I've just begun using it, but like its being more compact than my Rode NTG2 mic that sticks out farther and takes up more room atop my Canon camcorder. I also love the fact, unlike most of other competitive products, it actually has a green light to show the battery is good, PLUS an off-on switch, AND an option for stereo. So far it has worked like a champ. I'm beginning to use it more than my broadcast quality Rode NTG2. The only negative thing I can think of so far is the connecting cable is built in, so if something were to go wrong with it, after the warranty is up, would I be out of luck and just get a Sorry, Charlie from the manufacturer? On the other hand, my NTG2 has had two out of three cables go bad, and I just ordered another one, but at least the big liability in cost of the shotgun mic is not at risk. ... More

I needed an on-camera mic for my GH4 on a run-n-gun documentary. I went with this mic because of previous success with their 875R short shotgun. The on-camera 8024 mic worked great in both stereo and the more directional mono position. I was concerned I might need more gain on the mic but its 0db setting was plenty powerful, and with the GH4 turned down to -12db. This is an excellent product and I will continue to look at AT products for their performance and value.

This is a good mic with mid/side stereo and low cut options. The sound is decent but don't expect blockbuster quality. Comparing it to the poplar Rode Videomic NTG, this thing is more versatile being a mono/stereo mic. For me it is an easy camera mount mic to record stereo ambiences and background along with the video when I'm doing some sort of vlog or video diaries. I find it more useful than the more popular Rode Video Mic NTG but doesn't have modern design features such has removable cable and it's not as well advertised. Sound wise it's on the same ballpark with Rode and Diety. I will not use these type of mics for professional dialogue or sound work. However, with mid/side stereo and a bit of eq in post, I can capture good background audio and ambience when I don't have the opportunity to bring proefssional dedicated recorder/mixer and mics. I think this is the perfect mic if you are a vlogger or if you like to capture scenery with your mirrorless camera with ambient background. You can also get decent dialogue sound with proper mic techniques. ... More

I got the AT8024 just before going on a trip where I am shooting surfing scenes. Lots of wind, motion, etc. and the mike is doing a great job. Picks up ambient sounds like birds in early morning, rain falling, and is excellent with voices as well. Really easy to use, very portable and lightweight, and only uses one AA battery. Great mike for travel and I'll see how it does over time.

As a GH4 shooter, I don't know how I did without this. It's so easy to use and if the sound gets too loud there is a switch to pad the volume down two levels. With the GH4 I shoot with the camera audio set as low as it goes and with loud sound I'm still peaking. With the Audio-Technica switch I'm not peaking. And the shotgun setting is fairly decent. I also have the Zoom H6 which works great too, but it's very cumbersome for run-n-gun shooting. I am glad the B&H salesman suggested this unit. Thanks B&H.

I dont know why I see Rode with so many functional and gripping disabilities is still so famous and widely in use- when this thing is available. It's been 6 months I have not changed the mic's 1 AA battery and still working good.

I wrote a review a month ago satisfied with the overall sound quality. Since then the shoe mount plate (which is plastic) has literally disintegrated. I had only put it on the camera a few times to test. I traveled to France ready to use the mic and just discovered the broken shoe mount. I need to add that I did not bump or drop or otherwise give a shock to the mic. This is a really big disappointment for something worth more than a toy. Being in France now, I cannot return it. . .

I use this with my Canon camcorder. Way better than then the internal microphone. Very easy to use. I like the selectable Stereo and mono option.

I've used Rode Mics before and the quality of this mic matches up and has a few unique features in this price range. I do a lot with music so I love the stereo feature. The AA battery is more preferential for me than a 9v, so that's another great feature. All in all, I've been really pleased with this mic.

First off the Fuzzy Windscreen has a bad case of shedding! And tiny furry bits are tragic inside any Microphone. Decent Sound although needs to be polished in post. No headphone jack on the AT is stupid.. as many earlier DSLR's don't have Headphone jacks. I love its size. Seems that everything made today for DSLR's as far as add ons are really for Camcorders. This Mic fits a DSLR nicely and is actually light weight.. Again, good Stereo or Mono plus switching allowed between the two, on board limiters if not doing that in-camera. I had to push plus 2 DB in my GH-4 to make sure I got enough loudness in both channels. Good split.. the shoe mount yes I agree is cheap and with hours of pulling on and off will probably break. Mini Phone Plug should be gold plated but it is not. So far my AT Wireless System is best suited for my GH-4 but for sit down quick testimonials for Docs, nice Microphone. Its a wait and see on battery life.. takes a single AA. Love that too.. 4 solid stars. Thanks AT and B&H for a great deal! @JEV1A ... More

I read reviews of many mics before settling on this audio-technica and was a bit apprehensive about the sound quality. It goes without saying that any external mic sounds better than an in-camera mic, but still, I was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. I use it in combination with a Sony a6500 and I find the sound sufficiently rich with good rendition of bass and overall quality. I could compare it with an audio -technica shotgun AT835B and with a RODE SVM mic and found it of near similar quality. The sound is richer than that of a zoom H1 going through the camera. I am pleased overall, but I am an amateur/semi-pro videographer and did not do any technical comparisons. ... More

A little expensive for what it is, especially considering you have no option to manipulate the stereo field in post, which is one of the main points of using a mid-side config. IMHO, every mid-side combo mic should output the individual channels, with internal matrixing as an option. Would've made this mic a hands-down winner. Other than that, it's a quality mic and the inclusion of a furry windscreen is appreciated.

It can do mono and stereo, I don't need to switch mic for different usage. The sound and build quality is very good. I compare tho to Rode Stereo mic and buy this one since the sound and especially the build quality is better.

I ordered this microphone before I left NAB 2015 and I'm happy with it. It sounds so much better than the onboard DSLR mic and I just wanted something that would give me better nat sound and not pick up any camera sounds. I wish the fuzzy fit over the top of the foam windsock just so I didn't have to seperate them and possibly lose it.

The AT8024 exceeded my expectations. I new Audio-Technica makes great mics for the price and this is another great add on to my Audio-Techica collection, (AT3035, AT4040, & At4041). I use the AT8024 with my Panasonic HC-V770 high definition camcorder. WOW! Huge improvement over the internal mic in the camera. I now can use my camera more confidently with knowing that my audio will be pro sounding. I use to mic my videos with a condenser plugged into my apogee duet 2 with Logic X. Now I can be more free to record with similar audio quality. WOW… is all I can say! ... More

I purchased this mic along with a $70 Audio Technica mic. The level of background noise from this mic is noticeably lower, however there is still some background interference, which is why I can't give this 5 stars. All in all though, it's a good mic, and I particularly like the solid build quality. More sturdy than the Rode.

I am far from an expert on the audio quality of microphones. For me the most important aspect of this microphone is that it does not interfere with my use of the viewfinder when mounted on my camera's hot shoe. Many microphones for SLR's and Mirror-less cameras hang over much to far to the rear when mounted on the hot shoe. This one does not. The sound is much better than that of any built-in mike when there is any trace of a breeze - even without the included dead cat.

I very much enjoy this mic! I am very pleased with the audio I recorded using this mic so far! I like how easy it is to use right out of the box. The addition of a wind screen with purchase is much appreciated. I was very surprised by the range at which I was able to record. I was able to record a raven calling above some aspen trees! Very impressed! Thank you Audio Technica for such a solid product!
