Great on a budget, very useful

If you've seen any reviews here that turn you off of the 400, here's a couple things you ought to read. 1: I have a Windows laptop that was low end when I bought it four or five years ago - it runs rekordbox just fine. If your computer is running slow, you might just need to reinstall your OS, but that's for another website. 2: Yes, the default EQ settings on the 400 just cut the audio to minus-a-few-decibels-not-sure-what BUT if you hop onto the settings for rekordbox, you can switch the EQ to the Isolator setting, which will make the low end of the EQ knob to be minus infinity, which is how DJs usually use it. Anyway! This is a great controller. It feels nice and durable, all the knobs and buttons are satisfying to handle. This was the second controller I ever physically handled; I spent a long time practicing on TribeXR, which simulates a full Nexus setup. This controller is exceptionally familiar to somebody who is comfortable on CDJs (or virtual ones, anyway). I hesitated to buy it, because, if you seen higher end controllers, you'll notice a set of buttons that control your color FX - Filter, Noise, Crush, Jet, stuff like that - but this one has none of these, just a single knob labeled filter. BUT, as always, rekordbox saves the day - check the box on top to display the FX window, click "user" next to where it says filter and you can switch out the filter for any of the ones supported by rekordbox, which should be any that you will ever need. It's not the easiest solution for on the fly FX swapping but for the price, what more can you want? An incredible deal, especially with a $125 piece of software bundled right in. ... More

So far this has turned out to be an excellent controller for Rekordbox. I really like that it comes with a full license for Rekordbox, giving full functionality out of the box, opposed to most Serato controllers which also require an upgrade to gain the full features. Overall, it feels very high quality. Buttons are solid, jogwheels very stable and responsive. Nice free moving crossfader, and just the right resistance on the up-faders. Everything feels sturdy and long lasting. The controller gives a ton of features to play around with once you get the basics down. There is a ton of creative possibilities with this thing. Rekordbox even allows you to remap the controller, so you can change the function of a lot of the controls, so long as you don't mind sacrificing something else. The biggest complaint I could see with this is the size of the performance pads, which are pretty small, and how close the mixer controls are together. It hasn't been an issue for me, but I have fairly slender hands, so those with larger hands might have a bit more problems with these things. I have owned quite a variety of DJ gear over the past few years, and the DDJ-400 is hands down the best band-for-your-buck that exists if you are looking at getting into DJing, or the Pioneer/Rekordbox ecosystem. Even after using much more higher end controllers/mixers/media players...etc, I find myself always coming back to the DDJ-400 for the overall experience it provides. I was originally a Traktor user, and though I still think it is a great software platform, I have come to really prefer Rekordbox the most. The controller comes bundled with the full version of the software (A $100+ value alone) and is really simple, easy to learn, and fun to mix music with. The controller has its limitations, but it gets you familiar with the layout of a club-standard Pioneer setup if you have aspirations to become a professional DJ. Pioneer, the World's finest DJing equipment and for now, I bought this DDJ400, to see how it performs for beat mixing with beats of greater than 130bpm. It performs amazingly well, creating excellent loops. The pads are user controlled, meaning you can reprogramme them with loops, FX's etc. Using powered speakers and the built in soundcard. You get an amazing powerful sound with nice smooth panpots for equalised sound and volume. The sliders for crossfading and pitch control are nice and smooth. Built in FX's in which there are a fair amount of, are user programmable for beat length. Overall, this is an amazing Controller for practicing your mixing but, there are a couple of negatives. These are: 1: The controller must be connected directly to the Laptop's USB port. It will not work through a USB Hub. So, if you only have two USB ports on your Laptop, you are limited to what else can be connected to your laptop. 2: It states that this product comes with a Software Licence Key. It does, however, the software is Version 6 and WILL NOT accept the Licence Key, as Rekordbox stopped the requirements for a Licence Key with software Version 5. So, if you download the software from Rekordbox, you will receive Version 6. Which is a subscription format and is quite expensive. There is a "Free Plan" but it does not give you full access to the controller. If you look at the plans on Rekordbox's website, it will advise you of what differences they give but the "Free Plan" blanks out some of the better FX's. So, be warned of the limited functions, now that the Licence Key is of no use. I would still recommend this item, but I can only grant this four stars due to the restricted use. The DDJ-400 is a two channel controller meant to be used with Rekordbox DJ, which also comes bundled with the unit. It's got three-band EQs, trim pots, filters volume faders and a crossfader in the mixer section, along with the requisite browse and track load buttons. There are two decks on the DDJ-400, with each deck having a 5" jogwheel, eight small performance pads with pad mode buttons: hot cue, beat loop, beat jump, sampler, keyboard, pad fx1, pad fx2, and key shift. It's also got a pitch fader and a loop section which looks similar to a CDJ or XDJ media player. If you've been using Pioneer controllers for a while now, you'll notice that the decks don't have their own FX sections, which usually consist of some knobs and buttons above the jogwheel. Instead you've now got a Beat FX section in the right side of the mixer. The rear has a RCA Master output jacks, a 1/4" mic input with level knob and a USB jack. I'd been looking to get back into making DJ mixes after a 10 year break and was looking for decent equipment. After scouring the Web for reviews, I'm very happy with this purchase. I've used Pioneer CDJ decks in the past and the DDJ400 has a similar feel and layout to those, enabling you to transition from bedroom DJ to live venue DJ without having to reacquaint yourself with an upgraded professional setup. The Rekordbox software that is linked to the DDJ400 (you have to download and register an account) is also similar to the Pro setup. Although with just the free account will allow you to record your mix, unlike other DJ software. This is what tempted me to go for the Pioneer DDJ400. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than some other DJ controllers out there, but it's a great entry level DJ Controller, just plug into a PC / laptop and you're good to go, and you get a professional level bit of kit with software (that is used by the clubs) included that allows you to at least record your mix, allowing you to post online etc, whereas some DJ controllers are cheaper, but you have to pay extra for the full access to the software. Perfect deck for beginners as it gives a club-like design. Good design and quality and comes with a rekordbox license to get the software for free. From the software you can adjust the whole deck as you want, fairly easy too.

