Great for birding

Jul 24, 2019

Outstanding in every way! It is easy to hand hold with my OM-D E-M1 Mkii, and the results are very satisfying. Attached are two hand held shots that were cropped down a bit, but still retaining high resolution.

About the same size as my vintage Zuiko 300mm f4.5

Jan 2, 2019

This is an exceptional lens! Ive been missing a fully functional Zuiko 300mm since I retired my OM-1, 2 and 4. Yet the optical quality of this lens is every bit as good (if not better) than my vintage Zuiko 300mm f4.5. Simply delighted. Caution however: I read on some reviews that the hood sometimes sticks in the outward position. I believe this is user unfamiliarity... with the lens pointing away from you and you extend the hood and rotate it to the right it will lock in the outward position (as designed). Simply rotate hood to the left and slide back. Dont panic and dont try brute force.

Great lens for birding, very portable.

I have never had to use my tripod with this lens because the image stabilization works so well. Photos are tack sharp. I routinely hike into forested areas in search of eagles. Great to travel light under these conditions. Love this lens!

Fabulous lens

Sep 13, 2018

Love the lens. It is tack sharp and I love that I can adjust the distance from my subject to the lens on the lens itself. It is a bit heavy and I recommend using a tripod although I've taken many of small animals and they have been quite sharp but I have to increase my shutter speed to prevent blur. The stabilization is great but because it is a fairly large lens and a little difficult to handle when you have small hands I did get sone photos with blur from movement.

Best light-weight birding lens

Aug 28, 2018

I've used this lens for a few years on OMD EM1 mark ii. I've always had the MC-14 teleconverter on it and have always been pleased or amazed with the IQ. It's not as good for BIF as my D500 with 500 f/4 but it's not that far behind. Anytime I know I'll be walking/hiking or just plain lazy this is what I grab.

Olympus Service Policy Reduces the Value of This Lens

Jun 17, 2018

I bought this lens in mid-April and have treated it with loving care as I do all of my lenses. No drops, not dirt, no sand, and no water have made contact with this lens. About one and one-half months ago, the set screw which is attached to the red alignment dot near the rear of the lens fell out and the rear cover of the lens suddenly fell off while I was changing lenses. Until that moment I was loving the experience of using this lens. Shortly ... Show More

Brilliant!

Jun 5, 2018

I am extremely impressed with the razor sharp images not to mention the relatively light weight and easy handling of a lens with a 600mm (35 mm format) equivalent field of view. Being able to obtain hand held images, if need be, with such a lens is incredible in my opinion. Images with the Olympus MC-14 teleconverter, while not as sharp as those w/o, render very fine images with 840mm equivalent FOV. While by no means inexpensive, this lens is a ... Show More

Outstanding sharpness and out of focus backgrounds

May 6, 2018

I took this lens on a Zoo Safari shooting all hand held at f/4. I discovered that the depth of field was so shallow that it was difficult to hit critical focus. I also thought the bokeh was too busy in many photos - I prefer a more smooth creamy bokeh. With some practice and good composition I have been blown away with the pictures this lens can capture. I posted over 100 pictures from this zoo safari on flickr if you want to examine more pictures:https://www.flickr.com/photos/millsjpg/albums/72157694727998301

This Lens Continues To Exceed My Expectations

May 4, 2018

After using this lens for several thousand exposures over the last month, mainly of birds-in-flight and attached to my Olympus E-M1 Mark II, I continue to be delighted by how fast and accurate the lens acquires focus. Additionally, and most importantly, the lens is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever owned in my 49 years of photography. Its size and weight also lend it to be used hand-held, if your technique is good. I find the lens very sharp w... Show More

Just one more guy in love with this lens!

Apr 30, 2018

It's hard to bring new info to the table regarding this lens. My main purpose is shooting butterflies and birds, and for this, the 300mm and EM1-ii is an ideal match. You can fill the frame from several meters away and not spook the subjects. I'm not sure what other people expect with regard to weight, but I've toted this lens for hours on the camera and I'm not bothered by it. Since I mostly do hand-held shots using the amazing IS, I removed the... Show More

Great lens

Dec 27, 2017

Ive been shooting full frame Canon equipment and L series lenses for years and I think theyre great. Having said that, Im not getting any younger and I made the hard decision to downsize to an Olympus E-M1 Mark II. One of the lenses I purchased is the ED 300 f4 and Im absolutely delighted. Its not super small but its WAY smaller than my Canon 500 f4 L series. It focuses very fast and it is tack sharp. Keep in mind that on your micro 4/3 body this is the focal length equivalent of a 600 f4. Do yourself a favor and just bite the bullet and buy it (and the matching1.4x Olympus converter).

On the fence...

Jun 17, 2017

Ever since Olympus came out with this lens, I have been on the fence regarding if I actually needed it since I already had the 75-300mm. I had a Nikon 300 f.4 from my film days and never really loved the lens. So, I stayed on the fence and continued using the zoom, and continued to not be really happy with my wildlife or bird photography which was acceptable but not completely up to my standards. Once I had the opportunity to use the Oly 300 f.4,... Show More

No complain. This is a great lens you should buy if you love to take shots of birds. The lens is quality built and the pictures taken with this lens are excellent. The only con is that it is a bit heavy. But comparing similar lenses of Nikon or Canon, the weight is totally acceptable.

An Amazing Lens

Feb 15, 2017

This is an incredible lens! It's the equivalent of a 600mm in 35mm format at half the price and weight of a Nikon or Canon 600mm. Over the years I've gotten used to mounting my longer Nikon lenses on a monopod or tripod so I still use those occasionally with this lens, but because of the 5 axis image stabilization and decreased weight, I find it easy to handhold in most situations. An added plus is that this lens can be used with the Olympus 1.4X... Show More

Offers Creative Possibilities, But Not a Must Buy

Jan 6, 2017

I am not a technical gear person, so I don't shoot pennies to test sharpness and other aspects of a lens' capabilities. I bought this lens because I wanted the effective 600mm focal length in my kit, but I am not a birder. I used the lens for the first time for about a four-hour walking photography excursion along the lake in Chicago. The lens had some trouble focusing--it hunted--but the sunlight was very bright and the landscape in the distance... Show More

Outstanding, worth the wait.

Oct 15, 2016

I do a lot of nature photography and my 70 - 300 4/3 lens actually had decent resolution but was always hunting for its focus and was too slow in lower light. The 300 PRO solves that issue and takes it to the next level by providing a user selectable focus range that I find to be very intuitive. The IS has allowed me to get very acceptable hand-held images at 1/25 second shutter speeds even when using the 1.4 PRO teleconverter. Sharp fast and worth the dollars. The weatherproof construction knocks it out of the park.

Great Lens

Sep 28, 2016

I carry this lens on the OMD EM1 with a Black Rapid Kick strap and safety clip attached walking about birding. I leave the lens collar attached to slip my hand through to make holding easier. I have put painter's tape over the IS switch to prevent turning it off. I can shoot hand held 1/60 second if the subject stays still. Birds and wildlife fill the frame. I've enjoyed this lens since January 2016 (had it on preorder with B&H).
