Great lens all-around!

Sep 27, 2019

I purchased this for my upcoming trip abroad, as I wanted to be able to bring only one lens with me. I'm using it with a Hasselblad Lunar (images attached). For a mirrorless system, it is somewhat large, but if you're accustomed to carrying big DSLRs (like myself), I don't think it's a problem. The pictures that come out are crisp, and because of the versatility, I've been able to capture a range of subjects. I do wish the f-stop was lower, but t... Show More

why it is a great lens

Oct 20, 2013

based on video applications with sony Nex fs 700. the lens is great because in reality you don't have no other choice...unless you want to go fully manual in shooting video...which is a bit of headaches for sports etc... Beware that adding the sony LA EA2 and a superb lens like the carl zeiss 24/70 f2,8 on a nex Fs 700 will give you no aperture control.the default aperture will be set at F 3,5. unless you think to get stuck at F3,5 on vido is gre... Good image quality, great handling.

Oct 25, 2010

Since this is the only E System lens offering this range of focal lengths, which is probably a necessity for any professional photographer using Sony's NEX cameras, it's a good thing Sony made this lens this good. Image quality is no better or worse than one would expect from lenses in this price range regardless of make or system. While it might feel initially a bit weird pairing what is necessarily a rather large lens (Sony made it no larger th... Show More

Excellent Travel Lens

Feb 28, 2011

I purchased this lens specifically for travel and for that purpose, it excels. It looks big on my NEX-5, but I got used to it quickly. It's comfortable to hold and feels very solid. Stabilization works well and focus is quick enough (for me) in good light. In dim light, autofocus slows down somewhat and sometimes hunts in the telephoto range. The lens is relatively heavy, but still makes for a significantly lighter and more comfortable combo than... Show More

good looking and accurate lens

Nov 29, 2010

I love the idea of a small camera that is both accurate and light. I am only 5 ft. tall and petite so carrying my Nikon D90 to soccer games for my grandchildren was a chore and a strain. My pictures so far have been excellent but I have not used it alot as soccer has ended and I'm not sure how it will be on moving subjects without a viewfinder. Having said that, the camera and lens is pretty sharp and clear and manageable. I really need to read t... Show More

This is the second SEL18200 that I've owned -- I rather foolishly sold my first one a couple of years ago, but I sure missed it, and thus I bought this new one. Extended-range lenses like this are always some kind of compromise, but the compromises in this lens are in how it is bigger and heavier and more expensive than most others -- and thus, the compromises are not in the optics or the image stabilization or the price, so you get what you pay ... Only lens you'll need?

Apr 18, 2011

I haven't had the lens for long, but from my experience so far this lens is wonderful. The images are sharp, the focusing is quick, what more could one want? The range, 18mm-200mm, covers almost everything you will need. It would be nice if the lens were faster, but that would mean the lens would have to be much heavier. Note that this lens is *not* particularly heavy or bulky for one with this range. Construction is superb, there is no lens cree... Show More

love it

Aug 21, 2012

i have this mounted on an nex 5n and it has been a blast. this is the first lens i have ever bought, so i have nothing to compare it to, but the quality seems great when you hold it solid doest feel cheap at all. i did a lot of comparing this lens to the tamron 18-200 and i fell like this was a good buy i have not had any problems with the lens falling in or out like a lot of people complained about i tested it a few times to to get it to do it on its own and it as not, maybe sony has fixed that problem. this lens has opened up a new world of photographing for me and recommend it to anybody.

I would buy again.

Mar 14, 2017

The only drawback to this lens is that I received it the day before I left for the vacation for which I purchased the lens. I feel if you purchase it, you should have an hour or so....or maybe more....to play around with it to make sure you know it! Same with any photographic equipment. I did get to know it pretty fast and it is a great lens! Works better with a tripod, obviously any telephoto type lens would. However, shooting from a skiff, it still did great. On some of the photos, I took two shots as insurance and that worked til I got totally comfortable with the lens. Would recommend.

Excellent lens that meets my needs

Feb 2, 2018

While on a brief visit to India, I fought back against the limitations of the two kit lenses for my a6000. I realized that I needed a lens with a very wide range. I needed to transition from wide angle for scenes to get close to a figure nearby. Changing lenses in the field posed too much risk of sand and dust. At home I also do sports photography and need to cover distance but also the player coming in close. This lens is meeting all of these needs. The small size and relatively light weight also function well with the a6000 body. I may find some limits down the road but none so far.

Great Lens. Great on quality and size.

Jul 16, 2014

I want this lens to travel. The image quality and versatility are the strongest pros. The zoom and focus zoom are smooth. Much better than some Canon lenses i've tried. But the lens have a design issue to use with Nex 6, 5 or 6 cameras: The diamenter of 67mm is too high and cover the AF assistance lamp. Ok, in outdoor conditions, this won't be necessary, but is a issue that you have to know. Keep you kit lens to use the camera flash and AF assistance lamp in indoors situations. And she is a little heavier than I expected. But its ok. Nice piece of glass.Great finish material.

Tack sharp, deep colors, light weight.

