I was looking at the NT4 and the AT825. I wanted a mic thatcould record ambient environments well, as well as pin pointdetails for foley recording. This mic blew away myexpectations. For the price the sound is amazing. The stereoimage is fantastic and it's very accurate. Yes, the stylingis funky compared to the AT825, but it's an amazing micotherwise, and it's expandable. Do yourself a favor and getthis if you are on a budget of $500. It already comes withnecessary accessories, so it's a no brainer.Awesome Mic. This mic is a good choice to add a little flavor to your collection. The mic has a rich sound which I like for recording an acoustic guitar. The XY arrangment helps provide a full and clear sound. This mic requires phantom power so don't forget to have a power supply (unless you have a 9 volt battery). The mic is very versitile especialy if you use a 9 volt battery in order to avoide having to use a power supply! The only problem I found is that the mic tends to drain the battery very fast, so I would recommend using a power supply whenever possible. The mic comes with a case and standmount and a windscreen giving you everything you need right out of the box (except for power). The tone of the mic is clear yet full providing a pleasing tone for recording an acoustic instrument such as guitar or Harp. This is a good mic and I would recommend it. ... More

Ok first of I don't write many reviews. So me saying something about this mic means something to me. I was trying to find a great mic to use with my sound devices 702, to record live acoustic guitar/piano w/ vocals. I got a AT4040 originally. That was a decent mic, but REALLY gave me a hollow sound. Lots of background noise, and was not an x/y stereo sound like I wanted. If something fell downstairs or anywhere within 100 ft from me, you could hear it in my recording. So I did some research and found amazing reviews about this mic. So I figured I would order it, and if I didn't like it I would return it. First off when I got this mic, the overall feel of it was amazing! VERY buff and durable, you can easily tell just by the work put into it, the weight, and the care of making of it, that a lot of thought was put into the mic. I hooked it up immediately after I got it from fed ex, and I was blown away. Sure, I listened to many demos on youtube etc etc. But nothing compared to what I was hearing coming out of this mic. Pure brilliance. The acoustics are amazingly pure, along with my vocals surprisingly enough! Also on top of that, comes with a great case, the cables that you really need, 10yr warranty from RODE. If you want a good priced x/y mic, this is it hands down. I was looking at some schoeps mics but didn't want to throw down several thousands..... I couldn't be more happy with this mic. Very excited about my upcoming projects. ... More

This is a beautiful-sounding microphone, and it's provided fabulous results even when using it for ADR and VO on-the-fly. It has a very low noisefloor and captures well-articulated sound. The real bonus is the ability to use a 9V for phantom instead of P48 - works great when using with mobile recorders that don't have enough juice for long-duration and reliable P48. In Dead air roomtone tests, differences between internal 9V versus P48 were quite negligible except for some slightly better articulation of sub 100Hz frequencies. The real plus to this microphone is that although it has a wide cardiod pattern because of the twin capsules, its perceived polar pattern and off-axis rejection are very tight with a long throw, nearly matched to that of a hypercardiod shotgun mic. One can really drill down on what they want to record with this and not pick up excess ambient noise. A fantastic mic for sound effects and recording, and even intimate foley recording in close proximity. It would be great if it had an 80Hz High Pass and 10dB Pad switch, but that's only a minor letdown amidst the fantastic microphone that it is. The 10 Year Warranty is fantastic, a great piece of mind to have. ... More

I bought the NT4 mainly for recording acoustic guitar. I've been using this stereo condenser mic for about 10 days now, and it's perfect for capturing musical ideas with a very simple set up. I write songs playing live in the studio and record to video on a Sony a57 with the Rode plugged directly into the camera. The NT4's stereo reach is useful for picking up a range of textures by simply varying the mic's placement, such as above the guitar soundhole and neck or in a lateral and/or vertical position. The X/Y configuration makes it a cinch to use and there's a nice sense of ambience on live recordings. The front-facing cardioid polar pattern helps to reject noise coming from the rear of the mic. The NT4 is not as directional as a shotgun mic and there's none of the phasing effect you sometimes get from using a pair of shotguns. Regarding noise and proximity effect: there's no high-pass filter so care must be taken with placement to avoid bass frequency distortion. The mic must be secured to its mount to avoid handling noise. Conclusion: There isn't a lot of competition for this type of mic at a moderate price range and the NT4 is a great value. The design is stylish and solid with elegant engineering. The Rode NT4 Stereo Condenser Mic feels like it will function well for a good long time if properly cared for. 5 stars. ... More

I current own a total of seven other microphones, which ranged in price from about $100 to $400.00. They include the Rode NT3, Sennheiser MKE with Cardioid and Omni capsules, Rode Stereo Video Mic, Shure SM57 & 58, Audio Technica 822, ect. The Rode NT4 is a dramatically better sounding mic than all of then in comparable situations. The quality of my live environment recordings has greatly improved since I started using this mic. From loud rock bands to mellow string quartets, this mic excels. Spend a little more, get a lot more. The Rode NT4 is a great mic, perhaps even a steal at the current price. Buy it now! ... More

