I cannot believe the build quality of this mic and more important the quality of it's sound. Believe it or not this is the only mic in my collection that I don't have to EQ a vocal much or even EQ it at all. This mic is so clean and clear even singing right up close into it. I believe this mic will bennefit any type of voice or instrument. I haven't used it to record accoustic guitar yet and will post a review of the results. Don't let the price fool you on this one. It's not made cheap and it certainly doesn't sound cheap. ... More

This mic was recommended by a Voice Over coach for my deep male voice. Oh, does it fit the bill. I've used the Rode NT1000 and thought that was a great mic, but I LOVE, the NT1-A. The bundle works perfectly, mounted on a studio boom arm in my home studio. As far as the packaging. That came to me from Guitar Center all beat up. (the inner box not the outer box) I almost sent it back because it looked used. I called support they said they would send out another one but, once I plugged it in, No Way was that mic going back. Now I can, audition for those movie trailers.:) ... More

I recently purchased this microphone after researching many different microphones. It's awesome to use if your on a budget, but still want a quality microphone for your home studio. Vocals are noticeably different then what they sounded like using my previous, cheaper microphone. This microphone is ideal for a home studio. Also, you can't beat the free shock mount, pop filter, and XLR cable, which are all high quality. Also, if it is necessary with the mixing board or interface you have, pay the extra 40 dollars for the Sterling PHP Phantom Power supply, because it's necessary for the mic to be powered. I'm fairly new to recording but I've worked with mics that were a lot more expensive than this one, and I'm still convinced this is an excellent mic, especially for the price. I use it mostly for vocals. It's got great tone, it really picks up those low-mid frequencies for a really warm sound. I was extremely satisfied with the results when I used it to record the harmonica. It also works okay as a drum overhead when your in a pinch and you haven't got any cigars. I have yet to try it on guitar and bass and brass instruments, but I'm really looking forward to experimenting with it some more. It records with very little noise, a very high quality product. It comes with a decent quality shock mount with a built in pop filter. This is convenient most of the time for vocals, and it is detachable. However the pop filter is somewhat lacking in flexibility, and you can't always get it to the position you want it in. The DVD is okay. It has some useful tips, but it takes a really long time to explain three simple concepts: mic distance, turning the mic, and using the mic without a pop-filter. These concepts could easily have been explained in three simple statements: I don't really think a video was necessary to address them. I any case, The RODE NT1-A is definitely quality product, and this is a greater starter pack. I would recommend it to new recording engineers who are just starting to build their home studio. For the money, it's probably one of the best mics out there. ... More

It's hard to believe you get so much for the money - the mic, a shock mount, pop filter and drawstring pouch. The high quality mic alone would worth the price. It's by far the best I've tried in it's price range. I use it plugged in directly to a USB interface (GuitarRig Session I/O with phantom power) with a tube preamp simulator and vocal compressor (both by Voxengo) and it sounds great on Logic Express and GarageBand. It's slighty crisp, but can easily be EQed and warmed up with room to spare. The low end is solid too. This mic picks up everything, I bet you could even hear a mouse fart. I bought this to replace the cheaper, thin-sounding Behringer B2 Pro and I haven't regretted it once. ... More

This microphone is really, really good.It has a great sound, the pop filter/shockmount is very beautiful, and the cable cord is perfect. The only problem I'm having is the mastering.Because a high quality vocal DOES NOT go with a low quality instrumental. This is professional microphone, and in order for your music to sound the best it can you have to have professional software and/or equipment. But other then that, WAYYY worth it.

Don't let the price fool you this is a very good microphone. I have compared to my Neumann TLM49 and it holds its own just a bit brighter and has more handling noise (use the shock mount included). You can get great results with this if used properly. As far as I am concerned it is best in its class of budget microphones.

Back when I used a poor quality microphone, I assumed my vocals sounded poorly because of the mic, but this microphone made me realize I really can't sing. Luckily I'm more into beat making. This mic is great though, and I love the shockmount.

Despite the tremndously rich sound this mic can produce (esp for the price), I'm 2 for 2 in getting faulty units which produce a constant wind noise and low output volume. I'm very careful with the mics, and keep them covered or put away when not in use. Kept in a climate controlled room and never dropped or abused. Others on the net have had similar experience...maybe it's production run issue? Not sure what the problem is but BH Photo is THE BEST about addressing concerns and making sure you're a happy and productive customer. Will return and likely try a different model. Use: Home studio - Music and Video Pros: Pro quality sound and solid body with good kit for a reasonable price. Cons: Mysteriously appearing wind noise makes it unusable for the unlucky. ... More

I bought this mic a few months ago to use at home in conjunction with my Alexis Docking station/IPAD set up at home for my own little recording deal. It's a great mic. I use it with Garage Band and It can pick up sounds in other rooms like people talking quietly but with the noise gate on in Garage Band you tweak that to pick up as little as you like. It looks cool but bottom line is, it really does work better than anything I've ever had. Well worth the 229 for the bundle I paid.