I own a Canon 5D, with many canon lens and by comparison, the new Sony 18-200mm attached to a new Sony NEX5n, performed extremely well last weekend when I was shooting video in poor light at a Church concert. The lens is so light that I was able to hold the camera and lens at shoulder height without difficulty, for an hour of video shooting. The lens image stabilizer worked well in poor light right up to full zoom at 200mm as did the autofocus. My only concern with this excellent lens is that I expect that it is relatively fragile if dropped or struck at a bad angle.

balanced power

I have used this lens to shoot a gymnastics meet in a poorly lit gym, and for doing nothing other than using default settings, the results were good. I think it'l be even better when i use the sports setting, or in better light. i like the weight and the solid feel of the lens. it absolutely dwarfs the camers, but it assures me that i'm getting as much light as possible to the sensor. the zoom action is smooth and easy. the only drawback to me, is the price. i do feel i got a great lens for the price, but it'd be nice to have a few other options.

All-in-One for NEX

Jan 27, 2011

The NEX 5 with SEL 18200 lens (and maybe the pancake) is the perfect travel kit for those wanting to pack light. I had been using Canon's EFS 18-200 on my 7D but feel it is too cumbersome for many of the trips I take. The Canon-NEX adapter didn't allow the EFS 18-200 to work on the NEX body with AF and IS, so I ordered the SEL 18200. The range of the SEL18200 is fantastic and it definitely has an L Series quality build. I love position and ease-of-use of the lock....which dosen't really seem necessary yet as there is no lens creep to speak of.

Heavy but Excellent All-in-One.

Oct 20, 2014

I am a retired pro, and moved to Sony e-mount system to reduce weight and space needs. Although this lens is fairly heavy, it's a great one lens fits all for travel, and very sharp, even at 200 mm. I was worried about speed of auto-focusing, as I have been frustrated by the Sony 55-210 kit lens. I tested the lens at a soccer game, shooting at f6.3 using the a6000's 11 fps motor drive, and marveled at the speed and sharpness of the auto focus. I was also happy to find that auto focus work well on the Nex 7's contrast detection only AF system.

Good lens but expensive!

Jun 16, 2011

This lens helps the Nex-5 to take good still or video close-up shots of birds without being as heavy or bulky as a 300 mm lens plus SLR camera. Only problem; the Nex-5 has no eyepiece and therefore manual focus can only be done on the screen, and this can be difficult in bright light on the screen or in poor lighting conditions. I would hope Sony could come out with an electronic eyepiece that would reproduce the screen and allow focusing. That's really all that is missing from this camera, but it's a big problem!

Nice All Round Lens

Mar 29, 2011

I added this lens for my day hikes. I was using a wide angle and missed several wildlife photo opportunities. I do not want to change a lens in the dusty environment on the trails. I held back on purchasing this lens for months because of the slow f6.3 at 200mm. My prior super zoom experience was not great, but that was on my Canon 10D. The NEX 5 performs much better at higher ISO and the Sony 18-200 with OSS is working much better for me than my old super zoom combo. I give this 4 stars only because of the f6.3

Excellent performer

Dec 4, 2012

One great all around lens, well built and solid. Had purchased the LE version first and did not like it. It was soft at 200, not usable for even casual photography. Not sure if it was a bad copy but there was a difference in performance both optically and focusing in very low light. For just two ounces more and a bit fatter, don't seems make a difference. If you want the LE might as well save money and buy the Tamron. They seem to be one and the same? Can recommend this lens with no reservations.

Great optically but huge

Apr 7, 2011

Quite sharp for the 18-200 range and beautifully made. But it's huge and heavy and makes me think of why I got the NEX5 in the first place... The effective size of the NEX5/18-200 makes me want to grab my A55 mated with the 18-250 instead, where the overall ergonomics feel better... So while its an excellent lens on its own right, I will probably not use it as much as the 18-50 mm ... Then go with my A55 when I have something more serious to do. Maybe I'll change my mind if I get the NEX-VG10!

Disappointment

Jul 16, 2011

Pros: Great zoom range.Neg: Heavy. Unbalances the camera big time. What is the point of buying such a compact and neat camera if it is going to be used with such a large beast! More than half of the indoor pictures that I tried taking were worthless due to the lens not being able to focus properly. Constantly hunts for focus indoors. The zoom ring is very hard to move. No smooth zooming at all! Overall, this lens was a big disappointment and was returned .... Five stars to B&H!!

Killer Lens

Oct 6, 2010

This lens is capable of pro quality performance, and the auto focus is superb, and very useful for someone with old eyes. Yes, in appearance it overpowers the Nex-5, like a lens with a camera attached. But that's the point, isn't it? A small, high quality camera easy to carry, discreet to use and capable of high quality images? Indoor snaps for advertising use are excellent. Portraits are super. I love this lens and have not taken it off the camera since the day I put it on.

Jul 15, 2011

This lens is really great. The quality of photo is very good and video is excellent. Only thing I don't like above sony is they keep important information in fine print. When using NEX-5 camera with 18-200 lens the photo has shadow in bottom and to avoid this it need flash extender. Hovever, I am thinking ro buy new flash which will avialble in August instead of extender. I would stronly recommend to buy this lens.

Apr 8, 2013

Just because there aren't any other lens comparable to it, it's a good acquisition, but it's absurdly heavy and slow!Sony is too wealthy and has an unbelievable amount of technology to place in the market a lens with these kind of flaws!I've checked the new release with a huge motor under it, to make the focus less noisy, and it cost US more$ ! Ridiculous! At this size, it should be faster with a better focus!
