do yourself a favor and buy a better windshield separately. This one turned out to be pretty useless at protecting against wind noise. The fur is very thin.

The Rode NTG4+ is the perfect shotgun microphone for recording high-quality interviews. It has a nicely balanced sound quality with both warm and crisp tonality. Definitely a step above the NTG2 in quality. Its ability to provide self-power through its internal rechargeable battery or phantom power makes this mic a real workhorse in my audio arsenal. Make sure to purchase a Rode lyre shock mount that ensures vibration-free use on boom poles and mic stands.

As you would expect from Rode the mic is amazing. The battery life is so long and the quality is top notch. The rest of the items in this kit are garbage. The boom pole has locking rings for the pole to expand and they broke during the first hour of use. The shock mount isn't really worth anything is wobbles loudly ruining clear audio. The cables are decent enough. Just buy the mic and piece together your own kit. One use is not worth it.

They aren't kidding about the 150-hour battery: the mic was still on the day after I wrapped a 10 hour shoot. It makes a huge difference to not run phantom power on your mixer. For the price it makes great recordings, just remember that any mic is only as good as the person operating it.
