Don't Overlook for Weddings and Events (From a Canon User)

Jun 3, 2017

I'm a professional photographer who has used Canon my whole career. I had been eyeing Sony for awhile due to my intrigue on their technology, and the fact that a few of my friends and colleagues had started shooting with their products, and raved about them. Up until the a9 though, Sony just didn't offer the complete package of what I needed. This review is biased to me and my needs, but hopefully you can find it helpful anyway. BTW, this is my f... The Sony A9 is just AWESOME

Dec 26, 2017

The Sony A9 is one of the best cameras I've ever owned...period. In 30 years of photography I've never seen a camera react so quickly and accurately to everything I've tried with it so far. The focusing system is astounding, fast, deliberate, and perfect every time. Subject tracking is excellent, facial recognition is slightly better than the previous A7S/R II's, and the light meter is extremely accurate. Eye focus is good, though it does strugg... Show More

Overheating is real, so is the awesome video quality

Jun 9, 2017

This review is for the A9 video capabilities. Last year I shot a 2-part special for national broadcast on the A7sII's. We needed a cheap solution for a remote shoot in bad weather and low light. They performed well, so well, that I bought the A9 as soon as it came out. I just returned from a 4 day shoot in Cuba and i must say, the video is outstanding for the price. The lack of picture profiles and customization didn't bother me on the project. T... Show More

Wow! Exceeded my expectations.

Dec 31, 2019

Subject tracking including continuous real-time eye detection are CRAZY good. And totally silent shooting is a bigger benefit than I anticipated. 20 frames/sec with full auto focus is great for sports, but the subject tracking and silent shooting are useful for many types of photography. Shooting indoor events is so much more fun when I don't need to worry about the sound of a mechanical shutter or the strobe of a flash. Most of my photos are of... Show More

A9 is really great but with exceptions

I am a Pro and have 5 Canon bodies and 29 Canon lenses from 8-800 mm and 6 Sony a series bodies and 12 Sony lenses. I shoot everything from extreme macro, wildlife, sports, weddings, video, landscapes, commercial, architecture and portraiture. All of the good points from all other reviews are correct, the camera is a joy to use. In a week I have shot fast running dog portraits, slow mo of fire scenes, a concert at a famous Juke Joint, sailboat ra... Show More

Absolutely Excellent

May 31, 2017

I have been in Sony for a while and I currently own an a7Rii and now the a9. I shoot portraits, landscape, wildlife, and occasional sports. I have loved the a7Rii and I will certainly keep it for landscape and as a second body, but this a9 is perfect for all other situations. Several highlights of my experience: The ergonomics are excellent. I love the joystick, and I set the center press to change focus modes and/or the focus point size. It work... Show More

Extraordinary Camera Body

Jun 8, 2017

For a couple of years now I've been shooting with a Leica Q. I love my Q, compact, simple, excellent and distinctive photographs with the fixed 28mm lens. I shot for 3 weeks in Japan this spring with only the Q and made many good photographs. But, there were times when I wished I'd had more control over my composition than that offered by walking closer or farther from my subject. I have the new Canon 24-70 2.8L II lens. This is a beautiful, fast... Show More

The Perfect Camera?

Jun 8, 2017

I have been using the Sony A7sii and Sony A7rii and they have been great cameras but felt they were lacking something. I wanted a camera that melded features of both. The A9 is that camera that I have been wanting. I work as a set photographer in the Film and Television industry and this camera is the perfect tool for my work. Here are some of the reasons it is a great set camera and can be great for other purposes. 1. 24MP. I felt the A7sii was ... Show More

Five Steps Forward, Two Steps Back

I sure wanted to love this camera... I've been on the Sony train since the NEX-5 in 2010. I've enjoyed the journey and in the process I've funded Sony's R&D. Each step has been great leading up to the a7rii which is so stellar. But it's focus capability, particularly in low light and very variable face and eye detection are always a frustration. But when it hits, the results are so great. So enter the a9. Was this the answer to my dreams- killer ... Show More

Sony A9 ushers in a new era in photography!

Jun 9, 2017

In 2-3 years, no one will be talking about mirrorless cameras. There will be only mirrorless. The Sony A9 just drove the final nail into the DSLR coffin. With all my previous pro DSLRs - Nikon D3S, D4, Canon 1DX II - it took me a few sessions to learn and use the autofocusing well. Not so with the A9. From the first AF-C shot, pretty much everything worked perfectly right out of the gate. The autofocusing tracking is simply the best I have seen, ... Show More

Great sports camera

May 28, 2019

Okay so, my reference point is that I used to own an A7III which already has an incredible AF system. Upgraded because I wanted the electronic shutter of the A9. With firmware 5.0 on the A9, the difference is that while the A7III can keep up with subjects (even running longjumpers coming straight at the camera) the A9 allows you to be specific, which is essential to successfully photographing team sports. The reason for this is the new focus... Show More

A Perfect Balance of Form and Function

Aug 11, 2017

The ergonomics, image quality, and functionality of this camera are unparalleled. Naturally, different cameras work best for different applications, so there is no single best camera body. However, the a9 has incredible still and video capabilities, whether you shoot landscapes, portraits, sports, or nature. Paired with the GM series lenses, it's a phenomenal system. I shoot in low-light conditions, often from a distance, at classical music perfo... Show More

The A9 is a DSLR-Killer

Oct 15, 2017

I bought the Sony A9 to replace a seldom used A7ii, and as a companion to a much used A7Rii. After two weeks, the A7Rii may be the spare, despite its many fine qualities. The A9 is easy to use, and nothing gets in your way. The high shooting speed and quick AF are everything Sony promised. It is also nice to discover bonbons in its operation not otherwise promoted. It is ready to shoot after about a second from a cold start, even quicker to wake ... Show More

I am a longtime professional shooter having used Canon for the last dozen years or so (along with several others) and became entertained with the Sony system (A7s). Sony's home run"

I have been a long-time professional Canon owner and bought the A7R2 as a replacement for one of my Canon 5Ds. I was so blown away by the A7R2 that I finally decided to switch entirely to Sony with the new A9 replacing my 1DSMk2. The A9 is an amazing camera on many levels but its most appealing feature for me as an action shooter is the ability to see a continuous image in the viewfinder while doing action pans. Best Overall Camera

Jul 17, 2017

I purchased an a9 to replace an a7RII and I am glad I did! While you don't get the insanely sharp 42 MP resolution that the a7RII provides, the a9 image quality is still very good and high ISO performance is excellent. The best part however is the focusing system. The a9 locks in really fast even in dark situations where my a7RII would struggle. I am not much of a sports or action shooter so I don't even use the 20 FPS burst mode but single shot ... Show More

Im really happy with this purchase. I was considering the a7iii but glad I went with the a9. The AF is really great! Dont be mistaken though, this wont make up for bad technique. Youll still need to apply proper photographic knowledge to get the most out of it. I really enjoy the controls though its different enough from my a7riii that I still need to operate each just slightly different. The Godox flash is fantastic too. I had one already so its... There are many good points for this camera. However in the end I returned it. I was not moved enough with the IQ as to what I have now. Nor was I overly impressed with the Sony 24-70G master zoom. I want native lenses, I do not need AF being off because of a 3rd party lens, or adapters with tolerances that can be off. That's part of the reason you want a mirrorless to avoid intolerances. Now I do think the D5 focus' quicker and more precise, mayb... Show More

The higher quality YouTube reviews of this camera are spot on. I really liked my A7Rii, but had my eyes on the new A7iii.