This has to be one of the better mics I've come across at the mid price point that gets you professional results in the field. This mic is fantastic at recording true stereo (Left right and you also hear what's going through from one to the other, through the centre field too!) and the noise floor is not noticeable in most atmosphere field recordings I've done to date. I've used this mic on professional film shoots for television and film and it works wonderfully. Every custom field fx recordist should have one in their sound bag. Some of the high end mics (DPA 4011A matched stereo pairs or the Neuaman stereo mics) would top this mic but those are thousands of dollars more. This mic, does the job just fine. ... More

I got the NT4 to use in conjunction with my Sony Z7U. I've been recording live bands for the past 3 years and my current setup is the Sony, Nikon D7000, and a Zoom H4N. I wasn't getting great sound with the shotgun mic on the Sony because its a directional mic and it's better for voice only. I was relying on my H4n for all the live audio which sounds great but I needed another mic as a backup. Instead of purchasing another H4N I decided for look into better XLR mics for my Sony and came across the NT4. I'll probably be using the NT4 and my primary audio source over the H4N mainly because of how clear and precise the audio sounds! Amazing audio quality and i'm totally happy with my purchase. Plus it comes with a hard-case so I don't have to worry about it getting tossed around in my camera bag. ... More

I used two of these mics for a concert. I set one high above the choir and another one high in the back of the room, for ambient audio. I used them with a Zoom H6 and they worked great. I felt it captured a pretty full sound, though my clients asked for a bit more low end in editing. Your mileage may vary depending on client demands. I really like that they comes with cases. It's great to not have to buy another item just to protect the mics. They're heavy mics, so I wouldn't recommend using them on a camera. I put mine on lighting stands (I didn't like the tall mic stands for sale). It's pretty neat that it can be used with a 9V battery. Don't forget to turn them on first though! I hadn't really used mics with on-off switches before, so I'll need to get in the habit. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to using these for years to come. ... More

I use my NT4 for nature recordings. The NT4 works well in the field and when combined with the blimp system; a hard to beat combo. Does an excellent job of picking up distant birds and wildlife, with an amazing job when the birds are closer in. - Be warned, it is heavy; read the specs.

Naturally if a person is going to review a microphone the most helpful thing would be for people to hear it. Unfortunately after posting a number of reviews, I found out that they were all rejected because I put a link in to you tube. We used it to record a blue grass band named kevin pace and the early edition.(kpearlyedition). I record them to put on you tube. I thought the mic gave us great sound. I suppose if you went to you tube you could hear this mic.

Only got it last week and have run it through a few test sessions. Some indoors and today used it outdoors to capture acoustic guitar and vocals. Very clean sound. Balanced. Seems to be not quite as sensitive as I thought it might be (needs a little more gain from the SD702) but sounds good. Looking forward to using it more in different situations and seeing what it can do. Purchased on the basis of other positive reviews.

I got this to record music and theater performances, and its the perfect tool for the job. The sound quality is great, and It gives an outstanding stereo separation. It really makes my recordings sound like I know what I am doing. It pairs perfectly with my Zoom F4 recorder, which combines the left and right feeds into a single stereo track. And as a bonus, it lets me record a separate stereo track at a different level. Thats perfect for live performances where I cant be at the recorder to set levels; I set a loud level and a quiet level, and I always have one that is right. ... More

I use to own a RODE M3, which was built like a tank, and had the ability to use a 9 volt battery or phantom power, was one of the main reasons I decided to go with this RODE NT4. Not only does it have the same quality as my old M3, but the Stereo XY configuration is the icing on the cake. WOW! I'm using a Sony PCM-D100 stereo field recorder which has it all excepting dedicated balance XLR inputs. It does however have a 3.5mm PCR input and after a lot of research and aided by the really knowledgeable audio gurus at B & H, was able to determine that the Rode NT4 would prove to be an excellent match and after trying it, am astounded by the recordings I am experiencing!

Need to mic something in stereo? Stick the RODE NT4 on a stand and let 'er rip. It's that simple. Super quiet mic that operates on 48v phantom or battery power for location work. One interesting observation: 99.9% of the time the recording world mics guitar amps in mono but I've found that using the NT4 gives me a more accurate tone picture of the amp. Especially useful for picking up subtle time arrival differences, room reflections, etc. I love it!

This microphone is more professional than i am. The first use, I can hear noticeable better clarity then the Azden mic I have been using. Don't get me wrong, for the money the Azden mic is great, and I still use it. I record and video amateur live music videos with a Zoom F4 and with this mic I am excited about the quality of sound I should be able to obtain with this equipment.

I don't have the money to buy a Scheop's or a Sanken. This mic is a reasonable alternative and seems fairly widely used for field recordings for SFX work. It is less of a problem to set up and move around because the XY micing is one unit, as opposed to two separate mics While not perfect, it is perfect for my budget and uses. Fits inside the modestly priced Rode Blimp, too, for outdoor use.
