This microphone comes in a stylish black tin that has thick grey padding lining the insides that the mic fits perfectly into. Holding the mic just feels professional, with an elegant brushed nickel grey finish. The switch options are hard to get to, but I consider that a good thing as it won't give any surprises during a session. The sound is a little bright, but not as bright as a beyerdynamic i53c. Still, it was a little too bright for my taste for recording acoustic guitar so I sought out some mods that could be done to the microphone. That was when I came across Michael Joly's MJ-384k capsule - an aftermarket capsule that can replace the stock pickup to improve the microphones performance. This mic went from being a good mic to a microphone that is literally jaw dropping. Easily one of the best purchases I have made for my personal mic collection. When used with the MJ-384k capsule, it has so much realism and dimension. It sounds professional and polished, with a smooth top and and just the right amount of bottom end. When you find your guitars sweet spot, it can sit in the mix with little to no EQ needed - when I have used EQ with this mic, it's been within 1db-3db cut/boost at most. Stock, the NT55 is a significant step up from any budget microphone, and sounds more "flat" than most. The stock Cardiod capsule is great for finger picking, whilst the omni capsule is breathtaking on room micing, acoustic guitar, and strings - for me, the MJ-384k was the perfect companion for this mic, and between all 3 capsules, I doubt I will have any trouble finding a sound that not only works, but does so with professional results. ... I've been recording classical and Jazz Like Styles for more than 10 years and this mic fulfills my needs. Last night I've recorded Voice and Piano with two of these on piano and a ST69 also bought from Guitar Center. I've used a TASCAM 2000 also bought from G.C. The flexibility of having two capsules to choose from is great. For this recording I've used the cardioid capsule. The piano sounded great and everybody was very pleased with the result. Another great quality is the weight of the mic. The price is more expensive than the SM 81 but it is definitely worth to have a pair of those! I do recommend it. As I've said the only flaw are the pad and low cut filters. They are hard to move and feels very delicate... Which makes me feel uncomfortable to mess up with. The manual says use either a screw drive or a pen(cil) DON'T do that that's the only flaw of the mic. The Sound is amazing and I never like to use the filters anyway because of the type of application I use it is either for combos, chamber music and I do not expect to use these to recorded overhead drums. I short is a great buy ... More

If those within the Budget less than $1K ,this is One the Best MP Microphone comparing to my Schoeps , AKG and Sennheiser ( All MP in my studio ) . The difference is less than 10% to my own experience . Its one of the best for recording Outdoor for sound effects and other musical Instruments ( Different Branding of MP Microphone sound slightly different ) . I just love the NT55 MP as the rest of my High End MP microphones , I used for other application either in Stage or Studio recording . Just buy it and use it . Do Not need to compare price point and Branding . Worth Every cents that would last for years of usage with 10 years registered warranty . Highly Recommended ..............Kudos to Rode ........ ... I was about to write that these were great mics for the money, but if you are interested in the room sound and you want to take that step into the world of omnis, it's hard to do better than the Rde NT55 without spending a lot more. I've had a matched pair for years and it holds its own against Schoeps, Neumann and DPA... and I don't mind keeping them in my kit that sees wear and tear. Interchangeable capsules are a plus.. no nonsense, great sounding mics. Cheers!

Getting a set of these can literally cover all your needs for small diaphragm condensers. It's like having two matched pairs for a bargain priced single set. So far everything I've tried sounds good through them. I see myself using these mostly in XY for the cardioid pattern and then using omni as a spaced pair. Using a spaced pair with the omni capsules will get a ton of use at the warehouse space I'm currently recording at to capture room ambience.

recording sound is great. Only thing bad I can say is the include microphone mount. It could be much better, as it doesn't seem to fit this microphone