Here is why.........this controller comes with the FULL VERSION of Recordbox DJ. If you plan on eventually playing out live on venue gear, Pioneer has a hold of the market and almost all of them use pioneer. Recordbox is what you use to export your music to use on those players. Not to mention the looping and memory cue buttons (see attached image) are the same on the DDJ 400 as the high end Pioneer DJ equipment; such as the CDJ-2000NXS2, CDJ-900NXS and even the CDJ-TOUR1 which is pioneers flag ship of flagship gear. The DDJ-400 is an incredible value. For context, I was a mobile DJ in the mid-1990s where I used a BiAMP SCM-7600 along with 1200MK2s. That was an investment way back then of over $2500 (outside of the amps, cases, speakers, etc). Not to mention the physical labor of moving vinyl records. Phew. This DDJ-400 is for home use and for fun learning. One of my kids expressed an interest percussion, I can see how she was beat counting during practice. In the first weekend, we spent hours and hours having fun mixing about 3 or 4 songs and learning beat matching. I've just begun to understand what modern features are on this controller. Bought this as an upgrade to DDJ 200 which I literally returned after a week. The DDJ 200 was great but didn't have pad selection buttons which was a major source of frustration for me. The DDJ 400 solves this problem and also allows stereo output directly from the controller unlike the DDJ 200, which only allows output via your computer or laptop, and only mono output at that. I really can't fault this controller if you're a beginner seriously wanting to get into DJing.

Starting out in the dj scene can be confusing and tricky. Luckily, I stumbled upon the DDJ-400. In my first few days, I was able to get set up and learn the fundamentals very easily. All the knobs and buttons feel very sturdy and the added software is a great bonus. My package came in two days which was sooner than expected and I'm happy with how B & H has handled the pandemic. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it for a dj who is just starting.

I did quite a lot of research before buying this controller, and everything I read pointed to this being a great choice for a beginner. The layout is similar to professional controllers, Pioneer are the market-leader for clubs, the basic features are all present, and the quality is great for the cost of the product. It's quite an old model now, so at some point it will probably be replaced with a newer version. But even so, it seems like a perfect choice for now and into the future, certainly better than forking out thousands for a higher specification or trying to cut corners and ending up with a toy. ... As a veteran DJ who's been playing for 10+ years and used to have club standard pioneer decks (but sold when moved overseas) and was wanting to get back into djing-the DDJ-400 is perfect and does most things that you would expect from a standard club DJ set up. At this price point its really worth it for both beginners and pros's alike. Its also super portable so perfect for house parties etc. I Highly recommend it. Argos also was great in terms of ease of transaction and pick up!

Great value for money, does all you would expect from a high end DJ setup. Ideal for the first time DJ with features to rival much more expensive controllers. Cost so low due to the requirement of a PC/MAC to run Rekordbox. Build quality (plastic) is good for the price and platters feel nice to use.
