Versatile, yet frustrating

Don't get me wrong, this mic sounds great, and having the gain adjustment is very handy. BUT this is a very frustrating mic to use. A big selling point for me was that it uses plug-in power from your camera to turn itself on/off so that you don't end up in a situation where you turn on your camera but accidentally forget to turn on your mic. Unfortunately this mic will shut itself all the way off after 15 minutes of non use, requiring you to long press on the power button on the mic to turn it back on, which for me defeats the whole purpose of the plug-in power thing. I have been in situations where i'm doing documentary work and am waiting for a shot, I throw my camera on and start shooting only to find that I have forgotten to turn the mic on cause my camera had been off longer than 15 minutes. Since it requires plug-in power this also means you can't use this mic with any passive mixers or splitters since the mic won't power on without detecting plug-in power. It's possible to mount this to a boom pole or in a blimp, but with it powering itself off like it does I can't imagine that being a practical setup since you'd have to constantly power it back on. Honestly, I think the regular D3 would be a better option, it doesn't have the gain adjustment, but it also doesn't constantly power itself off either. I've been using the D3 Pro for a few months now and I am thoroughly impressed! This mic meets more than the basic needs of an on camera shotgun. It's standard barrel design makes it much more versatile than other mics in its class, meaning it does more than just live on my camera. The smart TRRS cable has this mic moving seamlessly from DSLR to PC to GoPro to iPhone, even just plugging straight into a handy recorder when needed. The stepless gain knob is a life saver in run and gun work with a DSLR, as I no longer have to stop recording to adjust volume, or use a noisy hard switch. Oh, and the variable Rycote mount let's me put the mic just where I need it for specialty rigs. Charging is fast and the battery lasts well beyond my daily needs. I can also easily take this mic and throw it on a boom pole if needed using the D.XLR. The D3 Pro is crisp, perfectly directional, and just downright works. If you bought a camera recently and are looking for a microphone to stick on it, this is the one to get. Strong RF interference when used with my A7III

This is the second unit that I'm testing, both have exactly the same issue: strong RF noise/interference when used on A7III. First of, I think the mic sounds really great when the interference is not present. It has a very low self noise, sounds very natural, rejects of axis sound well. But when used outdoors in New York City, it catches a lot of RF noise. The interference is so strong that it makes the recordings completely unusable. I first got the mic at Adorama, then when I returned it because of the issue I had to purchase the replacement at B&H because Adorama did not have one in stock. I was really crossing my fingers that the first unit I had was simply faulty. No, unfortunately the second unit has the same exact issue. I tested the mic at both high gain on the mic and low gain of the camera and vice versa - the results are the same. I tested the unit with multiple 3.5mm cables. The issue was the same. It appear that the position of the cable does make a difference in how strong the interference is, but it's hard to find a consistent pattern. Holding the cable or touching the mic chassis also seems to make the interference less audible, but it's not a real solution. I want to believe that this is some sort of incompatibility issue with A7III. Maybe the cable does not provide correct connection that takes care of grounding and shielding of the signal. ... More
DOES NOT WORK WITH PASSIVE INPUTS

The mic is good, but has a glaring flaw that makes it unusable in some setups, and alas, precisely the setups one would expect it to work. Even though it is an active mic with a built in battery, IT STILL REQUIRES A POWERED INPUT JUST TO TURN ON, so it is impossible to use it with passive mixer/splitter unit (which is precisely why I bought an active mic to begin with.) Very disappointing, and a typical example why replacing manual control (like an actual on/off switch) with 'smart' solutions often backfires. I really think both Deity and B&H should makes sure there is a very clear warning about this in the description, as it makes no (common) sense that a mic with an integrated power source should require external powering. ... I got a fine result from this in the Fuji XT-3. The Fuji sound is usable (24bit/48khz), and the Deity is so quiet that if you are in a rush post-production might be minimal. The trick is to set the camera's own mic volume down to nearly zero and let the Deity gain dial do all the work. Sweet result. Also, if you have a Fuji, use a standard cable (not the TRRS) - this makes the Deity usable. My own intention is to use this for best quality camera audio to sync separately recorded sound in post-production (i.e., sound recorded in a MixPre 3 ii once I can afford one!) - and to have the camera audio be a backup at the same time (rather than just going with the internal mic as a scratch track for syncing purposes only). However, I think the result is quite good already and I intend to use it a few times as my main audio for a month or three. Only qualifier: the setup I describe means that adjusting the input volume will be clumsy, since you will be relying on the dial that's on the microphone hanging over the talent! I bought this microphone after reading what appeared to be an independent review that rated it higher than the Rode Video Mic. I'm glad I did. This mic sounds fantastic! I recorded a short fifteen minute video with this mic attached to my Nikon D800 and a Rode NTG-2 connected to my H4n recorder. Until now I would use a clap to sync the H4n audio in post but this time I found the audio recorded by my camera sounded better than the audio recorded by the H4n. I didn't use the external audio. The audio in camera was more than sufficient quality for my voice. I will next compare the Deity and NTG-2 feeding the H4n. If I find the Deity still sound much better I will buy a second one and use them with the H4n to record external audio. I have no reservation recommending this microphone to anyone considering a camera mounted microphone. I saw an online review and purchased the mic for a shoot the same week. I mounted the mic on my Sony PXW z90 that was used on a Ronin S gimbal. What sold me was the dial volume control and the shorter profile. I usually use a Rode NTG-3 on the Sony Z90 but did not want the weight nor the length while on the Ronin. With the Deity v-Mic D3 I got good audio from a group shot at 25 feet. Granted it was not critical dialog but I would not hesitate to use this on a single cam interview. Beats the heck out of onboard mics. Pros: Light weight, low cut filter choice helpful, dial volume control great (used on a low setting of 3 when paired with the cameras VU control. It is also compact and the TRRS connector will work with iphone inputs. Battery life lasted at least 5 hrs and had more to spare. It was also decent in the wind with included foam wind screen. Cons: Must be charged and doesn't use regular AA or AAA bats. Have to remember to shut it off by holding the on/off button until light goes out or it will use up the battery. ... More