So after looking for a new home studio mic (I have the AKG perception 220 and it did not do me well for vocals) I was going back and forth between Neuman 102 and This. Obviously the Neuman is highly recommended and expensive. But this one I was very surprised with. I needed a mic that didn't capture all the sibilance of a vocal take and this did just that. A very true and honest take. I recommend anyone looking for a good intro mic to a home studio, tracking, youtube videos, blogs, whatever, this is a great place to start. ... More

This is my upgrade mic for voiceover work. I purchased this with the Focusrite Scarlett preamp-- what a fabulous combo. This mic has a warm sound that flatters my voice. I'm a woman with a deep broadcasting voice and I think the mic does my voice justice. Something to keep in mind, this mic is sensitive....sound proofing a room, part of a room or a closet is a must. This mic will pick up a ticking clock from across the room AND noise and commotion in the next apartment!! If you can get sound dampening right and experiment with using this mic in different positions, you will not be disappointed! Also something to remember, you'll need a mic stand with this. I got an 8in table top stand that's great, but when you stack the mic and shockmount on top, the whole unit is over a foot tall. So expect to get a larger portable audio booth, if that's your sound dampening solution. My old table top, portable sound booth is too small so I've had to sound proof a corner of a room in my apartment. ... More

At first glance, the Hot Bundle appears to be pretty complete. Plug and run. Not so. As it comes, there is NO WAY to connect the Mbox to the monitors. That requires two (2) 1/4 male to male TS cables. The Pearstone RCA cables included in the bundle are very nice. But, unless you plan to use them for something else, they are useless. Everything else in the bundle is first rate stuff. The Rode mic is magic. The Mbox is very well made and can be used many different ways. The M-Audio monitors are a matched pair and, if used properly (near field) they sound great. The Avid software speaks for itself. Steep learning curve for a newbie but once you get the hang of it, it does it all and does it well. Follow the install instructions VERY CAREFULLY. The Dialog software is great for fixing tracks for voice-overs and narration. I would have to give this bundle 5 stars if it weren't for having the wrong cables in it. Fix that issue and try again B&H. ...now I've got to go through the whole purchasing process to try and get 1/4 TS cables. That'll take another month. Such is life in the Corp World. ... More

used for JC-120 guitar cab, male baritone rock vocal, bowed cymbals, room mic and outdoor nature sounds. positively doesn't suck on most sources. transformerless and sounds fairly neutral, unflavored. isn't a mojo/character mic. not for emphasizing super-nuanced, hyper-detailed, exaggerated high frequencies. highs sound sort of flattened or clinical, but I wouldn't say it's a dark mic by any means. didnt notice much proximity effect, but didn't get a chance to try this on super bassey sources. very low internal noise and a decent output level. you can really crank up this mic with a reasonably quiet pre-amp. pretty tight pickup pattern didn't seem to pick up a ton of off-axis room character for a condenser mic. probably the best condenser for untreated rooms. otherwise, wasn't my top pick for most sources, but the other mics were at least 3x the price. kind of like the SM-57 of condensers, if that makes any sense. great if this is your first condenser because it's versatile and sounds unobtrusive (and obscenely inexpensive!) takes EQ well. utilitarian. light for its size, but doesn't feel cheap. it comes with a lot of accessories which are all high quality. ... To save studio fees on voiceover recording on our crowdfunded project, we decided to attempt recording voiceover/narration in my home office. My office/studio space is large with significant echo; the quality of the first recordings reflected both the previous microphone's lesser quality and the nature of the space... lots of pops, echoes, and background noise. At our sound engineer's suggestion, we bought this microphone along with a stand and baffles--and the difference is AMAZING. We now have studio-quality recording from my office desk. This mic is easy to set up, simple to use, and incredible at accurately and cleanly capturing sound. It reduced the distracting background noise from the road outside (even a crowing rooster!) while delivering crystal clear vocal tones. We love it! The entire setup cost us less than $1,000 through B&H; it will save us over $10K in recording studio time. ... More

Don't have a very sophisticated recording setup at home but this is my prime microphone. Great for vocals, drum overheads, amp miking....very versatile. Very clean and quiet. Can handle a load too. As with all condensers, you need the 48v phantom power. If I were to fault Rode for anything it would be that it comes with a small bag for the mic but the big box it comes in is needed for the pop filter/ shock mount assembly. A little inconvenient but for the price this mic can't be beat.

In building a home studio for voice-over work, so I would not have to pay commercial studio prices, I have been trying different pieces of equipment to bring the noise floor as near to nothing as possible. When I listened to the first tests I made with the NT-1a, I thought I had connected something wrong, since I couldn't hear any roomtone - even at high volume. Then the actual audio content started. The noise of the NT-1 was so low I couldn't hear anything. The title of the evaluation says everything. In my opinion this is a $2,000 microphone for a little over two-hundred dollars. If there is any suggestion I would make to Rode, it would not be about the mike, but to make the pop shield more maneuverable, such as a coiled goose-neck, like the Sony. But I would use cut up pantyhose on a bent coat hanger, rather than to dispense with the NT-1. ... More

I bought this for recording my podcast and the audio is superb. This package made it very easy to do one stop shopping and get everything I needed except the studio boom. I watched some comparison videos on YouTube comparing this to the Rode Procaster and Rode Podcaster and although they sounded respectable, there was just no comparison in the audio quality and the NT1-A won hands down.Be forewarned that this microphone is very sensitive and if you are monitoring any audio through headphones at the same time (e.g. other hosts are calling in via Skype, you are mixing in sound effects or music, etc.) that you will need a good set of isolating monitor headphones to prevent the microphone from picking up your headphone audio and causing a bit of a reverb effect. Also I definitely recommend running it with a low pass filter to cut the ambient noise. ... More
