My daughter picks up the camera, turns it on and points it at me saying Hey dad, what's this fuzzy grey thing on the camera?. We talk for a minute about it.I play it back on the HDMI into my surround sound system and my wife turns around when she hears my daughters voice thinking she's in the room behind her. It's that clear. The sound is noticeably better than the built in mics. Now if I could just find editing software that doesn't convert the 5.1 to 2 channels when it is imported.... this seems to be an emerging function in the software business. Beware that most vendors don't clearly say what they actually do with sound when it is imported with the video. It is also better built than it looks. I already had a young nephew pick up the camera by the SM-V1, wave it at me and say this is a pretty neat toy. I don't recommend doing this, but it survived the abuse.By the way, the windguard dead cat works very well outdoors in windy conditions. ... More

This mic is compact, lightweight and easy to use. It uses the Mini Advanced Shoe on your camera, but is not 100% compatible with all cameras with mini advanced ports. I have an HFS10 and cannot change between mic modes of shotgun, or 5.1. When I purchased there was not a lot of info on this product so I took a chance that it worked because of the mini advanced shoe. Check to see if your camera is compatible.

I use this on my HF-S20. It's fairly small and light and I like the fact that it comes with a dead cat. I use final cut pro as an editor and the sound comes in as stereo, not 6 discreet channels. Still looking for a way to get 5.1 in my finished movies. It is fairly sensitive, a good thing. It is also fairly fragile. I am very careful with it while mounted on the camera as the hot shoe mount is very thin plastic. If you use your camera as a player (using HDMI out) it is reproduced as 5.1. The sound is better than average and the dead cat is fairly effective. Overall I'd say that it is a nice option but slightly overpriced. I had intended to use my rhode stereo mic but would have needed an adapter for the hot shoe which would have made it very unwieldy. ... More

I bought this mic after doing a ton of searching, there wasn't much information about it but i figured it would be a good investment. ... was very easy to set up on the camera. The firmware updated quickly with the provided SD card and the microphone works like a dream. I found out that there are 3 modes, 5.1 channel, shotgun and zoom mic. They all work very well. The wind sock is very very effective at reducing any wind noise. Overall i'm very happy with my purchase.

I use this with the Canon Vixia HF M40 to shoot railroad video. This is my second one as it is very delicate but the first one took a beating and lasted two years. It's windy where I live so an external mic with a wind muffler is required and this works nicely. It also happens to be cheaper than compatible 2 channel mics.

This microphone has better sound quality than the standard built in mic on the camcorder. It also captures in surround sound, although it's more like 4.1 channels (since the center channel in movies is dialog, so the center channel doesn't apply in the real world). It works the best for home videos/vacation when you are walking around and in the middle of the action. However, it is a bit expensive for what it does. The base of the mic does seem like it can break easily if not carefully handled.

This microphone, not only cute and fuzzy, but collects and distributes great quality sound. It really captures your surrounded. Wish it came with a carrying case though.

What a difference this makes. If you have a home theater speaker system, this is a must. Without it, the sound is flat coming from 2 front speakers. With it, the rear speakers kick in to give a more rich full sound.

Just be careful of making any noise since it has the rear mics!

I use this with the Canon Vixia HF M40 to shoot railroad video. It seems to improve the sound quality over the built in mic though I haven't tried it out on a windy day. It does appear to be rather delicate so I would recommend being very careful.

I have bought the microphone for using with my Canon Vixia HF G10 camcorder.I have used it for record live music and I'm very satisfy of it. Vixia HF G10 have a good internal microphone, but with SM-V1 the quality of sound is better.

I've attached the microphone to enhance to sound gathering from stereo to 5.1 surround sound. With the included wind cuff, the reception was exceptional. worth the added expense.

The sound is supper clear and gives a nice 'full' coverage via it's 5 channels. I don't find anything negative to say as regards this Canon mike. Always GREAT service from B&H Photo. Thanks.
