Noisy, not good for video.

Feb 11, 2019

I bought this lens brand new with 2 years warranty for 250euros. Everywhere else I looked it costed at least triple the money, my guess is that they were trying to get rid of a-mount lenses such as this one. To the lens now. The lens is mainly made out of metal and plastic parts, the mount is full metal as well. You can clearly feel the difference in quality to the 18-55 SAMII. One huge downside is the noise of the auto-focus, it literally sound... Show More

Wonderful Lens!

I use this mostly for photography indoors. It creates a great wide angle scene with minimal distortion.

Great lens, with amazing color and DOF!!

Dec 4, 2011

I bought this lens to use with my Sony NEX-FS100, and it delivered great DOF and color. This lens has a great angle of view with no noticeable distortion. I highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs to get close to their subjects.

Using with sony nex vg 10

Oct 10, 2011

It's necessary to shoot at my music studio, which is has a limited area. When attached to Sony Nex VG 10, it has limitations in low ligth compared to original lens (18mm-200mm). Anyway, it still works to my necessities. Remember: there is no autofocus with this lens attached to sony nex vg 10, so it'll take some time to be sure that focus is ok, considering the small lcd preview.

My big

Jul 25, 2011

I bought this to go with my Sony A55 camera as the lens it came with, though sharp, had a fairly narrow field of view. Mainly I stitch my photos into long panoramics, and so hoped to have more surface area to stitch with the 11-18mm lens, which has proven to be the case. Occasionally I wanted to photo something wide for just one shot, as I sell large prints and canvas (24x40)and so far this has been good, though I've yet to test its ultimate clarity. Perspective distortion at the edge of the field of view has been easily corrected with Photoshop skew. Nice lens!

great photos but be careful with it!

I like this lens for being compact and giving good results, but i managed to break the internals just putting it in and out of my bag, I have since totally stripped it down, and found the whole assembly relies on three tiny flanges, around 1mm deep by 4mm long, that has all sheared off. Some of the internals are metal, some plastic, but these, that should have been metal, failed because they are plastic. the lettering is also wearing off the outside of the lens. So - sorry Sony, but for $ i want better build quality.

should have bought that one earlier

The only thing I regret not having bought it before my trip to the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and other Canyons :-) The wide angle is fantastic, a lot of fun to create great pictures with.

Glad I bought this lens!

Have used the lens for several weeks now and have not found any flaws yet. Sharp images, little bit of distortion on 11mm which is common. Mainly use it in daylight, outdoors.

A great investment!

This is perfect for group photos when you don't want to purposely exclude anyone. Also for the interior of buildings and for those horizon shots. A must for your collection. Clear as a bell.

Excellent for close quarters photography

Dec 2, 2008

I used this lens on my Konica-Minolta 5D during a photo workshop with Arizona Highways magazine to the Antelope Slot Canyons near Page Arizona. Since shooting inside dark slot canyons sometimes only as wide as your shoulders made it difficult for photography. But the SAL-1118 performed amazingly giving me wide extremely sharp fully defined depth of field photographs. I can't say enough good words about this lens.

AWESOME!

Use- amateur photographer, in Philly and country This lens is extraordinary good in all uses. The picture quality is excellent and focus extremely close ( closer than the 10 inches reported) Recommend this for anybody who dose landscapes or lives in a city and want to take architectural pictures. Distortion is minimal when a distance from the subject. The manual focus fills like you are breaking it when you use it (like all Sony lenses I guess). Cant what until I get the Sony or Tamron 18-250 . (that would be all the ultimate two lens pack!)

Great Addition

Apr 21, 2008

I bought this lens as part of my travel kit. along with two other zoom lens, it allows me to cover the range of 11 - 300 mm, the equivalent of 16 - 450 mm for a 35 mm SLR. The lens itself is light, has good image contrast and sharpness and little visible distortion. It's excellent for landscapes, interiors, large groups of people and for close up candids. The only drawback is the relatively slow 4.5 - 5.6 maximum aperture, though with the A700 DSLR body, this isn't much of a handicap, since the camera ISO range is up to 6400. All-in-all, a lot of lens for the money.

Excellent wide angle zoom.

Dec 10, 2007

I bought this lens at B&H a couple months back for aphoto shoot, and it's a really sharp wide angle for theprice. Distortion is well controlled and it's an excellentlens for shooting landscapes and architecture, and also isgreat for wide angle portraits. The detail is surprisinglygreat for the price. A Wide-angle super zoom!

Jan 18, 2007

I bought this lens a month ago. I thought it was a little expensive and that 4.5-5.6 was not so good, but together with super steady shot in the a100 it gives great pictures! Indoors and even without flash and in poor light! Sharp and with little distorsion. The construction could have been a little less plastic, but with it's excellent performance, it really doesn't matter. With a more solid outer, I'd giving it 5 stars overall. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: 20mm, 24mm Items I Recommend: UV-filter + Sony a100 camera
