Very nice standard prime lens
Sharp on the center. Although visible CA appears on a repeated basis, nothing lightroom cant fix. The size is compact and the build quality is exceptional. The facade of the lens is gorgeous. Favorite standard prime lens for me.

Amazing normal lens
This is my everyday lens on my Sony A7R II and it works well as a normal perspective lens. I find I don't miss having an f1.4 maximum aperture. The images are amazingly sharp where focused and have a beautiful bokeh in the unfocused areas. Since my other cameras have micro 4/3s sensors and lenses with half the focal length, I'm having to adjust my thinking to the narrower depth of field of the longer, full frame lenses. As to the price, good glass has always been expensive, and this is definitely good glass. This is a lens I look forward to using.

Equal to a medium format lens
I've been shooting with this lens on an A7R II for a month now (just converted from Nikon.) The images are at the level in every respect to a medium format lens with this lens/camera combination. Stunning resolution and micro-contrast, fantastic colors, fantastic pop and contrast with only default processing of uncompressed RAW files in Capture One 10. Amazing.

Best in class
I have compared the lens with many others at the same focal length and it always stands out as the best by far. Perfect optics, no distorsion, very light. It is a joy to use

Love it
As always, the Sony Zeiss lenses live up to their reputation. Great for portraits and street photography alike.

Top notch piece of glass
This lens does not disappoint. Shallow depth of field is amazing and details are more than adequate. Great overall lens.

Just not a real lens
If you are goignto roll auto focus all the time, maybe this is nice for you. Me, i'm a video guy, and when i take photos, i roll in full manual. SO this lens is impossible to use. The electronic focus ring doesn't make sense to me as it doesn't have gears. It is touch sensitive, essentially; the faster you move it the farther it goes. anyway, i hate this thing ...respectfully :)

An amazing Sharp Lens...
I heard so many good things about this lens and everything they say was true. Great lens for portraits. The images are sharper than real life. I also use it for video head closeups and it works amazing. The only thing I didn't like is that I had to return it once because it arrived broken making a weird sound when I tried to focus and it wasn't focusing right on auto. My main suspect is that for some reason everything that I have bought from Sony... Show More

Incredible performance in a small package
I purchased this lens from B&H in February 2016 and have never looked back. It's frequently used in my portrait and event projects and consistently renders amazing results that clients love. DXOMARK shares my assessment, giving it the excellent score of 48, three more points than the more recently released FE 50mm f/1.4. Subject isolation and resolution are superb with the FE 55 at f/1.8 wide open with that signature Zeiss color contrast. The aut... Show More

Essential Lens for full or aps-c bodies
I've been using this on my a6500 as a portrait lens and I can't recommend it enough. Solid construction, tack sharp, great bokeh and imo, a great bargain.

Sharp and And well built
I do not pretend to understand lenses on a technical level. I look for quality, reliability, sharpness and weight. All this data exists in this lens, it is super sharp, well built, fast and easy focus.

Ridiculously good lens!
Everything about the performance of this lens is disgustingly good. Sure you do pay for it considering most 50ish FL are 1/4 of the price. But if you want a stunning performer in this focal range, you will not be disappointed. The rendering of images is beautiful especially with portraits. There is this unquantifiable quality to the photos it delivers.

Everything they say it is
I shoot a Sony A6500 coming from a Sony A6300. I've owned many lenses in the past and this Sony 55 1.8 is by far the best of the best. I also have the Sigma 18-35 which is an awesome lens along with the Sony 18-105. I've owned the Sigma 19, 30 and 60 Art lenses and they are great lenses but do not compare with this lens as far as sharpness and color goes. The Sigma's are excellent but the Sony / Zeiss 55 1.8 beats them all. The photos off this le... Show More

The best reasonably sized normal lens ever?
Of the nearly 20 normal lenses from many makers I've owned, I have to say this is the best all rounder, ever. Great at all apertures, accurate autofocus, small and light. Faster 50s may suck in more light but unless you really want that nostalgic glow, smeared corners and heavy vignette, none can touch this lens wide open. I am astonished.

Couldn't be happier
I was deciding between this and the 50mm 1.4. After looking at both, I decided to go with the slightly cheaper option. I'm thrilled with the choice. I'm sure the the 1.4 would be great on occasion but for 400 less and a significant size reduction this is a crisp, lightweight prime. Excellent.

Love it! Super sharp!
At first it seems like the price is a bit too high for 55mm 1.8 but this lens is amazing and worth it. Well built, super sharp, best lens I've owned so far. Have been getting amazing results with this lens. Love it.

The best in its class for the A7R II
If you are an art photographer and looking for the fineness quality, this is the lens to build your set of lens around. Quality is great, AF is excellent, balance on the A 7R II is great. It just feels right. Add the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm F/1.4 Za Lens, the 85mm, 25mm, 18mm Batis lenses from Zeiss and you'll be one happy camper!

I bought this lens to fill in my primes for landscape and I very happy with it. It is small, light weight and sharp as a tack.
