This is by far the best sounding all-purpose microphone for the money. I have used many expensive microphones over the years, but this mic is just as good as any of those Neumann's or Blue's. This mic sounds great on male or female vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, group vocals...I've even used it as a drum overhead. The pickup pattern switch is VERY handy, as well as the filter and pad. Add this mic to your setup, you can't go wrong!

I use the Rode NT2-A in a home studio where it shares time with several Groove Tubes large condensers, a couple of Rode NT1-As and a large collection of instrument mics. I have had Neumann mics in the studio, and there is a difference, but it seems to be more of character than one of quality. The NT2A is supremely flexible, and not too harsh or bright for vocals when coupled with a high quality preamp. The studio has Seventh Circle Neve and Jensen style pres. More and more, it is becoming the go-to mic when it is important to pick up nuanced playing or singing. The NT1As are also a good value, and are significantly cheaper, but side-by-side there are worlds of difference. The NT2A uses a better designed capsule, and it is capable of picking up the subtlest of nuance and sounds at once airy and well defined. The NT2A is heavy, so you will need good support, but it pays it back in some exceptional sonic performance. I would consider the NT2A to be brighter as opposed to dark, and pairing it with a good preamp is going to be vital. It sounded no different, and perhaps marginally muddier when powered directly by my audio interfaces as compared to an NT1A. On the Neve, however, it was in another class. If you have the pre to back it up, it is very much worth the extra money to go to a NT2A... the omni pattern gives a fantastic open sound, but you have to be very careful about background noise. Superb microphone. ... More

In my years of recording I have had the opportunity to experience many different microphones. I can remember the first vocals I ever recorded through an SM58, and I can remember the first time I ever heard someone sing through a Neumann. Knowing the vast range of microphones in existence I was intrigued when the Rode NT2-A began to receive awards and nominations from numerous organizations. Bearing all this in mind I went out to purchase this acclaimed microphone, and when I got it set up I was shocked. This microphone sounded great right out of the box; it needed little to no EQ. As far as features go it?s nice to have controls over patterns, pads, and LF roll offs right on the microphone. This microphone is a great value for all of the features and quality you receive. My only real complaint is that the microphone did not include a shock mount, which is a definite must. ... More

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible. Let me bottomline it for you. Having owned AKG-414's, Neuman U87 andTLM103's, I have to tell it like it IS. That is that thismic is not only quieter (less self noise) than ANY other micI've ever used, but on MY male voice is as rich and detailedwith NOTHING to complain about is flat out perhaps thefinest single microphone on the market. It can do so manythings so very well. From acoustic piano, acoustic guitar, male and female vocals, mandolin, flute and the list goeson. There is simply NO way to be dissatisfied with this mic.Nearly any half way competent mic pre will make it shine.Put it on a sweet mic pre (Avalon, Focusrite etc.) and youcan't help but be flat blown away. For it's price there isNO excuse not to own at least ONE......... Problems Encountered: You NEED a pop screen if you are doing vocals as it is quitesensitive to air movement....a good thing especially foracoustic instruments Previous Equivalent Items Owned: U87 Neumann Items I Recommend: Pop Screen ... As the headline states these wonderful condenser microphones are used for recording Brass including all high brass, brass trio and quintets and other configurations. Am using in conjunction with the Tascam 24SD multitrack recorder, a Focusrite Octopre MKII preamp, and JBL 308 studio monitors. The condenser mic offers 3 settings for Omni, Cardiod, and figure 8 settings. These microphones are clear, and detailed and are perfect for brass. Having read the pros and cons of condenser mics vs ribbon, and am glad I went with these for the variety of recording that I am doing. Ribbons are expensive, delicate, and very accurate and warm for brass recording. Condensers are clear, flat, and highly detailed and sound great to me. A big plus is RODE offers a 10 year warranty when you register them online; provided you buy from an authorized dealer. B&H is the BEST and, of course, an authorized dealer. Love these microphones. One last note is this package deal includes a high quality cable, pop filter, and shock mount. Great value for a great mic. ... More

I've been using this microphone to record spoken-word for several weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it! I've paired it with an SSL 2 and together they give me outstandingly clean and clear sound. I'm also grateful for the high-pass filter switches because I'm often right up against the included pop-filter for subtle sounds and would otherwise be fighting the proximity effect. The XLR cable included is generously long -- to a fault if you're using it at a desk -- and I was glad to have a more appropriate cable on hand. The microphone itself apparently weights 860g (almost 2lbs); I'm using it with the Rode PSA1 boom arm which can handle the weight but I bet cheaper arms would struggle with it. I would caution you, however, that this microphone does need phantom power and while this isn't a problem in the studio it does mean you might have difficulty using it on location because there is no built-in battery-power option (my Rode NTG-2 also needs phantom power but has a battery-power option for when you're in the field). All said, this is the perfect microphone for me: it's a step up but still economical and I am more than happy with the quality. ... More

Years ago when I first started pursuing the home recording thing, I knew I wanted a "studio mic". The Rode NT2a fit the bill perfectly having lots of versatility with the polar patterns, pads, and High Pass Filters. So here it is 5 or 6 years and several thousand dollars in toys later, and the NT2a is still my favorite "go to" microphone. I like this mic so much I actually just picked up a second one. At this point I have used this for vocals and guitars, and I can't wait to try the pair of them out as drum overheads! If you are looking for "that one mic" to start off your studio right, the Rode NT2a deserves a spot on your short list, if not on your mic stand. =) Enjoy, -Chris- ... More

This microphone easily beats the competition in features, sound and value. Switch from cardioid to omni to figure 8. The pad is very useful as well. I was so impressed by the low self noise of this mic - VERY quiet. I like it best on acoustic guitar, but this mic is really versatile. You can use it on vocals, guitar, piano, etc. Sounds great on omni with group vocals. This mic really should come with a shockmount though. Other than that, I can't say anything bad about it - add one of these to your setup...you won't be disappointed!

You simply cannot go wrong with this mic. It sounds excellent on just about everything I've put it on. Being able to change polar patterns on the mic itself is very handy. Rode has a real winner on its hands. You could easily spend twice the price and not find a better-sounding microphone. It's a no-brainer for me. I got several of 'em!

I love this microphone for all it does. It picks up very subtle detail and has been my favorite purchase for my at home recording studio. It has several options you can choose with a simple click on the body of the microphone (variable polar pattern, variable high pass, etc). It fits perfectly in the SM6 shockmount and sounds wonderful. If this dies or something happens to it, I'm getting another. I have no complaints and feel happy and lucky to have come across this when I researched microphones. When I tested it at a dealer, I loved the rich sound and thought it reflected the sound I wanted to create. All around awesome product. ... More
