I bought this mic looking for an upgrade from my AT2005USB. I wanted something with a little more punch on the low end, the Audio Technica is great for the money, but in editing can come across a little thin. I was hoping the mic would provide a nice upgrade in performance without having to spend twice as much as a Heil or Shure broadcast solution. I'm looking at podcast applications specifically. The BCD-1 definitely has more body and bass than the AT2005USB. I've used it for VO for radio promotions and the raw audio is much better for the task than its predecessor. My only major complaint is that the mic is very sensitive to plosives. It would be unusable with the mic by itself. Right now I'm using a pop filter and the included windscreen, but I still have to be much more mindful of my mic technique than the AT2005USB. I've used a Shure SM7B for radio work in the past, and haven't had the same issue, so I'm fairly sure it's the mic rather than just bad habits on my part. That being said, I wanted a mic that gave me more of a radio broadcast feel from my home, and this mic delivers. Side and back rejection are great. The mic isn't as flat responding as an RE20 or SM7B, but it has a great presence I wasn't expecting at that price. The included boom is also good quality and pretty sturdy, especially as a $20 add-on. The only issue is the XLR cable at the end doesn't have quite enough slack to let you move around the mic. I have to lock the included mount so the mic input is closest to the cable and then use only the boom to reposition. Not ideal but it works for now. ... More

My wife and I needed to move to dynamic mics as the condensers we'd been using (Audio-Technica AT2020 and AT2035), which were otherwise great, were too sensitive for the noisy building into which we'd moved our office. The BCD-1 is a budget alternative to more expensive broadcast mics, such as the Heil PR40, Rode Procaster, Electro-Voice RE20 or Shure SM-7, and so far we are very pleased. Off axis sound rejection is very good, to the point that the mics don't pick up echoes from the untreated walls of our noisy home office or voices out in the warehouse at work. The sound is warm, beefy without being muddy, and with a presence bump between 3000 and 5000 Hz. We use them to record voiceovers, audio books, and the narration for a documentary film (the editor and director preferred the BCD-1 to the ATs). The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is the poor resistance of the internal shock mountto vibration. You can easily fix that problem with a $20 shock mount. Still, if you need a good end address broadcast dynamic mic, this is a great buy. ... More

Purchased a handful of these for on-air broadcast studios. The idea was to create consistency from one studio to another and to have one available for broadcasting from the road - which I do about 90 days a year. Being a huge fan of the Shure SM-7, I'd like to have those in all the studios but it's costs prohibitive. We choose dynamic mics over the condenser mics due to the amount of ambient noise that plagues our studios (air conditioners, cars driving by, temporary hotel room setups, etc.). I've tried to run these through processors and finally ended up just running directly into our Yamaha MG12 mixers (used in every studio). They have a good smooth response but are finicky when it comes to placement to the host. Sometimes we see overmodulation followed immediately by low levels simply by how the host is reacting. This is not what we see with the SM-7 (which I still want to stick back in my main studio!). It's frustrating but really my own fault. I chose to purchase these mics and wanted them to perform like the SM-7 and they don't. They do, however, provide a good studio sound that I continue to use one year later. Since MXL is no longer making the Midnight Purple (which we bought for about $100), I won't be purchasing the more expensive BCD-1 (black) models. Good mic. Rugged build. Not a cheap or good replacement for the SM-7 ... More

I got the BCD-1 as a third broadcast quality mic for our CincyBrewcast craft beer podcast (our others are an EV-320 and a Behringer C-1). My daughter has used the mic on two shows and it has worked well. I'm a little concerned that it sounds somewhat thin on her voice; perhaps a little EQ would be in order. It also is made for use with a broadcast arm, so is a little awkward with some desk mic stands. Also, I bought a MXL mic foam which said it was compatible with the BCD-1, but is too big (I use it on the Behringer now) and, I didn't need it--the mic comes with a foam, which is not described in the in the box section on the BH website. It's a good looking mic, gives our podcast a real broadcast feel, especially during our live events. Also bought in combo with the 2-section Auray Broadcast arm, which is like stealing the arm. ... I found that the MXL BCD-1 Dynamic Microphone works great on amateur radio, because most of the radio's now have a build in EQ to fine tune to your voice.

Performs well for what I purchased it for (podcast and recording voice over track for videos). The only minor complaint is the wind screen fit is a bit loose and it occassionally falls off, if the mic is pointing down. A tie wrap does the trick to keep it in place.

This is a great mic. I use it for recording online courses and podcasts. It has a great presence and blocks background noises quite well.

I broadcast music programs for a community radio station in NW Oregon. Due to the COVID-19, we are restricted to recording our programs from home. Prior to purchasing this mic, I used station provided equipment, which included this mic, as well as the Gator Cases Desktop Mic Stand. The combination works so well together, I decided to purchase my own. This mic not only works well with the stand, I am more than happy with the sound it produces. I'm a photographer and musician, not an audio engineer; this mic makes me feel like I am. A great tool to help me do what I hope is a great job. ... More

I went from a condenser mic to a dynamic mic for my podcast to fix the problem with noise floor and a lot of post editing. This microphone fixed all my issues. For the price you get a well built dynamic mic with a great sound, excellent side rejection and built in shock mount. It's not one of the expensive mics like an Electovoice or an SM7B. So don't expect it to be a $500 mic. It's also not a gain hog like the more expensive mics. I'm using a Behringer Xenyx 1204USB and have no need for an external preamp like a Fethead or Cloulifter. Awesome for the price. ... More

Great all around podcasting and ham radio mic I've heard nothing but good reports from everyone I've spoken to over this BCD-1

I highly recommend this mic for radio/podcast/voiceover production on a budget. Really couldnt be happier with the value. However, we bought the package that includes the Auray boom arm, which is terrible. Spend $30-$50 on a separate boom arm with a longer cable. The clamps on these arms are low quality, and we got two different boom arms with two different packages. One of them is virtually unusable.

I purchased this mic for about 50% less than the list price at this writing ($149 in September 2021). While the mic performs ok at a variety of tasks, it doesn't shine in any of them. There are several better options that come in at around the $99 mark, so before you spend more, check out the other options for your needs. If you are the only person who's using the mic, you can adjust, if you plan to use it for guests, you might be frustrated in how it performs.

I use this mic mainly for VO and pod casting. It is my first foray into XLR over USB connections, and I could not be happier. The kit came with everything I needed to get started (minus an interface) but I was up and rolling in a matter of minutes. Highly recommend.