The Deity D3 V-Mic Pro is a great on camera mic, but it also works well as a backup shotgun mic. For low budget clients it's a great solution to use for a high budget look using a shotgun and boom pole but leaving your more expensive gear at home. I've had a chance to use this with GH5, X-T3 and Pocket 4K with impressive results!

For iPhone users, this is just about the perfect mic. iPhone preamps are underpowered for many mics and the Deity has Gain with an adjustment dial up to +20db. The trick is getting iPhones to register that the Mic is plugged into the headphone jack/lightning adapter and switching to that source. Turn on the Deity mic first by holding down the Low-Cut Filter 150/75 button for 2 seconds. Plugin the TRRS to TRRS cable to the Mic and then to the iPhone. Since you can't monitor the audio without a special adapter, the best way to know if the mic is working and at the right level is to use a third-party app such as filmicpro wich will show you audio levels and if the exter mic (listed as Headset Mic on iPhone) is in use. ... Great design, sounds and works well. Like many people, I bought this mic enjoy a more seamless battery experience. The problem is that even when powered off, the D3 Pro battery drains within a few days. I could understand a month, or even a few weeks. I want to have a camera that's ready to go which means I need to charge the D3 every two days. This is a deal breaker for me, though maybe fine for others. The precision of the gain control is beautiful, allowing me to fine tune output for diverse situations, such as video conferencing, location shooting mounted on camera, or monologue recordings in controlled environments. When I monitor the sound coming out of this thing on Austrian Audio Hi-X55, and fine tune the content in post I am amazed at the sound quality and price point. It's built like a tank, and the battery life is insanely good. I've been using it for four months straight, 5 days per week, 8 hours a day for video calls, and haven't had a single battery failure. As a professional photographer and sometimes independent film maker, I am all about products which can suit multiple purposes. The V-Mic D3 Pro is one of those products. The D3 Pro has a clean and neutral sound (unlike the RODE) and a very clean preamp. The internal battery is strong and charges fairly quickly. The mic is equally at home mounted to the camera as it is boomed out over a subject. This is not a one-trick pony. I strongly recommend this mic and most of the other products from Deity.

I saw some positive reviews online for this mic, and I completely agree. Easy to learn and use, and has great sound. We've been struggling with the sound on our videos recently and this microphone seems to be the answer. I will mainly use it on a boom pole, but it is also the first mic I have used that, when placed on a DSLR hot shoe, does NOT pick up noises or feedback from the camera itself. Something nobody else mentioned yet .... When I Recorded motorbike action clips i was astonished by the low Khz deep-bass sounds this mic is capable of recording accurartely (from their KTM-Akrapovic) compared to my std Sony audio which has no bass. When i play the recording back over my amp+subwoofer the difference is between the two is seriously sick. It's also very good at focusing sound from the front (and excluding side and rear audio). Super happy with it. B&H shipped it to me in Australia DHL on a Fri and it arrived on Mon! amazing...

When we installed the microphone in the studio we did some test shots with two other sound pickup devices. The richness of the sound blew the others away. We use it as a boom microphone and we could not be happier. Also we purchased the one with a gain adjustment knob. Good thing because the normal setting of 6 was not the best for us. We did a live ten count while adjusting the gain for the director who was wearing headphones plugged directly into the camera. The ability of this mic to record deep loud bass sounds amazed me... I like to shoot footage of motorbikes fitted with very expensive acoustic Akrapovic exhausts which enhance deep bass sounds. Far far exceeded my previous Sony Mic. In comparison tests i was gobsmacked at the difference and the 100% lifelike reproduction of bass. I was considering a Rode Video mic but heard a review about this mic that made me decide to go with this one. A built-in rechargeable battery and a smooth non-stepped gain control adds to the confirmation I made the right choice. I use it mounted to the top of my D800 to record audio for simple videos and for the scratch track for the more complicated video shoots. I am not sorry I bought it. This is the audio quality and reliability I've been looking for. And it came with a hard case to keep it safe. Id highly recomend at least on D3 Pro in your kit. I know its 100 bucks just to add the gain knob, but its wort it to have precise control of your audio on any set. If you have at least one D3 Pro, you can add the regular D3 to your kit for additional mics. This will always be my main audio tool

I've had professional interviews done with just this mic and did not have to do much to it in post. Having the high pass filters plus a dead cat almost completely eliminates wind noise and the sound is very flat coming out of the mic. Not boomy or bassy or glassy and brittle. Voices, male and female, sound right, and gives you a lot of freedom in post when working with it. If this one dies I'm buying another one immediately.
