I use an audio interface for live performance, so in many ways this interface was overkill. The need for crystal clear D/A conversion is not as critical for live performance as for recording. I was stepping up from a very satisfactory Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. I purchased the product not exactly knowing how the increased capability would really benefit my setup. I purchased it because of RME's reputation, and just the desire for better equipment. I was nervous that I was wasting my money as this unit costs 7 times more than the 2i4. But I am happy to report that the flexibility in routing and mixing through total mix has solved a lot of my problems. 1) I wanted to be able to run my mic through my system. The focusrite couldn't add reverb and I didn't want to send a dry signal of my vocals to FOH. Totalmix can add reverb so I now can run it through my system. Having my mic run through my system is important because: 2) I have been running IEM's, but often I am the only one in the band that is. With Totalmix I keep my FOH sound separate from my IEM mix and adjust everything to taste. The extra inputs combined with the total mix software really allow for infinite flexibility. No longer to I have to figure out how I am going to solve any routing / mixing problem. I am excited about this product and do not regret the extra expense. ... More

Everything about this device has lived up to my expectations. It has great Pre-amps. It's portable, sturdy, and pleasant to look at. The sound quality and i/o options are all fantastic. If I had any qualms at all, it would be the following: *What does USB3 compatible mean? All USB2 devices are USB3 compatible, what differentiates this from them? *The GUI for TotalmixFX looks like it was designed in 1998 and hasn't changed. Luckily it works great and is very flexible, but put a pretty face on it RME! *It's very expensive for Prosumer gear... But it's very cheap for Professional gear, so maybe it's a bargain... Not very serious drawbacks, and the positives are too many to mention. Thanks RME! Also, B&H was very amenable to me. I tried a few other interfaces that didn't click with my setup before deciding on the UCX. Each time one of them let me down I brought it in and they accepted my return without question. Thanks! ... Lost my last interface in a plumbing accident. Wanted to go USB this time, to have a more modular setup for recovery from the next crisis. I'd read a lot of good things about RME from other engineers I know, so gave it a try. Worked exactly as expected right out of the box. Hardware, software, installation - all easy and right the first time. After a couple weeks of use, still impressed. Very clean, very solid, and very small. And the included software mixer is very flexible.

I read that RME drivers were the best and after using the UCX myself for a while I can say this is absolutely true. TotalMix does have a learning curve but it's worth it and rock-solid once you get it set up. I get 3.8ms of roundtrip latency in Ableton Live on Windows 10 with a 64 buffer size at 48khz. I have no problem playing my guitar through the instrument input into heavy-CPU plugins like Neural DSP amp sims. I'm not an expert on preamps or converters but to me they sound better than anything I've ever used (coming from a TASCAM 2x2 and a Helix Floor, monitoring through Sennheiser HD800 S and HEDD Type 20). You can look up the objective measurements to see they are in the same range as other respected brands like Audient and Universal Audio. The UCX has served me so well that I'm now looking toward an even more powerful modular setup with the Digiface USB. RME for life! ... More

Ive used a few interfaces and wanted something better and more professional. I won't need to upgrade anytime soon with this RME, it sounds really good and crisp. I installed it in my rack mount with the RME rack ears ($50) and now it can go with me anywhere, but I mainly use for at home with Ableton. It comes with some pretty good visual software for mixing and mic setup, etc. Its pricey, but advanced with lots of channels. I needed to talk to the RME rep about some stuff I didn't understand and he helped me out over the phone which was cool. You can save several different mixing configs and recall them easily without spending time eq-ing everything over again. ... More

After wasting many years trying to dail out the inharent mudd of an M-Audio interface, the Fireface UCX has resolved all my recording/mix clearity and clock issue. So far this is a no hassel device. The software interface is well though out and make set up super easy. The pre amps are surprisingly acurate. I use this with Ableton Live 8 and Pro Tools 10 on a Mac Book Pro. There are no latency issues with Live, Pro Tools has a few minor ones but that is more because of how P.T. is made (inefficent use of host processors). So if you are serious about having quality pro recordings at a reasonable price this is the device to get. ... More

The Sonic accuracy and clock on this thing are truly amazing - but the total mix software required to run it, is not for the casual user. It is flexible but not intuitive. I have spent many hours, today for example, trying to get an outboard reverb to work via SPDIF, when i thought I had it (about hour three) I realized later that it wasn't recording to the mix. So, I tried Analogue, another two hours and it just got worse. So, I thought I'd let you know about the frustration. Don't know why something so simple in protools [send..... return....] could be, well, today anyway, impossible. ... More

I work at a well-known audio company. My department uses quite a few of these audio interfaces and we love 'em. The mixer is flexible, the DSP works well and they are easy to get up and running. From time to time we need to stream audio signals in various compressed formats, which requires a driver/hardware that is able to pass signals which are bit-for bit. The UCX works perfectly for this.

I mainly bought this to get fiber optic, spdif and analog ins and outs. It works perfectly for my needs. I also route into a Neve Portico II for processing (it has a low gain to utilize the headroom of the neve) I have jbl 305 monitors and was about to return them until I got the RME UCX. So, the conversion must be pretty good.

The "one knob does it all" has taken me while to get used to but honestly, this thing rocks. The sound, stereo separation, you name it. Well made and sounds great. You won't go wrong.

This is a fantastic piece of equipment. A much higher step than my old Focusrite Saffire firewire. This one can route all sorts of things together as well as two midi ports (you'll need to get the breakout cable for it).

If you compare it to other High End audio interfaces you actually got a lot for your buck. Lots of ins and outs, 4 midi ports, I love it.
