Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone Review

Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone

This microphone is great: I use it for floor toms, bass drums, saxophones, and guitars. For floor toms, you get a great punchy sound, and it picks up more of your ambient drum noise (more of the overtones, rather than JUST picking up the attack). For bass drums, I like this for jazz, indie, soft rock, etc- genres where you want the bass drum to be a pop, rather than a huge bassy thud (the Audix D6 is fantastic for that). It'll pick up your 18-20 inch bass drum nicely, and it can tame a muddy 22+ incher. Now what I didn't expect was the glorious tone I get using this mic for saxophones- it really lets the saxophones character shine through (whereas an SM57 type microphone seems to suck some of the low-mid from it), and for live applications it seems to outshine every other instrument mic i've used. For guitars, this is great for thick, low-midrange tones (think Les Paul through Marshall), and paired with an i5 or an SM57, you can do some great blending (try hard stereo, one mic in each ear). Overall, I'm impressed with this microphone; it's proven it's not just a one trick pony, like many drum-optimized microphones. ... More

Perfectly voiced for floor toms, I prefer the D6 on kick but even there it's not a bad mic. This mic does work better for bass guitar than the D6 since it has a slightly more neutral character. I own an i5 for my snare, D2's for my rack toms, D4's for my floor toms, and D6 for my bass drum. I couldn't be happier, especially for the money. I also own a set of comparibly priced Sennheiser mics that I can use on drums (e602, e604, e609) and those are also good but personally I prefer the Audix sound. I also like the fact that Audix voices their mics to specific drums, since rack toms need different EQ than say a floor tom or snare drum. I don't usually use any EQ with any of my Audix mics unless the room is really bad and I have to get rid of feedback. If you are searching for a great floor tom sound check this out today. ... More

Bought the Audix D4s and Sennheiser E604s to get a better sound than my SM57's on toms. The E604 did sound quite better, fatter and punchier than the 57, then the D4 sounded even more so than the 604 !!! Both mics are awesome in size and placement. Completely out of the way for studio and live use. The 604 is plastic but the D4 is metal and built like a tank ! Looks beautiful as well. I then put a D4 on the snare and OMG !!! Blew away my 57 or 58 which were great to begin with..D4 gave the same result,.fatter and punchier !!! So I now have D4's on snare and all my toms tops and I put the 604's on the bottom tom heads, The D4 is a little more costly than a 57 or 604, but well worth the difference in cost,,,It's performance far outweighs the difference in cost, it was a no brainer for me. ... I love the D4. If I had had experience with it before buying D2s, I would have all D4s for toms. 421s are the standard tom mic, and they do sound great. But they are BIG mics, which can be tough to fit into a tightly packed kit, and they have a cardioid pickup pattern, so you get a lot of bleed. The D4 is hypercardoid, so you pick up more of what you want and less of what you don't, in a little package that renders a huge sound. We have 5 421s at the studio, but I reach for the D4 first. Love 'em. Mics don't have to be expensive to be good. You can buy two D4s for the price of a 421 and have some money left for cabling. I have never tried one on kick. ... More

Excellent for live double bass

Micing the double bass can be tricky, but this has proven to be an inexpensive solution for getting a great live acoustic bass sound- everything I want to capture is there, without adding any additional qualities inherent in piezo pickup systems. Punchy lows when you want it, without being uncontrollably boomy; inexpensive; lightweight and unobtrusive; rejects unwanted nearby sound sources; resists feedback; with the Audix inline XLR transformer, this dynamic works perfectly with any instrument amplifier.

A great level of quality at still an affordable price . The Audix D4 performs great on smaller bass drums but mounted on a floor tom is where this mic really truly shows it's level of quality and value . I've used several other drum mic's in the studio and this one is truly a gem , especially for it's very affordable price . Holds it own no doubt about it when compared to a beta 56 and actually has even a slightly smaller overall size . Pair it up with an Audix D-vice flexible gooseneck drum mount and have endless positioning options for mic placement on your drumkit . ... More

I've used the Audix D4 for years as a kick drum mic after it quickly became my favorite. I've found that placing it halfway into the hole of the front skin of a kick gives it just the sound I'm looking for. Depending on the characteristics of mic placement and the drum itself you may find yourself needing to boost the low end of your EQ just a bit, but this mic has never failed to satisfy.

It's killer. After making do with an assortment of SM57s, i5s, e604s for a few years, I recently picked up one of these along with a three pack of D2s for my 4 toms (10, 12, 14, 16). It sounds huge. The low end response is super nice. I will probably upgrade another one of my D2s so I can have a D4 on both the 14 and 16.

Simply you must put the mic and start to hear a powerful and rich sound with an excellent transient, its capacity to capture the whole sound without distortion is amazing, you will not need almost eq. Great on toms, kick, bass cabinet and percussions too.Not is very good for acoustics guitars and voices.
