Great Unique Sound.
MXL R77 Studio Ribbon Microphone

All microphone lockers should have at least one ribbon mic. They can add a totally unique character to a recorded sound and this one is no exception. The R77 adds a really airy and open sound to anything it is picking up. Because it's a ribbon, it has excellent transient response, so you can be sure that it will pick up everything it was meant to. While in the studio, I always turn to this mic for vocals and acoustic guitar as well as the occasional guitar cab. And at the price? You can't go wrong.

i purchased the mxl r77 ribbon mic for my brother as a gift, he's a saxophone player and of you are a saxophonist you know it is difficult to capture the essence of your horn, most of the the it doesn't sound right. Unless your using top of the line Neumann or other high quality mic with a high quality price tag. This mic is a great addition to our recording studio, I've used it along side our sterling st69 and it completes that missing part ive been looking for. I bought the mxl r144 ribbon, it's a great mic but after buying the r77 there is no comparison.it works just as amazing on vocals too, adds warmth, depth, some dimension to the voice, definitely wouldn't need any help from computer enhancement, it has it's own natural sound. If nothing else, this microphone is a showpiece. I'll probably upgrade it with a Lundhal transformer. My first test of this microphone surprise me as to how much output the mic has. Typically not use to that with a ribbon. It lacks high end as a Ribbon does. I'm not convinced that the mic holds its response out to 18k, however, the mic accepts eq very well, unlike some other ribbons I own. The build quality is very nice, however don't expect the wood box to be nice. Both boxes for 2 mics were cracked and falling apart. Excellent for its price range

While not the crispest or smoothest of ribbon mics, this golden beauty kills as a workhorse. Despite its thin 1.8 micron ribbon, I’ve had great luck with this guy on loud stuff, from electric guitars to close micing snares. Really brings a fullness and warmth when paired with a SM57. Not my fav for vocals or acoustic instruments, but I’ve used it in those contexts too. For a nice mic to use add some smooth low boost, this is a steal.

I first tested this mic out on a small, mobile amp, maybe 200W. I could not believe what I heard! It was as if the mic transformed it into a mega sound system!
